WHO: Jack Sloper and Ben Channing
WHEN: Monday, November 19, 1998. Noon
WHERE: DMLE
WHAT: First day of hit wizard training doesn't go so well.
RATING: PG-13 for violence and homophobia
Jack ducked down dodging a fist. He stepped in close and fast landing a particularly well placed jab to his assailant’s face. Well this escalated quickly. So much for no one having seen that failed ward. It really had been a fluke that this particular bloke, Andrew Ridgewell, had seen it. Jack had vaguely remembered the other boy, he’d been two years ahead in Slytherin, and from the start of the day he’d taken an extreme dislike to Jack.
Andy was big and slow and not that bright. So it was no surprise when Jack had outshined him all morning. They had gotten paired up being close alphabetically, to disastrous consequences. Jack was better at charms, he was better at transfigurations, he was even better at potions. He had disarmed, or otherwise defeated Andy through every practice duel. This only enraged the behemoth. By the time they took break for lunch Andy was in the mood to pick a fight. It had started with the harsh words of “candy assed fudge packer,” and when Jack had pointed out how cleverly unoriginal an insult that was the bigger boy threw a punch.
Andy stepped back recoiling from Jack’s blow with blood streaming out of his nose. The other trainees were yelling and placing bets. Andy shook it off and came back at Jack again. This time he didn’t miss, his fist landed just where he’d intended and Jack knew he’d have a black eye. The bigger boy may have been slow but he hit like a hammer. Jack had a moment to recover before Andy was charging him again. Jack used his momentum to his advantage. He delivered another punch that bloodied his own knuckles and tripped Andy bringing him down hard to the ground. He struggled to get up but failed, and that was when the real trouble started. Two of his friends stepped up their wands pointed menacingly at Jack.
“Oi! What’s all this fuss?” Benjamin pushed through the trainees. He looked from the boy on the ground, to the blond kid with the purpling eye, to the two with their wands pointed at him. It was easy to what was happening, but why? Standing next to the kid, he crossed his arms, wand clasped in his fist, looking to the two with their wands pointed. “Do you mind tellin’ me what’s goin’ on here?”
Jack shook his hand he realized that he had broken it, again. He never even went for his wand. He stood firm and stared at the other two boys giving them hard unafraid eyes, almost daring them to start something. Andy groaned from the floor. The two looked at Jack, then Ben, then Andy. They lowered their wands, “Just a bit o’ fun.” One said. “Yeah we didn’t mean nothin’ by it.” Said the other. “Andy was just messin’ ‘round.” Commented the first.
Ben looked at Jack then nodded, looking to the ground as if thinking. “Right so,” he glanced from one boy to the other. “You think this is funny? That this is a joke, eh? Fightin’ amongst yourselves?” He stepped closer, pointing accusingly. Standing straight, he addressed the group.
“Our first job is to each other. How the bloody Hell are we supposed to depend on you wankers if you can’t even cooperate? Lettin’ one of your own get beat...” he paused, looking at Jack, raising an eyebrow, and chuckling. It was obvious the kid was holding his own, until wands were pulled anyway. “Well, let me tell ya, there ain’t room for you here.”
Jack dropped his gaze to the floor. He looked at Andy who had just spat out a tooth and rolled over on his back. Jack held a hand out to the other boy trying to help him up. Andy glared but took Jack’s hand. Then he smiled wickedly then and pulled Jack down to the floor completely ignoring what had just been said. Jack was taken by surprise and hit the ground hard. It stunned him and then Andy was on him again delivering a crushing blow to his ribs.
“Merlin, you stupid fuck!” Ben cursed. With surprising strength, Ben pushed the larger boy to the ground, causing him to slide a few feet. In what seemed like a moment, the hit wizard was kneeling over the trainee with his shirt clenched in his fists. He pulled the boy forward so he could hear every word. “I know you may think you’re top notch, but around here, you are nothing, understand? Nothing without the trust and respect of your team. All your team. Your personal insecurities need to be left at the door or you can leave with them.” With a shove, Ben dropped the trainee to the ground and stood, eyes burning. After watching him a moment, he turned to Jack and knelt by him, offering a hand.
“You alright?”
“Yeah,” Jack grunted as he sat up. He gritted his teeth and let Ben lend him a hand. He wrapped an arm around his ribs as he got to his feet, then seemed to think better of it and stood up straight ignoring the pain. He knew one of his ribs was cracked. “Some first day.” He said shaking his head. “Somehow not what I imagined.” He laughed a bit and winced as the pain from his ribs shot through him.
“Mmm,” Ben eyed the boy carefully, taking note of how he handled himself. “Can’t imagine what you did to make ‘im mad.” He glanced over his shoulder as the two boys who were pointing their wands were helping the larger boy to his feet. Ben smirked. The rest of the crowd had thankfully dispersed.
“What’s your name, mate?”
Jack held out his hand to shake Ben’s “I’m Jack Sloper. And as for what set him off, well some men can’t handle being outclassed by a queer.” His eyes were dark when he said that almost daring Ben to make a comment about it.
“Ben Channing,” he replied, taking Jack’s hand. The dark look in the boy’s eyes made him smirk as he released his hand. “In that case, I would hardly call them ‘men.’” He paused. “Have you eaten yet?”
“Good answer.” Jack grinned. “And no, not yet. I was about to when my new friend wanted to have a discussion.”
“Me and a couple of the others are going to this cafe around the corner. You’re welcome to join-” Ben stopped as one of the hit wizards came rushing toward him.
Jack was about to accept the invitation when they were interrupted.
“Channing, We’ve got a signal. There’s been an attack at Lynn’s. We’ve got to go now.”
It took a moment for Ben to register what was said before his eyes went wide and he turned to leave. “Sorry, Scrapper, emergency. Some other time, alright?” Without waiting for a response he ran off with the other hit wizard.
Jack briefly wondered what was up, but as Ben ran off the pain from his ribs and hand washed over him and he decided that lunch was in order before training resumed.
