The registration table is a simple affair, and the eggs are hidden throughout the town: In the laundromat and the library, in the rec center and at makeout point, in the apple orchards and on the farms. The gloaming is threatening darkness, and lanterns and flashlights are available for our intrepid hunters. Baskets are also provided, and seeking partners are encouraged to mingle and find each other via nametags and the postcard they received with their fellow hunter's name. There are refreshments, beer and wine and finger foods, but the hunt gets underway immediately. After all, it is getting dark. As soon as two paired matches encounter each other, be it at the registration desk or elsewhere in town, the hallucinogenics on their nametags syncs up, and the rest is history. [Hallucinations] [No. 1 → Me and My Shadow: Something is following you. It mirrors your every movement. It's in the corner of your eye, but when you turn, it isn’t there. Your partner, however, can see its every detail, and see how it uses your every move to pivot closer and closer to them. No. 2 → Teeth: A family is in your path, dressed in pastels. They say they are part of the egg hunt staff. They hold baskets, and they say they are full of refreshments for participants. They ask you to open the lid and reach inside, and you feel a compelling need to open the lid. They smile and have teeth, they have teeth, they have... No. 3 → Torches and Pitchforks: They found out about you. They know. The mob of a hundred is running after you with lights and weapons, and they are fast. No. 4 → Search Party: Ten of them are carrying flashlights, and their dogs are barking and straining on their leashes. They are methodical, slow, and looking for you. No. 5 → Cloud: A dark shape blots out the moon. When you look up, you see a cloud of winged shapes the size of dogs descending on you like a murmuration of sparrows, moving as one. No. 6 → Beast: The ground ahead of you is shaking with its arrival, hard enough to almost knock you off your feet. No. 7 → Somebody to l o v e: Someone you care about appears. They want you to come with them, just a short way away and behind that distant obstacle. But what lies behind? What do they want you to see? No. 8 → Failure: The ground opens beneath you without warning. There is no time to scream, only to grab for support. If you fall, it’s an endless, black drop. No. 9 → Singing: A voice is singing. Not an indistinct voice, and not a beautiful one. The voice is your voice. It is singing louder and louder. It is singing all your secrets for your partner to hear. And most of them don’t even rhyme. No. 10 → Jester: The jester appears! He has three riddles for you. Wrong answers have negative consequences on your personality for the remainder of the hunt - perhaps lowered intelligence, or raised aggression, or an overweening quality of hubris. Whatever it is, it’s going to make it harder to work together. Answer correctly and you get an Easter egg! No. 11 → The Gaggle: A gaggle of monstrous, half-human things encircles the pair of you. The only way out is through. Reason or fight your way out, but the circle is tightening by the minute. No. 12 → Poppies: You stumble across an outgrowth of strange flowers. They glow in the low light. They also make it very, very hard to think. What kind of a hunt were you on, again? No. 13 → Hands: Hands reach up from the world below to drag you down. Get to high ground or join them underneath. No. 14 → Collector: He wants to put you in the sack. No. 15 → The Light: It slices down from above and singes the ground like a laser, a thin, distinct line of destruction that splinters trees and turns soil into glass with heat. It glows on the ground before firing. You have three seconds to get clear of each blast, and a hundred yards to run. No. 16 → The Swamp: The ground was solid a moment ago, but now you’re sinking inexorably downward. The harder you struggle, the faster you sink. Better hope one of you is still on dry land - or that there’s something to reach for. No. 17 → War Zone: How can you possibly have found an active battlezone during an Easter egg hunt? Bombs are dropping and there’s gunfire coming from a distant fortification, but you don’t see any other soldiers. No. 18 → Do Cyborgs Dream: They carry masks. They want to fit you with them. They want you to join their ranks. They have strong, soft hands. No. 19 → Hangers On: It drops onto your back from somewhere above, heavy as a sack of potatoes, and it clings. No. 20 → When it Rains: A monsoon washes over you and begins to flood the world. The tide is rising. Find safety, float, or drown. No. 21 → The Darkest Hour: Where did the moon go? Where are the stars? It’s so dark you can’t see your hands in front of you. And what’s that humming sound? No. 22 → Fenced In: A fence has erupted between you and the surrounding world, a circle of worn wood planks. You can get no purchase on them, and you cannot see the world outside. Only by not trying to escape for several minutes at a stretch will the walls fall again. No. 23 → The Ferryman: Was this river always here? There is only one way across - you’ll have to get into the Ferryman’s boat. The current is too swift to swim, so settle in for a slow ride to the other bank. And try not to look into the water. No. 24 → The Maze: You thought you knew this town well, but didn’t you just come this way? Didn’t you just pass that store, that tree? No. 25 → The Tea Party: Sit a while. Invisible figures have laid out refreshments on a lavish table, and they are serving. Invisible hands pour the tea - invisible hands pass the cakes. No. 26 → The Tower: The tower rises above you, and something glints inside the window at the top. So many flights of stairs to reach the parapet - but it may be worth it yet.] Unbeknownst to our egg hunters or organizing officials, a Tethys scientist is hovering, taking notes of the results of his experiment. The hallucinogenics will last until darkness gives light to morning, and residents are welcome to keep their eggs... if they're so inclined. |
