This was new territory for Edgar. He and Cate were not without their disagreements, of course. They had different ideas on how to raise their children sometimes. They had different rules and different allowances, differences in how they expressed affection, and ways they handled frustration and adversity. All of those things were easy enough to weather, though. They were a team and always had been, so they took each argument as simple disagreements, not fights and they always came out stronger for it. This was different. Edgar knew he was at fault for most of what happened, but there were things he was hurt by as well. Things that he hadn't brought up and had simply let fester like an open wound until it became too painful to endure. He wasn't sleeping, nor was he eating much. Moody had called him on it, so Bones had eaten lunch today, but his stomach had wanted to reject it. He'd come to the conclusion that it was partially this fight. Cate had always been his strength when he needed it--a reason to fight. Now she was telling him not to fight. To go against his nature of getting justice for wrongs committed and just let it go. Maybe it was pride, but there was more to it than that. He had never apologized for who he was or how he approached things in the past. It was dangerous now, but if he didn't step up who would? The worst part was that he needed her. He needed her support to keep going, because the misery that came along with this fight was like he'd never experienced before. Perhaps it was residual of just losing his parents and not having her at his side, but he was feeling it like a knife twisted in his gut. "Hey," he called gently when he got home, shutting the door behind him and taking off his cloak. He didn't know how to broach the subject, how to give an apology then explain why he also kind of needed one. He didn't really know anything, so in true Edgar Bones fashion, he was just going to wing it. |
