I'm bringing in a Tom - different from what you were thinking above. Didn't realize someone else was looking to hold him, whoops. Anyway, he's a bit of a Russian thug, a regular who has his hand in the business bringing foreign girls for spots here - basically, he's involved in human trafficking and loans girls out to a few spots like this. Realize that your char wouldn't be involved with that, but she could know of him/his reptuation, some kind of thing like that if it interests you.

it's all good, those were just some ideas that i had if people wanted a jumping off point. val is a tabloid star and subsequent feature dancer, but she definitely has ties to folks with criminal backgrounds - especially within the last three-ish years that she's started feature dancing. this is set in her hometown, so if he's been here a while i'm sure she knows of him, at the very least.
