The problem Evan had, one of them, anyway, was that he had no idea what to wear to Andrew's party. Andrew had assured him that it didn't really matter, but Evan couldn't see how that could possibly be true. In the time Evan had known Andrew, he'd gathered that Andrew really, truly enjoyed fancy dress parties. Which usually was fine. Andrew knew Evan didn't like dressing up and never asked Evan to. But this was different. This was Andrew's party and Evan wanted him to be happy. And yes, Andrew had told him that whether Evan did or did not wear a costume wasn't important, but Evan still felt like it was. Deciding on a costume, though, had proven incredibly difficult.
On Saturday, hours before the party, Evan still hadn't settled on a costume idea he deemed appropriate. But he had decided to play around with paints and see if he thought of something. That had been a terrible idea, Evan could now see in retrospect. The bathroom at the Panquake house that Evan had picked to attempt his costume in was the one with the biggest mirror. That bit was possibly the only thing that had worked for Evan so far. The ability to see himself. In a less fortunate string of events, Evan had attempted to open a red pot of paint, only for it to spill half across both him and the bathroom.
The bathroom was quickly starting to fill with the smell of body-paint, slightly more toxic than Evan thought was necessarily healthy, and he pulled the door open with a big whoosh to let some air in, only to be faced with Mary-Anne. "Oh, hi," Evan greeted before looking down at himself. He was wearing jeans and enough red paint that it looked like he'd been stabbed. Wherein taking his shirt off had been an excellent plan in the grand scheme of getting painted, right now he mostly just looked like a victim of a terrible disaster who'd lost half of his clothes to a very aggressive ocelot. "Did you know that ocelots must mate five to ten times a day during mating season because it's really hard to get a female ocelot pregnant?" It was true.
