Bella ran a damp cloth over the surface top in the small kitchen area, wiping the crumbs into her open hand. She'd had a simple supper of pasta, salad and a slice of bread. She wasn't in the mood for eating a lot. She never had had the best appetite, even at home. It was hard to want to eat much when your boyfriend couldn't join in. Edward used to just sit and watch her sometimes and although she felt far more comfortable with it now than she had at the beginning, it wasn't high on her list of ways to spend time with him. It just made her think of how much she wanted to be like him. Every day her body was getting older, and now she was here, away from him, wasting precious time.
Still, she felt slightly better about the situation now she knew Alice was here. At least there was someone in this strange place that wasn't completely unfamiliar or hostile like Leah. Besides, she wasn't sure she wanted to see Leah. She remembered her as a little tomboy girl, running around the reservation with her brother. It might just be too strange to see her all grown up, even older than Bella was now. And she knew about the future, and Bella definitely didn't want to be tempted to ask. As long as Edward was alright in the future, even though it had been destroyed now she was here, away from him, that was all that mattered.
Bella shook the cloth out over the sink before dropping the crumbs from her hand into the bin. She used to cook and clean for Charlie at home, so this wasn't too much of a deviation. She had offered to make Jo dinner, but she could understand why she had declined. They hardly knew each other after all. It was bad enough having to share this cabin, but perhaps dinner together was a bit much. Bella just wanted to feel useful. She had hoped it would take her mind off things. It hadn't.
