Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:! log, 1998-january, character: norah bones, character: oliver wood

Who: Oliver and Norah
What: Dinner/Dancing/etc
Where: Glasgow, Scotland
When: Evening, Saturday 24 January
Rating: Fairly tame- a couple of kisses!
Status: Threaded, Complete

Oliver wove his way through the busy room back to the table he and Norah shared. They'd arrived maybe fifteen minutes before, at a new club he'd discovered. There was a stage with a big band currently playing, and a large dance floor where couples were dancing. It wasn't a super casual place, but it also wasn't so formal that he felt uncomfortable- he really appreciated that.

He smiled as he handed Norah a glass with her drink and sipped on his own glass of scotch on the rocks. His thoughts went to Bailey for a moment and he wondered how she was doing- but she was with her grandparents, so he was sure she'd be fine. He looked back to Norah- she did look really nice tonight. It wasn't a date, but he was really glad she'd agreed to come with him- his feelings for Norah were a little more complicated than he cared to admit. He'd had a crush on her back at Hogwarts, but timing never seemed to work out for them and he'd never actually said anything to her about it. Besides, they both seemed to be doing just fine as friends and nobody was going to get hurt. Besides, who else could he do silly things like this with?

"Are you hungry?" Ollie asked her, glancing toward the stage. "Or we could dance a little. Or just people watch and judge some of these ladies' dresses..?" He winked, playfully, not terribly serious about his last suggestion.

If Ollie hadn't made reservations, Norah was sure they would have been a couple of the poor souls holding up the bar in this crowd. As it was, they had a table to call their own, though they still had to swim through bodies to get drinks. Which she let Ollie do.

It's not that she was adverse to all the people. It was that she'd managed to make it to their table without tripping on her shoes. Norah didn't often wear heels because she was prone to clumsiness, and she gave Ollie her drink order and watched as he walked away in his kilt. She turned her attention to the club and found that she really liked it. The music was fantastic, and the dancing couples looked really good. The space was cool, and she wished she'd gone with the red pencil skirt in her closet instead of the one she'd put on.

Her attention was on the band and dancers. She was amazed by how good they were, and she didn't notice the men watching her. She wasn't so distracted that she lost track of her friend, especially after he'd been gone for some time. She'd only just started looking around for him, though, when he returned to their table. She sipped her drink appreciatively. "I wish I could dance like that, but I might hurt you if we tried, and your coach wouldn't be happy." Norah grinned broadly at Ollie. "I could eat, though, and pretend to be judgmental." She spotted a girl with dark hair glaring at her. "Kind of like that girl is being. I think she has eyes for you."

Norah didn't like the thought of someone eyeing Ollie while she was there, but she firmly told herself that she had no claim on him.

"It's not as hard as it looks," Oliver replied with a laugh. "I'm sure I could teach you some of the basic swing steps with little damage, if you wanted."

He slid into the seat diagonal from her and took another sip of his whiskey before smiling to Norah in return. "Eating is good. I'm sure we can flag down a waiter here for food orders." He plucked a menu from the table, flipping it open and setting it down between them. His gaze flickered to the dark haired girl, but only for a moment and he kept his attention on Norah. "Is she? Huh. You know, I'm still not used to being recognized by strangers on the street. And don't worry- I'm here with you tonight, remember? Let her look."

Norah smiled at the obtuseness of her friend. Some days, she wondered at how he was unaware of how attractive he was. "I'm pretty sure she isn't staring because she recognizes you, Olli," she said, her head close to his as she looked over the menu. She flushed with pleasure but suppressed her grin. Instead, she nudged his knee with hers.

"I'll let you teach me. I trust you." She looked at him sideways. "But none of the flips, or we'll end up in a heap on the floor." She chewed on her straw thoughtfully as she made herself focus on the food choices. "What are you having?"

Oliver blinked, looking to Norah. "Wha- you think?" He'd never seen himself as especially good looking- he knew he was in shape, and he wasn't especially ugly, but there were so many other blokes that got attention for their looks. He grinned as she nudged his knee

"No flips." Ollie smiled. "I'm not that good- I just took a few beginner classes with Regan a couple of summers back. She insisted she wanted to learn, so I went along with her." He looked to the menu. "I'm thinking maybe the chicken and veg? What about you?"

Norah raised her browse at her friend. "Think what? That she thinks you're attractive, or think that you're attractive?" She grinned mischievously to cover her slight flirtation and winked.

"Awww. Such a good brother. One of the reasons I know you're a good dad." She looked at the menu and read the description of what he was looking at. "So healthy. I was thinking fish and chips."

"Both. Either." Oliver breathed a laugh, smiling broadly as she winked and he shook his head a little. "I meant did you think she thinks I'm attractive, but I'll take your answer to both."

"There's a pasta there that sounds good, too. I might go for that. Mum still tells me I'm too skinny." He scrunched up his nose. "Fish and chips sound good, too. Order whatever you'd like, though, seriously. But we're saving room for dessert too, alright?"

Norah glanced at the other woman again. "She definitely does. She's undressing you with her eyes, wondering what you have on under your kilt, and trying to figure out what the bleeding hell you're doing with me and not her." She sat back and gave him an appraising look, taking her time to answer for herself. She was a bit nervous suddenly, and she caught her lip between her teeth thoughtfully. She shrugged. "I have thought so for a little over a decade. I mean, you were an adorable kid, and then puberty happened."

"So...fish and chips, and you can help me with the chips, and we'll dance off some of dinner before dessert." She grinned and skimmed the dessert menu, making small "mmm" sounds when she came across one she liked the sound of. "You're not too skinny."

"Huh." Oliver didn't look back to the woman, but leaned back in his seat a little as he picked up his drink for another sip. "Well, I'm with you because you're great fun and I thought we both could stand a night off. And I like spending time with you because I know you and I know you're not with me just for what you think might be under my kilt." His eyes widened a bit at her words, and he smiled a little bit. "Aye? I didn't know. For what it's worth, I've always thought you were pretty."

Oliver laughed and nodded his agreement. "I like how you think. And I'll gladly help you with whatever you want help finishing." He winked playfully. "Well, good. Quidditch keeps me in shape for the most part, so I'm not too worried- I think it's all the running."

Patting Ollie's arm reassuringly, Norah smiled. "I know why you're with me. She doesn't get it." She looked at him sideways and did wonder what he was wearing under his kilt, a query that was clearly written on her face, though she didn't voice it. Instead, she wrinkled her nose at him and laughed. "Aye," she said, mimicking his accent. "Aww. Really? I had no idea." She laughed again. "Well, shows you what we know.."

"Do you mean food, or painting my flat?" She was teasing. She wasn't painting her flat. "You're very fit, Ollie. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise."

"Of course not," Ollie replied with a laugh, especially once he saw the look on her face. "I'm a Scots, Norah. Don't ye think I know how to wear a proper kilt?" He thickened his accent as he teased and winked, laughing again as she mimicked his accent. "Really. Of course I do- why wouldn't I?"

"Both. Either. You know I'm here for you!" He smiled, glancing up as a waiter came to take their orders. Once he was gone, he turned his attention back to Norah with a smile.

She tried to look innocent, but she knew it wasn't working. Her smile was nothing that would be seen on an innocent person's face. He knew---he obviously knew what she'd been thinking, and her smile was both cheeky and suggestive. "Definitely no flips, then, or under the leg slides, or you'll be giving me and the rest of the crowd an entirely different show. Not that most would mind, exactly. You could probably get a few pound out of it, even, but at the expense of being banned from the bar entirely." Her cheeks were flaming, and she was babbling, but she was also thinking about her best friend half nude, and she couldn't help it.

When the waiter had left with their orders. Norah leaned over and gave Ollie a very chaste kiss on the cheek. "I'm very lucky to have your friendship."

Oliver couldn't help but laugh at her words and the look on her face. "Mmm. I don't want that. We'll be careful when we dance, I promise. The both of us." He winked, his own cheeks flushing a bit. He had nothing to be ashamed of, but this was Norah, of all people!

He smiled as she kissed him on the cheek. "The feeling is very mutual, Norah, you know that. I couldn't have made it through these last few months without you."

The rest of the evening continued in a similar vein - pseudo-flirting combined with very real fondness and friendly teasing. The food proved to be decent, though they both agreed that they'd had better ("At your table, even, Ollie"). Dessert was better, though Norah had definitely not danced enough of her meal off to condone eating so much of it on her own.

The dancing? That was almost the best part. They were ridiculous on the floor. Oliver did his best to teach his friend, and she did her best not to step on him. There were a few slow songs that were easier for her to do because she didn't have to find the beat while watching her feet. They switched off on who bought which round and, by the time they left, both had a lovely warm buzz.

If anyone had told Norah that there were other men who wanted to dance with her, she would have shrugged because she hadn't noticed. Though, she was quick to point out every woman making eyes at Oliver. Not that she wanted to play wingman for her friend. She could have, but she didn't think he should be with someone who went to clubs or pubs to pick up men.

By the end of the night, her feet were killing her, but she was happy and in good spirits. She fully intended to sleep in his spare room because apparating with a fuzzy brain was a very bad idea, and she was glad the club was connected to the Floo network in a back room. She had to borrow one of his tee shirts to sleep in, and she had lovely, alcohol-induced dreams of have naked Ollie swing dancing.

Dreams that she only vaguely remembered when she woke up the next morning. After brushing her teeth, and wearing only his shirt, she padded into the kitchen on quiet feet and began to make tea. The kettle had just sounded when she heard Oliver come in behind her. She turned to face him. "How strong do you want your tea?" Her voice was hoarse to her own years

Oliver had a great time- he couldn't remember having this much fun in quite a while. The food was alright, but the company was far better. He hardly paid attention to any of the other girls she pointed out, and he was more than happy to drink along with her.

By the time they made it back to his house, he was rather pleased that she'd decided to stay. He'd gladly let her borrow a shirt, and he thought he remembered drifting off with Norah snuggled up to his side, his arms around her.

He'd awoken alone, though, his head pounding. He heard a movement from the kitchen and it took him a moment to remember what he'd done the night before. He had initially wondered if Bailey had woken him, but then he remembered that she was with his parents. Norah!

Blinking sleep from his eyes, he padded out to the kitchen. His head still felt fuzzy and his mouth was dry. She looked lovely- he couldn't help it, there was something about the sight of her in his shirt. "Strong, please," he started, his accent thicker than usual and his voice still rough with sleep.

Norah grinned at her friend's white boxers and shirt. She could see the freckles on his shoulders, and she wanted to trace them. Her mind flashed to last night, to falling asleep cuddled against him.

Nodding, she turned back to the kettle, dropping the bags into the mugs and setting them to steep. Without thinking, she stretched above her head to put the tea back in Oliver's cupboard. It was when she felt the shirt ride up that she remembered she was only in her pants.

Blushing, and turning so her back was to the corner of the counter, she pushed one of the mugs towards Ollie and played with the tea bag in the other. "Did I---did we...literally sleep together last night?"

Oliver watched for a moment, momentarily distracted by her legs as she reached up. He stepped forward to lean against the counter beside her as she turned and pushed the mug toward him, and he nodded, slowly, wincing as the movement made him a little dizzy. "Aye," he breathed. "Nothing happened- I didn't- I mean. I wouldn't take advantage of you."

He hoped she wouldn't think that of him. Besides, they would have remembered if anything like that had happened. Wouldn't they? "I didn't feel you get up to leave, though."

Norah, out of habit, bumped his knee with hers before remembering there was nothing between their knees. So she touched his arm reassuringly. "I could never think you would, Ollie. I trust you completely. You know that." She shrugged and sipped her tea, careful not to scald her mouth. "I don't remember. I kept dreaming about kilts. I thought sleeping next to you was part of that dream. But I must have gotten up in the night for water or the loo."

She touched his head gently. "How are you more hung over than I am?"

"I know. Still, I feel like I have to say it." Ollie smiled as she bumped his knee and touched his arm. He laughed and his smile turned sheepish. "I'm out of practice. And I had a lot more liquor than beer."

His head tilted just toward her touch, and after a moment, he leaned down, gently brushing his lips against hers in a soft, simple kiss.

Norah nodded sagely. "This is why you should stick with the cider. Yes, it easy to forget that you're drinking something that contains an alcohol count, but it doesn't sneak up on you in the morning."

She smiled when he leaned into her hand, but every inch of her body froze when his lips touched hers. She forgot to breathe, and she looked at him wide-eyed when he moved away again. "You just..." Her hand was still on Ollie's head, and she moved her fingers from his temple and to her lips. "You just..."

"'s what I usually drink, but I've stopped since Bailey..."

Ollie blinked for a moment as she looked at him with wide eyes. "I- aye. I did." He swallowed heavily. "If it upset you, I- I'm sorry, I don't have to, I just- I've wanted-"

Norah licked her lips and laughed. It was an odd sound, one of mixed mirth and relief. Her cheeks were flushed, and she was a little warm, even though she barely wore anything.

Remember that made her blush further, but it didn't stop her from grabbing Oliver by his shoulders and pulling him to her so she could kiss him. It wasn't as simple as his, but it was just as soft, and she lingered.

Oliver made a soft sound of surprise as she pulled him close but he stepped closer, easily returning her kiss. After a moment, his hands moved to the small of her back. He didn't press for anything more, and he was smiling as they parted. "I- well. Hullo."

In response to his hands on her back, Norah loosened her grip on his shoulders and wrapped her arms around them loosely instead. Norah met his grin with one of her own when they parted, though she refused to let him retreat too far (and she couldn't because the counter was to her back).

"That is to say...I wasn't offended, and I would rather that you did, and I've wanted to know what that was like for years." She took a breath. "Hi."

"Aye? I have to admit, I've been curious for a while, too." Oliver smiled, leaning over to kiss her again, once more, just because he wanted to. "So..I mean, is this- are you interested in more- you know, the kissing? And just..seeing what happens? I'm not in any rush and there's no pressure or- or anything..."

"Aye," she replied, matching his accent. She returned his kiss without hesitation but let it be brief. She smiled almost shyly and looked at his shoulder. The freckles. As he spoke, she drew lines between the spots on his upper arm and nodded. "Aye," she said again, but quietly and in her own voice. She met his gaze. "More kissing and slowly seeing where this goes."

Norah moved her hand to Oliver's jaw, tracing the line of it from chin to ear with light fingers. "Bailey comes first, always, but I very much want to see where this goes."

Oliver laughed softly as she matched his accent and his eyes half closed as her fingers moved over his arm. He looked back to her as her gaze met his. "I- good."

He nodded slowly as her fingers trailed over his face and she spoke. "Yes, of course- I- thank you." He was grateful that she would say that- he couldn't imagine being with somebody that wouldn't care about Bailey as much as he did. "I'd like to see that, too. To try."

Norah wrapped her arms around Oliver's shoulders and hugged him close. "You don't have to thank me for that, Ollie. You're a father. She's your number one, and that's the way it should be."

She shook her head as she moved towards the stairs. "And I'm keeping this one." She looked over her shoulder at him. "It looks better on me anyway."
