It certainly felt like a lifetime ago. Derek had a hard time remembering when he was less cynical, when he had hope for his life, when he had Paige. So much changed since then and he had lost more than any person should have to lose in a lifetime.

"I wasn't bad," he said. "You know, werewolf abilities gave me an advantage." Something that probably wasn't all that fair, but he liked being part of a team. In fact, he had been pretty popular as a teenager, not unlike Lydia herself.

"Cheater," she teased, reaching for her mug again and taking another sip before setting it back down and snuggling into Derek's comforter. "You were adorable back then," she added, "I don't know what happened..." She kept her tone light so that he knew she was teasing him in the hopes that he wouldn't fall down the rabbit hole of thinking about all the terrible things he'd been through. Once the words left her mouth, she wished that they hadn't once she realized the potential was still there, but she couldn't unsay them.

"It's weird thinking about you my age..." she admitted after a pause.

"What, I'm not adorable now?" Derek joked, sitting back down and picking up his own mug. Why did people like tea so much? He would much rather have a beer even though he couldn't get drunk.

He was already thinking about those things, so her words didn't make it any worse. "It wasn't all that long ago, Lydia," he added. "I'm not that old."

Adorable wasn't really the word she'd use if she was going to describe Derek now. They hadn't ever really gotten along and she only trusted him because Scott seemed to, but she wasn't blind. Any idiot could see that Derek was an attractive man, at least conventionally so. "Don't push your luck," she laughed, rolling her eyes and shivering a little, reaching for the tea again and this time, holding the warm mug in her hands after she'd sipped from it.

"I know," she said, shrugging a little. "But I saw you like that. You're different now." Taller. Hairier. Less charismatic. More jaded, undoubtedly.

"Yeah, well, a lot happened between then and now," Derek said with a shrug. He wasn't sure exactly what Lydia knew about his history, but he was sure it was enough to explain why he changed so much.

He noticed her shiver again and frowned. "Are you still cold?" he asked. The temperature was definitely dropping more in the loft and it didn't seem like the power was coming back anytime soon.

"I'm sure," she said. Lydia didn't know much, but she knew about the fire. She'd seen the Hale House in its prime, even if it was dusty and empty on the inside and nothing more than a facade, she'd seen the majesty of it from the outside, thanks to Peter jacking her mind. That alone and the deaths that came with it could've been enough to drive most people mad. Peter was a perfect example. The fact that Derek was still mentally at least good at pretending to be in one piece was impressive. Losing her best friend had taken a painful toll on Lydia; she couldn't even imagine the agony Derek must've gone through.

She looked sheepish for a second at teh question. "I can't believe you're not," she countered rather than answering directly with a yes.

Derek wasn't cold, but he could definitely feel the chill in the air. He knew that it must be a lot worse for Lydia, especially since her legs were bare under the comforter.

After a moment of hesitation, he put his mug down and shifted on the sofa, holding his arms out. "Come here," he said. "Werewolves run hotter than humans. If we huddle under the blanket together, you'll be warmer."

Her chin lifted a little and she bit back a reflexive response to buy herself time to give one that wouldn't sound ungrateful. Scott trusted Derek, but at the end of the day, even though she'd mostly put it behind her, Lydia couldn't just forget that Derek had tried to have her killed not all that long ago. She was a stubborn soul if nothing else, and she didn't like the idea of giving in and admitting that she might want — or need — someone else's help, especially Derek Hale's.

So she was quiet for a moment as she regarded him and when another cold chill ran through her, making her whole body shudder with it, she couldn't pretend anymore that she didn't need to do something, because this blanket wasn't cutting it and the sweatshirt was only helping so much.

"...yeah, okay," she agreed, chewing her bottom lip a little. Lydia put her own mug down again and she hesitated, but finally, she got to her feet to unravel herself from the blanket and then sat back down on the couch, sliding a little closer to Derek and offering him the side of the blanket that wasn't still covering her.

Derek took the blanket and wrapped it around them both before dropping his arm around Lydia's shoulders. This was beyond awkward, but he couldn't let her freeze and without knowing what was responsible for the blackout, it wasn't safe for them to go anywhere. Hopefully Scott would get in touch soon and let them know what was happening.

"Better?" he asked.

No, she thought wildly, awkward. Awkward is the word you're looking for, Derek. But, even she had to admit that she could already feel the body heat radiating off of him. "Jesus...you're like a walking furnace..." she observed and, without really meaning to, found herself moving closer still until her side was flush up against his.

Derek wasn't terribly surprised that she moved closer when she realized how much body heat he was throwing off. It was kind of nice having her there though and he really didn't want to think about that.

"I told you that we tend to run hotter than humans," he said.

"Yeah, you weren't kidding," she agreed.

...being this close to Derek presented a unique dichotomy. On the one hand, she was so much warmer and if she didn't think too much on the fact that it was Derek and didn't let herself consider how weird that was, she actually felt...kind of comfortable there, nestled against his side. "I'm starting to think this is just a regular, run of the mill blackout," she admitted quietly. "And that Scott's not going to find anything and that I probably should've just braved the lack of traffic lights and gone home..."

She started to wonder what the hell she was supposed to do if the power didn't come back on at all that night. Scott hadn't planned for that and so neither had Lydia. It hadn't actually occurred to her until just then as she'd said it.

Derek hadn't actually considered that either. If the power didn't come back on soon, she was either going to have to drive across town with no traffic lights or stay here all night. Neither option was all that attractive to him. He wasn't sure when he started to actually care about Lydia's well being, but he didn't like the idea of her driving home alone.

Having her spend the night in his loft wasn't exactly something he was looking forward to either though. "Well, if we don't hear from him soon, we'll call him and see what's going on," he said.

Pressing her lips together, Lydia took a deep breath and then sighed it back out again. "You know, if it's nothing supernatural...I can probably just go," she pointed out. "It's not that big a deal."

Her eyes shifted to her phone sitting on the coffee table beside her abandoned cup of tea. Lydia felt a draft and without meaning to, curled into his side a little tighter.

"I don't mind you hanging out," Derek said. "Driving across town with the traffic lights out is dangerous."

Not as dangerous as a lot of the other things they'd dealt with in Beacon Hills, but for some reason, he found himself hoping that she would stick around longer. Maybe he should make more of an effort to interact with other people.

"So is driving with the traffic lights on," Lydia countered gently. She doubted it would be a whole lot warmer at her house, but at least she had a fireplace she could utilize, whereas Derek did not.

...but, on the other hand, she would also be all by herself at home, more than likely, and if she was honest with herself, Derek was turning out to be fairly decent company. Unexpectedly, but there it was.

"Look, I don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth, I really don't, Derek, but I have to ask...why are you being so nice?" she asked, tilting her head to look up at him and feeling her stomach twist a little when she realized just how close she was to him as she did so. "I know you don't like me. I wouldn't like me, either, after...Peter. Not that that was my fault, but..." She figured mentioning that he'd had his pack trying to kill her was a moot point, since he knew just as well as she did that he did. There was no point rubbing the salt in the wounds — hers as a past victim of the stalking for the purpose of that level of violence and his in that he was wrong and, beyond that, had lost that pack, in the end.

It was a fair question and one Derek couldn't blame her for asking. There was a lot of history between them, most of it unpleasant, but deep down, Derek liked to think he was one of the good guys. Yes, he made some mistakes, particularly when he made his pack, but that was in the past and he was trying to atone for those mistakes.

"I probably owe you an apology for that," he admitted. "It wasn't my finest moment." It also wasn't really an answer to her question, but there was no easy answer to why he was being nice, so he wasn't sure what to say.

And yet he didn't give one, she noticed, but did not make any attempt to point out. "So...because you feel bad?" she prompted, shifting away from him a little bit, because being this close to Derek and realizing she was this close to Derek were two very separate things.

"Yes," he said. Then immediately followed it up with "No."

After another moment, he said, "I don't know, Lydia. I regret a lot of the things I did and I know I can't ever make up for them. I guess I'm being nice because, well, I can be."

The yes made sense to Lydia. The no that came on its heels to negate it did not.

But the follow up clarifying the discrepancy made sense, so she came out of it knowing what he meant. ...and she couldn't help thinking that he'd let his guard down just then and Lydia had never seen Derek do that.

Once again, her lips pressed together for a moment in thought, and then she looked back up at him. "Well...thank you," she said. "For the record, it looks good on you."

It was rare for Derek to let his guard down like that and he was a little embarrassed that he had done it. He shrugged off her thanks and seized on her other statement to change the subject.

"Am I adorable yet?" he asked, clearly teasing her about her earlier comments about his teenage self.

Lydia huffed a laugh of surprised incredulity at his question. "Well you kind of were until you opened your mouth," she replied, lifting her chin and her eyebrows in challenge. "Do you want to be adorable? I feel like most grown men would prefer any adjective but," she added.

"I don't get adorable usually," Derek said. "It feels like a challenge now."

He was used to hearing rugged, handsome, sexy even. And, sure, those were all well and good. Derek wasn't modest about his looks.

"Ooohh," Lydia said, drawing the word out and grinning. "Well, I hope you don't think I'm just going to give it to you all willy-nilly. You're probably not used to having to try to get a compliment you want out of a woman, but you're going to have to work for adorable," she let him know and Lydia realized a little bit belatedly that it sort of felt like they were flirting.

Derek had the same realization at the same time and stiffened a little. What the hell was he doing flirting with Lydia Martin? And why was she flirting back?

"If making you tea and keeping you warm don't qualify as adorable, I'm not sure what would," he said, keeping his tone light, but trying not to sound flirty. It didn't really work.
