Derek bounced Daisy lightly in his arms and looked sympathetically back at her as big, fat tears rolled down her chubby little cheeks. "Please don't cry," he whispered, using his thumb to brush some of the tears away. "I don't know what I'm doing, you gotta be gentle with me, kiddo, okay?"
Hearing Lydia's voice pulled him out of the little bubble he'd put he and Daisy into and he looked back over at her. "Okay, thanks, that sounds good," he agreed. He'd have to ask Lydia to show him how to get to bookmarks later, before she left but after he calmed Daisy back down.
"I was eight when Cora was born," he replied. "Laura and I helped my mom out a lot with her." Derek shrugged. He hadn't really thought about it much. "And a couple of my cousins had babies, I used to watch them when I was in high school. Sometimes."
Derek tilted his head forward and pressed his forehead against Daisy's, kissing the tip of her nose. "Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do," he sang quietly, barely in tune, but she seemed to like the vibration that came from his chest and transferred to her little body when he did it. The baby stopped sobbing and sniffled, pausing as if trying to decide whether she wanted to cry more or whether she was going to settle. "I'm half-crazy...all for the love of you," he went on, pausing again and drawing his head back from hers. Daisy sniffed again and looked up at him with her eyes still filled with tears. "...I don't know the rest of the song, but you won't even know that it's wrong..." he sang on, keeping the melody but making up the lyrics on the fly.
