A Meme Full of Tropes

A Meme Full of Tropes

trope noun \ˈtrōp\
Definition of TROPE
1
a : a word or expression used in a figurative sense : figure of speech
b : a common or overused theme or device : cliché

This meme is a collection of random fanfic and roleplay tropes.

How to Play:
  1. Post with your character | fandom | and any preferences.
  2. Be sure to mention any scenarios you are interested or not interested in playing.
  3. Tag Others.
  4. Be awesome to each other.
  5. Have fun!

Use the RNG to help you pick or choose on your own!

PROMPTS
  1. ACCIDENTAL BABY ACQUISITION: One of the characters in your story, by means other than pregnancy or adoption, acquires a child. This could be because his or her parent was killed, or someone leaves the child on the doorstep, or any other plotline. The main idea is that the main characters have to band together to raise the child, even if it is only temporary.
  2. ALPHA/BETA/OMEGA: Alpha/Beta/Omega or Alpha/Omega (occasionally Alpha/Beta) is a kink trope where some or all people have defined biological roles based on a hierarchical system, with the terms originating from animal behaviour research. There may be werewolf, knotting, or other animalistic elements involved, or the characters may be otherwise purely human.
  3. ANIMAL TRANSFORMATION: Animal transformation is a fanfic trope in which one or more characters are transformed into an animal, or else an Alternate Universe story wherein the characters are cast as animals.
  4. BODYSWAP: Bodyswap is a plot device or story trope involving two (or more) characters switching their physical bodies by magical, scientific, mystical or unspecified means. The device is used in canon and fanfiction alike, and fanfic may expand upon canonical instances of bodyswap.
  5. CROSS DRESSING: Crossdressing refers to characters dressing as members of the "opposite" sex or gender. It is used comedically, as a plot device and as a kink, both sexualized and not, in fanworks and in canon.
  6. DE-AGING: De-Aging is a story trope where adult characters are turned back into children or younger adults. The transformation can be fully physical and mental. It can also be a physical transformation that leaves the adult mind in a younger body; or the opposite, where the mind is reverted to a child-like state, but the body remains as is.
  7. HANDCUFFED/BOUND TOGETHER: Bound Together is a bonding trope in which two characters are chained together, psychically or physically, either through magical or technological means. The usual result (in ship fic) of all this one-on-one "bonding" time is that the characters either fall in love or realize they were in love all along.
  8. HUDDLED FOR WARMTH: Huddling for warmth or blanket fic is a trope that is generally found in both het and slash pairing-oriented fanfiction, and occasionally in some gen Hurt/Comfort. It is mainly used in order to maneuver two characters into a First Time. The advantages of putting your OTP into a "huddling for warmth" scenario are legion. The two characters are trapped in one place with no distractions, alone, and so their attention is focused entirely on each other. The tone of the story can range from fluffy to angsty.
  9. MIND CONTROL: Mind control is a very popular trope in fanworks (and many canons). In slash or ship fic that uses the trope, one part of the pairing is usually under the mental control of the other -- or is unable to resist orders from anyone, such as in Ella Enchanted AUs or fusions or "obedience curse" fics -- and the other part of the pairing figures this out and either helps the mindcontrolled character resist the urge to obey or takes advantage of them.
  10. ROAD TRIP: The characters must go on a long-distance trip in close proximity. There are any number of reasons for this, including a quest, mechanical failure of their original transport, or one of the characters (e.g. Tony Stark) thinks it will be a "good idea" or "fun." This then results in shenanigans or sex or both.
  11. SEX POLLEN: Sex Pollen is a common fanfiction trope used to bring two characters together in a sexual encounter. It involves one or several characters becoming infected with a pollen of some alien or magical plant, or they might be influenced in some other way (magic, alien technology, mind control, etc.) that causes them to lose inhibitions and/or revs up libido, usually resulting in non-con sex, which may lead to dramatic guilt and misunderstandings, or a resolution of UST.
  12. TELEPATHY: A story in which one (or more) of the characters develops the ability to read thoughts. This ability could be limited to their love interest, or it could be more general. Mindmeld is a more specific form, in which both characters can read one another's thoughts. Depending on the needs of the story, it could require a physical link, and it could be temporary. It is named after the Vulcan Mind Meld in the Star Trek universe.
  13. SOUL BONDING: In fanfiction and sometimes canon, a soulbond is a mystic or psychic bond between (usually) two people, who feel drawn to become devoted friends, or (more often) lovers. The bond may be something that brings them together, or something that results from their being together. It is usually portrayed as unbreakable and irresistible, a force that unites two people in a unique way. A soulbond can persist after the death of one or both partners, and through numerous reincarnations. It can be very similar to soulmates, which are two (or more) people who are always meant to be together.
  14. WINGFIC: Wingfic is a fanfiction genre in which one or more human characters sprouts a pair of wings. Fanfic written for a fandom in which the character canonically has wings (e.g. Good Omens) is usually not considered wingfic. However, as a response to a surge of wingfic, a Good Omens writer came up with wingless fic, wherein canonically winged characters suddenly and inexplicably lose them. Wingfic can be whimsical, but it can also be much darker in tone.
  15. WILDCARD: Got another trope we missed that you want to try? Go for it!

It was supposed to be a quick stop. Five minutes at most. All Lydia was doing was picking up some sort of travel guide Derek had for Brazil that had information about a small town where Braeden tracked the Desert Wolf. Scott begged her to swing by since she was going to be near Derek's loft for a haircut and he and Stiles were stuck in classes. Being a half time student definitely had its pros and cons when she got stuck running errands for everyone else.

She froze as she approached the door, tilting her head to the side and really listening. It sounded like a baby crying, but that didn't make any sense. Was this some sort of banshee thing? If it was, what exactly did it mean? She usually heard non distinct voices or 'fuzz', not an infant. And as much as Lydia could do without infants in her own life, she wouldn't want to see any harm come to one.

Ugh, okay, she needed to get the stupid book for Scott and get out of here, so she forced herself to ignore the cries and head to Derek's door. When she got there, she was shocked to see a car seat parked in front of it with a crying infant. She had never seen things with her banshee abilities, so she was pretty sure this was really happening. Why was there a baby outside Derek Hale's door?

She pounded on the door, hoping he would come quickly. She was never doing a favor for Scott again.

Derek had been out and about most of the morning, running errands, running in general like he did every morning. So when he jogged back into the parking lot of the warehouse that also happened to house his loft and he saw an unfamiliar car, his relaxed demeanor immediately shifted. It wasn't until he actually slipped into the building that he was able to catch a scent and, even then, it was muddled like it wasn't the only one. He caught Lydia but the rest made no sense.

Derek bounded up the stairs to the second floor where the actual loft was located and he stopped suddenly at the sound so out of place that it was impossible go miss. ...that was a baby.

Warily, Derek proceeded up the rest of the stairs and found Lydia knocking on his front door and an infant in a car seat on the floor at her feet.

"...what are you doing?" he asked, eyebrows lifted with incredulity, assuming that she had brought the baby. "Whose baby is that?"

Lydia hadn't been expecting Derek to come up the stairs behind her and she whirled around, eyes wide as she fell into a defensive stance at the sound of footsteps until she realized it was him. God. Apparently Scott hadn't even made sure that Derek was home before sending her over to pick up the book.

"Scott asked me to come and pick up some book," she said, glancing down at the baby before looking at him again. "I have no idea whose baby it is. It was here when I got here."

And naturally, Lydia hadn't made any effort to pick up the baby or see if there was a note with it. It was left at Derek's door so she figured it was his problem, not hers.

Derek stared back at her with the same "what the fuck" expression on his face for a moment before the baby let out a particularly loud and high-pitched scream. At that point, he winced. "Great, how long have you been standing there just letting it scream?" he asked, annoyed. It wasn't obviously the baby's fault that he or she had been abandoned there. "For fuck's sake," he sighed, striding forward and brushing past Lydia, both scooping the car seat up by the handle and unlocking the loft's door, using one hand for each.

"No wonder, you're one of Scott's, of course you let it cry, because that's how his stupid pack works," Derek muttered, annoyed, under his breath as he pushed the door open and let himself inside, leaving Lydia in his wake. "Everything is only your problem if it's directly your problem." He sets the car seat down on the desk and looks down at the crying baby sympathetically. He or she is wet, he can smell that much. "Oh no, that doesn't feel good does it? I know, hey it's okay, shh, shh, shh," he hushed gently, looking back over his shoulder. "No bag? Just a baby?" he asked Lydia, frowning before looking back at the baby and belatedly noticing the envelope tucked into the seat off to the baby's left.

"Whatcha got here, huh?" he asked the baby rhetorically. "Go make yourself useful, Lydia, see if there's a bag out in the hall somewhere, will you?" he added as he started to open the envelope.

"I just got here," Lydia defended herself. "And I don't know what to do with babies." It wasn't really an excuse and she knew that. Had Derek not arrived just then, she would have done something. Or called Scott's mom. Nurses knew how to take care of babies, right?

She rolled her eyes at Derek's directive, but stepped out in the hall and saw a bag with pink and blue cartoon elephants sitting near where the car seat had been. "Here," she said, picking it up and carrying it over to the desk.

Apparently she wouldn't be getting that book anytime soon and she was really tempted to just bounce now, but that didn't seem fair somehow. Plus she was curious about who would leave a baby at Derek's door.

Babies were intuitive. If they were crying, you tried to find out why. Usually, first things first: check their diaper. Derek didn't think it was that hard and if Lydia couldn't figure it out, he wasn't sure she was as smart as she thought she was, after all.

Derek finished opening the envelope as Lydia headed out and he pulled out the note, reading it. He read it once, twice, three times before it sunk in and the color drained out of his face. It took him the three tries to actually figure out that it wasn't just some random abandonment; he knew the woman who'd signed the note. ...if she wasn't full of it, this baby was his and he was just finding out about it — her; Daisy, apparently — now. Once Lydia came back with the diaper bag, Derek put the note back down on the desk and started digging through the bag in search of supplies he needed, trying to clear his head and concentrate on the baby girl in the car seat.

"Oh, I know, baby girl," he empathized as he unfolded the baby blanket that was tucked around her and laid it out on the desk before lifting her out of the car seat and laying her down on it. "Just...I'll get the stupid book in a minute, all right?" he asked, sensing Lydia hovering.

Lydia wasn't hovering because of the book, it was more that she was astounded at seeing Derek Hale with a baby. Not even that, but Derek knowing how to take care of a baby. It wasn't something that seemed to jive with his personality and she was surprised. And kind of impressed.

"Take your time," she said, picking up the letter that he had set on the desk and reading it, her eyes getting wide. Derek Hale was a dad? Well, she supposed he had to be better than his uncle was, so that was at least something. What was he going to do with her? Apparently the mother, whoever she was, wasn't interested in raising her.

Wow. Lydia couldn't even imagine how stunned Derek was right now. "Her name is Daisy," she said, in case he had somehow missed that.

Derek felt sick. For once, he wished he'd been honest with a woman before sleeping with her, because if she thought that Daisy would "be better off with her father," then she didn't know him at all and that was Derek's fault. His life was not kid friendly. There was a reason why the universe hadn't introduced him to The One, yet, he was pretty sure and he was also pretty sure that it was specifically because babies were the next logical step and they were too vulnerable while his life was too terrifying.

All the same, he went through the motions of changing the baby's diaper, one hand on her stomach to keep her from rolling as he prepped the other steps, and when he finished, he rolled the used diaper up on itself and lifted the baby — his baby — into his arms, taking a deep, shaking breath when she looked back at him and smiled, her eyes glowing gold, as she grabbed his nose in her tiny hand. Well. That explained that. If there was one thing the woman had known about him, it was that he was a werewolf.

"Do you always read other people's mail or am I just really lucky?" Derek asked, jaw set. "And I know. Thank you. I read it."

"What are you going to do?" Lydia blurted out, ignoring his question. How could he expect her to not read it? After all, she was the one who found the baby - his baby - at his front door. Not that she had actually done much of anything about it, but still. She felt like she was entitled to know what was going on.

She couldn't resist reaching out with one finger to stroke the baby's cheek. She was pretty cute.

"I don't know, Lydia!" he snapped reflexively and Daisy let go of his nose to grab Lydia's finger, shaking it in her little fist with surprising strength. "I don't know. The book is on the third shelf over there, I think, okay? Maybe the fourth."

His head was a mess and he felt nauseous with nerves. What the hell was he supposed to do with a baby? Derek remembered when Cora was a baby, but this was not even in the same ball park. That was a pack effort. Now, he was alone.

Lydia noticed the strength in Daisy's fist when she grabbed her finger and frowned at him. "Is she..." she wasn't entirely sure how werewolf genetics worked. Did both parents have to be weres to pass it on, like with Malia? Or was any child of Derek's going to be a werewolf because he was? It wasn't something that had really come up before.

"Can I help?" she offered. Not that she knew what good she could be, but she really wasn't a selfish person and Derek seemed overwhelmed, for good reason.

When Lydia didn't immediately go get the stupid book she'd come for, Derek heaved a sigh. If he was going to freak out, he didn't want to do it in front of an eighteen-year-old girl, that was for sure. "Look at her eyes," Derek said, frowning slightly. "You tell me."

As if on cue, Daisy squealed with inexplicable excitement and tugged Lydia's hand closer, shoving the teenager's finger into her mouth and her eyes lit up again, bright, brilliant gold.

Truthfully, as far as Derek could tell, based on the family he used to have, it was a crap shoot whether or not a baby with only one werewolf for a parent would be born. Sometimes they were. Sometimes they weren't. Daisy, apparently was.

"You want to help," Derek replied, less than asked. She'd left the baby in the car seat and just stood there next to her, she hadn't even been bent to try to calm the infant with hushed words, let alone figure out what was actually wrong and she wanted to help?

The yellow eyes were a dead giveaway and Lydia was too surprised by them to stop the baby from shoving her finger in her mouth. At least she didn't have teeth yet. "She's cute," she said, giving Derek a shrug.

Plus, she was fascinated by the ease with which he was taking care of a baby. It was a whole new side of him that she had never seen before or guessed even existed. It was certainly more interesting than listening to Scott and Stiles bicker over the best way to go after the Desert Wolf.

"Yeah, she's cute," Derek agreed. She was also the sign that his life was about to change, maybe for the better and maybe for worse, and there wasn't a damn thing he could do about it, because her mother hadn't left any contact information and Derek had lost her number a year ago. He couldn't even remember what she looked like except he remembered she'd been a Latina.

He shifted Daisy in his arms so that he had a free hand to pinch the bridge of his nose. What the hell was he going to do? "Will you get my laptop, please?" he asked, finally. If he was going to raise a baby, he sure as hell wasn't doing it in Beacon Hills. "It's in the bag, just...see it?" he asked, gesturing vaguely toward the floor next to the book shelf. More accurately, it was Peter's laptop, but...that was neither here nor there. Time to start house hunting. He couldn't raise a baby in a loft, even if he did stay in Beacon Hills. Everyone knew where Derek Hale lived. There was no solitude, no privacy, and when a new threat came to town, the loft was like a goddamned magnet. It wouldn't be safe for Daisy here.

Lydia couldn't imagine why he wanted his laptop of all things at this particular moment, but she had offered to help, so she went over to the bag he gestured at and got the computer out, bringing it back to the desk and opening it up.

"Want me to hold her?" she offered. It didn't look so difficult, holding a baby, so she figured she could manage it for a few minutes to give Derek the opportunity to do whatever he needed to do.

Daisy gave out a cry of indignation when Lydia took her hand back to walk away and Derek gave her his finger instead, which she promptly shoved right into her mouth, making him wince. Lydia came back a moment later and opened the laptop for him before offering to take the baby. Why she was sticking around was a mystery to Derek, except maybe it was just too much like a train wreck for her to look away.

"Yeah, please," he said after a moment, carefully handing Daisy over to her. "Be careful, she wiggles," he advised, prying Daisy's fist open to get his finger back and sitting down at the desk, pulling open an internet browser and navigating to Google. Safest town to raise a family he typed in and clicked enter. Then he opened another tab and repeated the process, this time typing. Real estate for sale was the second search and while it loaded, he toggled back to the first.

Daisy snagged a chunk of Lydia's hair in her little hand and pulled gleefully.

"Ow, no, hair is not for pulling," Lydia said, shifting Daisy to her hip so she could untangle her hair from the baby's fist. She glanced over at the baby seat and saw a tiny stuffed giraffe in it, so she bent to grab it, making it dance in front of Daisy's face.

She glanced over at the computer screen to see what Derek was doing. "You're going to move?"

The baby grunted with frustration and grabbed at Lydia's eye instead, when her fingers were pulled away from the hair, but when she saw her favorite toy she screamed with excitement, making a sloppy attempt to clap her hands together while reaching for the stuffed animal.

Derek clicked a link and scrolled through the article looking for anywhere at least near California because he wanted to be close enough for Cora to still feel inclined to visit, maybe, someday. Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, Colorado... Irvine, California was number three on the list and Derek switched tabs again, clicking on the search area and detailing the search a little more by adding in Irvine, California to it before refreshing the search results.

"Well, I can't raise her here," Derek replied as if it was just common sense. To him, it was. This place had no good memories left for him and he wasn't going to pass that down to his child. He certainly wasn't going to stay here knowing it would make her more vulnerable than she already was being left with him in the first place. "Eleven thousand listings, are you kidding me? How do you—God I hate computers," he growled, shoving the laptop away from himself for a second to gather his thoughts.

Lydia supposed that she couldn't blame him for not wanting to raise a baby in Beacon Hills. Especially since they reactivated the Nemeton. There was always some sort of danger lurking in the shadows and it was hardly a safe place for a baby. She found that she didn't particularly like the idea of Derek leaving though, and that surprised her. Why should she care? It wasn't like they were friends.

It must just be because she was tired of losing people. Even if Derek hadn't always been on their side, he was someone that the pack could count on these days and their allies seemed to be dwindling all the time.

She bounced Daisy on her hip, letting the girl grab the giraffe, whose head immediately went in her mouth, and she looked over Derek's shoulder. "What exactly are you looking for?" she asked. "Your search is too broad."
