Narrative: Penny Ross/Phone Call: Penny R/Cris M
Who: Penny Ross (followed by a phone call to Cris M)
What: Narrative/Phone Call
When: The Day After This
Where: Penny's house!
Waking up early after a night like she had was not wise, but she couldn't help it. She had been awakened with a pounding head and a sour stomach, which reminded her that she hadn't gone to bed nearly hydrated enough and she was going to be paying for it the rest of the day. Especially since agreeing to watch Joy. But still she got up, she showered, she tried to make herself up, all clean clothes and some lipstick. She brushed her hair, and looked like she was ready for the day by the time it was 7:30 in the morning. Almost like she was going to work like a normal person.
There was no gun or badge to reach for though. She wasn't even on at the clinic. Instead she just reached for her purse and truck keys. She had some time before she was supposed to pick up Joy but she figured an errand first wouldn't hurt.
It wasn't until later that afternoon, Joy asleep, and her lying down in her room trying to nap off a headache that she realized she had been real wrong about that whole errand first not hurting bit. But she hadn't exactly considered the nature of the damn errand either.
The connection had been terrible on the phone in the hotel. The conversation hadn't lasted long, and there hadn't been many words between them. And nothing real nice. Nothing real terrible, but it was clear no matter what story she'd told no matter how believable that Olivia had her mind made up. Which had been the point of not calling all along. And checking in now, this long, had just made things sting. She'd tried explaining, but she was sure she just sounded like a crazy person. She hadn't been able to hear Olivia's entire response but there was something in there about her sounding crazy or thinking Olivia was crazy. And no she was not drunk dialing her. She could not come up with stories that good if she was drunk. That almost got a laugh. Almost. She almost heard it.
She'd been honest, she'd been thinking about her, missing her, that hadn't gone over so hot. But Penny had just kept on talking anyway, through the static. And the "are you still there?" comments. Turned out Olivia was real pissed about the dog. Penny had assured her she'd had no control over that. That had gone over about as well as missing her had. Sensible Olivia.
Of course all good things must come to an end and that jolly phone call had been no exception, it had ended with Olivia suggesting Penny call from a landline next time if she wanted to talk. But that she didn't know what there was to talk about. But that wasn't a 'never call here again.' Was it?
She hadn't come home in the best of moods, but she'd stuffed it down real low and focused instead on advil, water, dry toast, company, and weird baby centered television shows.
And now it was quiet again, she hadn't seen Clem for a bit, she'd just put Joy in her crib for a sleep, Frannie was curled under the damn thing very interested in any and all movement near the child, and any noise said child happened to make. And Penny was lying on her bed trying to nap too. It wasn't working. She got up. Paced around. Folded some clothes. Thought she might put them away but changed her mind and wandered around looking for something to tinker with. She was banned from crushing candy after the previous evening's bender.
She was also getting a headache from walking around the house already so she sat down on the stairs and decided now was a good of time as any to check on Cris. Anything to take her mind off...Her mind.
