fair deal
Who: Emilie, Bishop and Rodeo.
Where: Mr. Wizard Electronics, 1507 North Loop Blvd.
What: It's the last fair deal gone down.
When: [Backdated to] 6/2/18, the day after the first Blob storm.
Rodeo knows this place.
Mr. Wizard Electronics has the distinction of being one of those places that closed before the rest of the world did. The cluttered electronics shop had sat abandoned behind overgrowth long before the zombies came and emptied everywhere else out. But this is not his first time coming here. He remembers the store from when it was still open for business. Before the end of the world, before Hunstville, he came here with Sarge and some of their friends. Sam O'Dell wanted to buy a video camera, he said he was going to film a mockumentary about their lives as outlaws. The owner sold Sam a piece of shit camcorder for thirty bucks, and that night everyone had busted their guts while trying to come up with their on-camera aliases. They never even made the damn mockumentary, because only a couple hours after they left this store Sarge had a knife in his lung.
This isn't his first time back in here. He's haunted this place a couple other times before, taking a TV and VCR, an old walkman, a couple of stereos, and a Polaroid camera. But this time the place is actually getting to him. Sarge is back home in quarantine, and though Rodeo left Adelaide there with him, he feels the pull to get back to his friend.
But this has to be done, and the store was the first location to come to mind when Rodeo told the Ghoul-bitch to meet him. It's several blocks away from the nearest subway entrance, which puts the Ghouls at a disadvantage. He doesn't suspect that this girl is the type to bring an army with her, but it's better to be safe than sorry. There's a few prospects outside, keeping an eye on the entrances, watching out for anyone approaching. They know the only one allowed to enter is the girl-- a girl Rodeo described to them as "scary-hot." He went on to make it clear that he didn't mean "so hot that it's scary," but rather, "so scary that it's hot."
There's an important distinction there.
The anxiety over being away from Sarge keeps him tense and restless. Rodeo wanders through the darkened store as he waits, but he does't venture far from Bishop. Considering the delicate nature of this meeting, he thought his most sagacious officer was probably his safest bet. Backup any more high-strung than Bishop would probably escalate Rodeo's nervous mood to dangerous proportions. Besides, he's always reckoned Bishop to be an impeccable judge of character. He's curious what his Chaplain will make of this strange mad-eyed beauty.
Rodeo stops his pacing to squint at a shadowy shelf, pursing his lips. He reaches out, picking up a Furby off the shelf. He fiddles with the on/off switch, but it doesn't turn on. "Now see. I always thought it was gonna be these things that ended the world."
