WHO: Oliver Wood & Norah Bones (with appearances by Bailey Wood)
WHAT: Brunch!
WHEN: Sunday 18 January 1998, 1030 AM
WHERE: Oliver's home
RATING: A for awwww (low)
STATUS: Closed//Ongoing

Norah was a little late. Not a lot late, but late enough that she was worried they'd started eating without her. She had slept through all of her alarms. All of them, and she'd set three just in case. The night shift rounds were killing her. She missed sleep, and she missed sunlight, and she missed out on dressing pretty and doing fun things. Like the benefit ball for the hospital. She had a dress, thanks to her Aunt, and Oli had offered to take her, but she hadn't gotten the time off to go.

And now she was late for brunch. But at least she looked cute, and she had a new toy for her favourite person on the planet. She also brought a box of chocolate frogs for Oli so he wouldn't be jealous.

She came to a stop outside the Woods' door and paused long enough to catch her breath and straighten her jumper. With a knock, she tried the knob and let herself in. "Oli? Are you decent?"

Oliver didn't mind so much that Norah was late. Things had gotten a little bit crazy that morning- neither he nor Bailey had slept much the night before. She was teething, and had been fussy- they'd finally fallen asleep with her on his chest on the sofa. But they'd managed, and she was now settled in her playpen as Ollie finished making brunch- fresh fruit, french toast, eggs, the works. He had just poured himself a cup of tea when he heard the knock on the door and he moved to pick Bailey up, taking a moment to straighten her clothes and make sure he didn't have flour or anything like that all over him.

"Yes, yes, we're fine," he called back, grinning as he stepped out to greet Norah. He adjusted his hold on Bailey and stepped over to greet her with a hug. "Hullo, darling. It's good to see you."

Norah returned Oli's hug and kissed his cheek before she turned her full attention to Bailey. "Hello, sugarplum. Aren't you just the cutest?" She kissed Bailey's cheek, raspberrying it lightly until she got a smile. She didn't take the baby from her friend's arms, though it was a near thing. Instead, she stepped back and grabbed the little girl's toes. "If this outfit came in my size, I would so wear it."

She turned her broad smile on her friend and felt it slip just a smidge when she finally took in his face. "Don't take this the wrong way, but you look knackered." Norah linked her arm through Oliver's and steered him into his dining room. She pushed him gently to sit and as she pulled out the little giraffe from her bag. "Here you go, sweetling." She smiled encouragingly as she handed it to Bailey. "It's okay to chew it."

"I brought you a treat too, Oli. So don't feel left out. Breakfast first, though, then I'll take Bailey out for a bit, and you can nap."

Oliver grinned as Norah greeted Bailey, who smiled and clapped her hands together. She babbled, and Ollie leaned over to kiss his daughter on the cheek as well. "I have no doubt you would, darling."

He turned as she linked their arms and lifted his shoulder in a shrug. "Rough night- poor mite's teething and she hasn't been too happy." He settled in a seat, finding his wand to summon mugs so they could both have some tea. He smiled as Bailey reached for the giraffe. "Is it? Maybe she'll like that."

"God bless you, Norah. Are you sure, though? You have to be tired, too, with all your night shifts these days and all.."

Norah winked at her friend and gave Bailey's little piggies one more light squeeze.

She nodded. "It's designed for teething children, actually. I think it's supposed to be a little massage thing for their gums." Getting out of the way of the flying mugs, Norah grabbed the tea pot and poured for both of them. "I hope it helps. If not, you can always do what my granddad did and rub a bit of whiskey on her gums to numb them." Her grin at that was cheeky.

Patting Oliver's head, she finally took a seat. "I'm sure, Oli. I'm off tonight and tomorrow. I'll sleep then."

Oliver laughed a little as Bailey immediately started to gnaw on the toy. "I think she'll like it. I might have to resort to whiskey, though, if we have many more nights like last night. I finally fell asleep with her on the sofa- she's getting heavier!"

He smiled as she pat his head. "She might just nap, too, after breakfast. I'm not sure. Which reminds me- there's french toast and eggs and the works in the kitchen. I just hadn't gotten it all out to the table yet." He picked up his tea cup and took a sip, smiling happily. "I'm glad you were able to come over, though."

The mental image of Oli sleeping with his girl on his chest almost made Norah aww out loud. She managed, but only barely, to keep it to herself, but anyone paying attention to her face saw the sentiment clearly written there. "She's growing well, and on track," Norah said, looking at Bailey with a healer's eye. "And she's way cuter than you are," she said as one of Oli's oldest friends.

"I'll get them, you sit." She moved into his kitchen like she owned the place and brought the food back to the table by hand. She wasn't going to risk charms with food on the line. Once everything was set, Norah sat down and made herself and Oli plates then held her arms out for his daughter. "Give me and eat," she ordered. She smiled at her friend. "I'm glad, too."

Oliver saw the look on her face and he laughed softly- not maliciously. "Go ahead, make the sound I know you wanna." He didn't mind, not really. He nodded slowly, looking pleased. "Good. I'm doing my best by her, as I know you know. And- well, I'm grateful. I couldn't do it without you or my other friends and family."

He sat back a little, bouncing Bailey a little on his knee as Norah moved about the cottage. "Thanks," he said, leaning over to hand Bailey over. He reached for his fork and fell quiet as he started on his plate. "So I was thinking. I heard about a new place opening up in Glasgow- dinner and dancing and that sort of thing."

Norah wrinkled her nose at Oliver and refused to give in. She would not give him any sort of fuel to tease her, though her mere person was fuel for that. "You're doing a wonderful job," she told him honestly. "If anyone tries to say otherwise, they can answer to me." She knew, in theory, that being a single parent wasn't easy. For Oliver to be both mother and father to one so little, Norah could say, without condescension, that she was proud of him.

Once she had Bailey, Norah snuffled at her neck, making the girl giggle and herself laugh lightly. She looked up when Oliver spoke, her brows raised. "Oh? That sounds fun. Let me know when you plan to go, and I can get the night off to watch the munchkin for you."

"Thank you," Oliver replied, then smiled at her words. The smile faded a moment later and he shook his head. "No, I mean- well, I was thinking. Since you didn't get to go to the ball for St Mungo's, maybe we could go? You know, get all fancied up and go somewhere nice. Dinner and- I think they alternate dancing or shows of some sort. If you wanted to."

He smiled as Bailey giggled and he reached for his tea to take another sip, hoping he hadn't made things suddenly awkward. They were just friends, after all, and they both could stand to have some fun sometimes. One evening out could be nice! "No pressure or anything, though. Of course."

"Oh!" Norah laughed at herself, looking down at the girl drooling in her lap. "Right. I totally knew that. Shhhh." She laughed again. "Yeah. Yes. I'd like that. The dress Aunt Amy got me is probably a little too much, but I'll find something."

She nudged Olive's foot with her own and smiled at him fondly. "Thanks."

Oliver relaxed a little as she laughed, and he leaned over to wipe a little of Bailey's drool with his own napkin. "No need to thank me. Or at least not until we've gone. But yeah- let me know when your next night off is and we'll plan to do something all fancy and adult-like."

Smiling, Norah picked at a bit of fruit, her mind already moving forward to what she could possibly wear. She was, sometimes, very girly when it came to matters of clothes. "I'm off tonight and tomorrow. After that, I think I have Saturday and Sunday off, then I work for nine days." She sighed and took a bite of her fruit. "The things we do for our dreams." There was no hint of bitterness in her tone, though, only contentment.

"Why don't we aim for Saturday, then? I'll make reservations, and that'll give me time to get a sitter for Bailey here." He smiled as she spoke and nodded. "I know what you mean. Once training starts up, I'm a little nervous for what I'll have to do- I hate to leave her with a babysitter for too long, but..well, I'll cross that bridge when I get there, I suppose. But yes! You and me, we'll go have a grand old time together, aye?"

"Aye," she replied, doing a very good imitation of his accent and laughing when she spoke. "I'll help on days I can. She can nap when I do," Norah grinned, batting her eyes at Oliver.

She took another bite of fruit. "And I'm thanking you now, because I might have so much to drink on Saturday, that I'll forget to thank you later." But not really. Norah wasn't one to lose that kind of control.

"Oh I couldn't ask that of you," Ollie started, laughing as she batted her eyes. "I mean. I appreciate it, but you've got your training and everything- I don't want you to feel like you have to or anything like that."

He smiled. "Mmm. I'll keep that in min. I hope you do let loose." He winked, playfully, and finished his plate. "Here, let me take her so you can eat."

"I know I don't have to, Ollie, but you're two of my favourite people, and I want to. Short of tying me to my own bed or warding me out of your home...or other things we won't discuss over food, there's very little that will stop me from lending a hand."

Norah handed Oliver his daughter and made herself not scarf down breakfast. She did let out a very involuntary, slightly naughty "mmm" at her first bite of French toast. She knew how to appreciate food, and he certainly knew how to cook. "When does training start," she asked once her mouth was empty.

"Games start on the 7th, so we've been doing twice a week practices. We start every day practices next week." Oliver smiled, snorting with laughter at her list. "Tying you to your bed? That's a mental picture. And we'd never ward you out of this house!"

Oliver smiled as Bailey snuggled up to him and he pressed a kiss to the top of her head. He reached for his wand, summoning some fruit he'd pureed for her earlier. He found a spoon, making to feed her a little, and he smiled at the sound Norah made, pleased that she enjoyed it. "Mum and Da offered to babysit, of course, but I feel bad asking them to watch her every day."

Norah thought about her schedule again. "Well. If you need me Sunday, I fully intend to sleep in your spare room after our night of debauchery Saturday." She winked at her friend and grinned.

She watched the smashed fruit that came in their direction as she raised another bite to her lips. She smiled as she chewed and watched Ollie feed his girl. Norah tapped his leg with her toe again. "Let them, and me, help you, Ollie. It's what we're here for. Just because you're a single parent who has to make a living, it does not mean you're alone. I'm too clingy for you to be alone."

"I'll keep that in mind. But you're completely welcome to stay Saturday night. I'll make sure the extra room's made up, and I'll check with my mum to see about Sunday with Bailey."

Ollie looked down to Bailey as she reached for the spoon, her fingers wrapping around his hand. He looked back to Norah as she tapped his leg, his cheeks flushing for a moment at her words. "I know, and I appreciate it. I just- I don't want you- or them- to feel like I'm taking advantage. I like having you around- and I don't wanna run you off, either."

"Impossible." She said it was such conviction she tapped the table a little hard with her hand, and her tea sloshed in its cup. She gave him an apologetic smile and cleaned up the mess. It felt like there was more being said with their conversation, that they were talking about more than just looking after Bailey, but Norah couldn't put her finger on that.

"We know you're not taking advantage of us, and you know that we'd never...well, I would never ask you for money for minding her. You feed me, so we're even."

Oliver's smile turned sheepish at her conviction. "I know. I know. And you know I'd pay if you wanted. But feeding you is easy enough- I don't mind that at all."

Bailey seemed to finish with her own food and she reached for her giraffe, which Ollie had set on the table. She immediately stuck it in her mouth to gnaw on. "Thank you again for the toy- I'm pretty sure she loves it already."
