To say that the last couple of weeks had been awkward would have been a bit of an understatement. It wasn't that things were tense, because they weren't, not really, but there was definitely an air of general avoidance and Remus was about a hundred and fourteen percent certain it was all his doing. Which was just typical.
Now that he'd had time to think about it, he was painfully aware he'd made a mistake and he really wouldn't blame Sirius for hating him for it. Still, as stilted as conversations may have been lately, he knew that Sirius wouldn't abandon him on this night. Which probably said wonders about their relationship already.
At any rate, he knew he had to say something, and being him, he decided he may as well do so tonight. It was his secret to success: always have an exit strategy. In this case, if the conversation didn't turn out as hoped, he could always turn into an highly untalkative wolf at the end of it.
There were some advantages to lycanthropy if one looked for them creatively.
They were under covering from the trees just a few metres from the the edge of the river. Remus was leaning against the trunk of a large pine tree, fiddling absently with the thread hanging at the sleeve of his shirt. He wasn't sure how to bring up the subject, but he knew he had to, and quickly. He cut the silence with a mostly harmless question. "Do you realise it's been just over three months since you've arrived in the village?"
