It isn't that Miller's Fall is a bad place to live. It's one of those tiny towns where everyone knows everyone, but of course it has its own secrets. For Miller's Fall, it's the Claiming. See, when the town's elders decide an alpha is "worthy," he (and it's always a he, for some reason) is given an omega in the first blush of heat, and the two mate in a ritual called the Claiming. Afterwards, the alpha comes to prominence within the town, but his omega is rarely seen in public again unless the alpha dies. That's just how things are done.
