Every Valentine’s day Dante knew to receive a text from Hector. When precisely she was never sure - even if she did know his habits - simply because she’d normally try not to think about it. This day was miserable normally and well… This one wasn’t shaping up that way but at the same time, it was just better not to think about any of that. It was only when she felt his familiar data signals that Dante would check her phone to see what he’d sent today. Even though Hector knew that Valentine’s Day was not Dante’s favorite, to put it politely, he had a habit of texting her on nearly every major holiday as it was, and this was no exception. He made sure to wait until her day had already started so as to not bother her when she first woke up. Around noon her time, Hector sent a quick text while sitting around. 'Hola Mija. Happy Valentine’s Day! Hope it’s going well!' ‘Hola papa! Happy Valentine’s Day!’ Was instantly sent back. Normally here she’d groan or grumble or cuss out whatever was around but today was… Well. It wasn’t really all that fucking bad. ‘You know, it is.’ Was quickly sent as a follow up and… That… That felt fucking weird. He was caught off guard by the follow up message. Dante having a good Valentine’s Day? That was unusual. Naturally, Hector had to know why. ‘Oh? What’s good about today?’ The follow up wasn’t really surprising considering how soaked in desperation people normally were and how much she fucking hated that. ‘You know, good flow of work in the shop. Weather’s not too bad out. Friend brought me coffee. Haven’t been hit on or proposed too yet.’ A little smirk couldn’t be helped with the joke. He couldn’t help but respond in his natural, joking dad fashion. Even if he wanted to try to not make a joke, he couldn’t. ‘You could receive a mysterious proposal at any time! Well, you still have 12 hours left in the day.’ ‘And dinner plans to boot.’ Dante popped off the message without a thought, just letting the joke flow along as felt natural to do. Hector almost dropped his phone in shock. ‘Dinner plans with who?’ Now he was fully invested in Dante’s day. It wasn’t until she read the response from her father that the joke actually settled in her own brain and she- …. She…. Well, no that didn’t really have… It was when Leena wanted to get her gifts… But they… They’d probably have dinner too… And by the time they did dinner and gifts and Dante would have to shower and… ‘Well, it’s not really dinner plans. It’s just a friend coming over for their gifts, you know. El Día del Amor y la Amistad.’ Hopefully, that would clear all of this right the fuck up. That was slightly less exciting, almost disappointing. But there was still hope depending on what kind of gifts Dante was talking about. ‘Sure. What kind of gifts did you get this friend?’ This new text earned a lingering pause. A glance would be taken over her shoulder to make sure she could easily step away from work if this turned into something more complex. ‘Just like a little toy or two with a couple balloons cause they were cute, nothing big.’ Was sent but something about this still… Felt off. Throwing all caution to the wind, he responded with a quick text. ‘A kid’s type toy or an adult one?’ ‘!Aye, papa!’ Was instantaneously sent back as her brain read the initial text but it was quickly followed with. ‘It’s just a little silly magic eight ball and a 3d puzzle’ He chuckled at his daughter’s immediate response. ‘So you bought this puzzle for this friend because you like them, right?’ ‘Well yeah, I don’t buy shit for assholes.’ Was thoughtlessly sent back. ‘I think you know that’s not how I meant it. But in case you missed the hidden meaning there, I meant you have romantic feelings for this person.’ ‘What? No!’ It was a knee jerk response and- ‘No, I didn’t know that was how you meant it.’ Fuck what was with people and assuming she fucking got this shit. ‘Well, who else have you bought a gift for that has any sort of meaning similar to a 3D puzzle, other than myself? It makes sense for me to assume there’s something more there.’ ‘I was looking at puzzles and I happened to see one of a cat. IDK I just thought she’d fucking like it since she likes cats. I didn’t really think about anything else.’ What the fuck was going on with this conversation? ‘That doesn’t really answer my question, though. I can’t remember you mentioning buying gifts for anyone before this?’ ‘I got Hugh and Chris cards and gift certs. Sent a bunch of people in town tres leches cake.’ The fact that those ‘gift certs’ were for things like brunches and household repairs she’d leave out. ‘Those are nice, but they feel kind of impersonal when compared to getting someone something that you deeply enjoy while thinking they would also enjoy it? But I could be overthinking things? I got a little excited because it sounded like you were saying you had a date...’ ‘IDK, it was just a cat and something I thought she might like. I didn’t think about it a lot.’ She’d leave out the instantaneous immediate need she’d felt to buy several little items because that shouldn’t be important right? ‘Well, even though it may not seem like that was a really deeply thought out gift to some, to me it seems pretty thoughtful? Taking her likes into account for a gift that the two of you might be able to enjoy together? Is the puzzle for Leena?’ ‘I wasn’t planning on like doing the kitty puzzle with her. IDEK if she likes puzzles. Figured it might be worth a laugh.’ Why was she responding like this? Sure it wasn’t something she’d put much thought into but why was she feeling like she needed to fucking defend that fact. Though the guess… ‘Yeah.’ She’d start to type again before pausing. The little dots arising and then falling away. There would be another start then stop and another before she’d let out a huff. Dante didn’t even fucking know what she wanted to say. ‘It’s for Leena.’ ‘Is she spending the night after you exchange gifts?’ The question was innocent but pointed. Dante’s jaw dropped at the question. What… What the hell was this? ‘IDK, maybe? She’s coming over after work for gifts so like I’ll need to shower and we’ll probably need to both eat and whatever.’ 'Do you want her to spend the night…?' Dante had to step away from work as she just stared at the message. The… Well… She’d just sort of assumed Leena was going to. They just sort of spent time together. ‘IDK, I guess I sort of expected her to? Hector wasn't sure what answer he was expecting when he asked his question. He didn't know how to respond for a few moments. Instead of trying to keep texting because it seemed to be causing confusion, at least on his end, he opted for a phone call. He sent a quick text to let her know before dialing. 'Calling real quick.' If Dante answered, he would say, "Will she be staying for breakfast if she spends the night?" The sudden jarring feeling of an unexpected phone call from her father incoming caused Dante to pause and blink and… Look very confusedly at her phone. Why…. Why was he calling all of a sudden? Had she said something wrong? Instead of thinking too much or hard on it she’d answer and bring the phone up to her ear, mouth opening to greet him when the question instantly came through the phone. “I-Uh… What?” Dante couldn’t help but blink. Hector paused, realizing he had just blurted out the question without even greeting Dante. That was...unusual. He wasn't even sure that it was too much enthusiasm or just a random moment of self-control issues. He took a breath and repeated his question. "If she does stay the night with you, will she be staying for breakfast?" “What’s that supposed to mean?” Dante couldn’t help but instantly fire back almost defensively, it wasn’t quite there but… What the hell? His head cooked to the side at the question. It came back far quicker than he'd expected. But that was fine with him. "Well, you've never had a one night stand stay for breakfast before." Hector’s sentence left Dante’s mouth feeling dry and there was silence on her end. Obviously the phone call hadn’t dropped from the sounds of the shop in the background but if it hadn’t been for those... What… What did…. “... she hasn’t been a one night stand…” The words were quiet and small in a way that felt awkward and uncomfortable but likely sounded nothing like that. It was hesitant and uncomfortable…? Uneasy? … weirdly vulnerable admission of something but precisely what Dante still wasn’t really all that sure. They were friends, this was to help Leena, they were from different worlds… It probably wasn’t… more… Hector grinned. It was a wide grin. A hopeful grin. It sounded like his baby was finally discovering love! But he was going to keep that under wraps for now. Log it away to bring up later. With a mildly happier tone to his voice than before, he very simply stated, "Sounds like a date to me!" The noise Dante let out couldn’t be helped as it crossed between a strangled off rebuttal and a bark of surprise. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” She finally firmly attempted to state but the words came out a little too fast, a little too self-justifying to really be all that believable and she could even hear it - and she was fucking surprised by that - in her own voice. “Oh shit, Diego needs my help in the shop dad. Looks like we just had a bunch of customers come in. I’m gonna have to go.” It was good that Dante couldn't see the somewhat smug look on Hector's face. Instead of voicing it, he just nodded even though she couldn't see that either. "Alright, mija. I love you and have a great...night!" He had been tempted to say "date" but didn't. “Okay, I love you, bye.” but it likely sounded more like ‘okayiloveyoubye’ And that was the quickest Dante had ever hung up the phone in her life. Okay. Well. It was time to get back to work. Fuck. |
