Who: Max Davies and Siobhan Vaisey.
What: House-hunting!
Where: Various.
When: Saturday 22nd October.
Status: Ongoing.
Max was excited about looking for a house. He’d spent his spare moments during the week looking through newspapers and into estate agent’s windows and had made a list of all the places he’d like to see. Since this was the first time they were looking at houses together, it was quite a long list, because they hadn’t worked out what, exactly, they wanted. Max knew he wanted a house - as opposed to the flat he lived in now - and a garden. He also thought he’d like it to be close enough to a muggle area for their children to have neighbours, but he hadn’t run that past Siobhan yet.
Not wanting to overwhelm themselves on their first attempt, they’d decided to choose two places each to visit. It would get them talking about specifics, comparing what they’d gone for and give them a more specific set of ideas to go away and find more places to see. Max wasn’t expecting them to fall in love with a property right away. Since both of his choices were in the same county, they’d decided to start there. The estate agent had shown them around a six-bedroom house in Surrey and had retreated, leaving them in the master bedroom to have a chat. “So what did you think, honestly?” Max asked Siobhan. “The garden’s amazing, and I think I like the open plan area downstairs, but the actual kitchen section seemed small.”

Siobhan was just thrilled to finally be doing some house hunting. It felt like they'd been talking about it forever and yet were only just getting started. Max's first choice was really quite lovely and Siobhan didn't have many negative things to say about the place. As they stood there in the master bedroom, wandering around its expanse, Siobhan nodded at her fiance's words. "It's lovely," she told him. "I'm quite fond of the windows and the garden is gorgeous. I have to agree about the kitchen, though. I'd like more room there, but I hate to discount the rest of the good things for the kitchen alone."
Siobhan had little other reason for disliking the house. The visual aspects of it alone were quite lovely. Glancing over at Max, she gave him a little smile. "The bedroom is nice as well, don't you think?"
--
Max smiled, slipping an arm around Siobhan’s shoulders as they looked out at the garden. “This is only the first house, love,” he pointed out, smiling. “We’re not discounting it if we acknowledge things we don’t like about it - we’re just getting to know what we want, and preparing the way to find the perfect place.” He turned to examine the bedroom in response to her question, but continued to speak about the kitchen. “Space is harder to fix than if the kitchen were old or ugly,” he pointed out. “We could fix those, even if we didn’t do it right away. But unless we’re willing to sacrifice garden space, we can’t easily make the kitchen bigger.”
Max knew what he wanted - as he usually did - but he wasn’t as clear on what Siobhan wanted, and he was eager to find out so he could pick more places to see next time that they’d both like. “The bedroom’s a good size,” he agreed. “I don’t really know what else to look for. What about you? I’d definitely paint the walls if we moved in. Who decided bright white was a good colour for anything?”
--
Siobhan knew that he was right. It was only the first house. There were still several more today and perhaps several more after that. There was no shortage of houses to look at and until they found the perfect one, they could keep right on looking. She nodded at his words. Space was a bigger issue than others. Redecorating or remodeling could be done for things that weren't up to par visually. Space would be a much more difficult issue to adjust.
"I think we'd definitely have to paint," she agreed, scrunching her nose as she glanced at the walls. "I'd like something decently sized," she added. "With a nice bathroom. A spacious bathroom. Big garden and big kitchen would be a plus so I'm thinking this one is probably out of the running for kitchen alone," she sighed. "But, there are other houses to look at, like you said."
--
“Big bathroom, big garden, big kitchen,” Max recited, reaching down to the briefcase at his feet and pulling out some muggle-appropriate paper and a pen to write down those particulars. They might seem obvious, but Max liked to be careful and he fully intended to draw up a list against which they could check all future houses they might look at. “Guest room with a bathroom nearby,” he added, writing it down.
“How many bedrooms do we need?” he asked. He hadn’t been quite sure, when he’d picked out this house to view. “One for us, one for guests.” He looked at her seriously. “Two for children?” Not that Max necessarily only wanted two, but if they had a bedroom for each gender then brothers or sisters could share, at least until they made other arrangements. “So that’s four. I’d like a study.”
--
"Yes," she agreed. The guestroom definitely needed a bathroom nearby. As for the question about rooms and his response made her smile. She wasn't worried about the number of children that either of them wanted so long as they wanted them. Hearing him talk about bedrooms for their children sent a warmth through her that she couldn't quite hide as it radiated out through her smile.
"At least two for children," she agreed. "A study for you. I would love to have a dance space, but that could always be an addition later on," she shrugged. "What do you think?"
