Re: 5. Outside the police station with Jennifer and Ben. Justin’s insecurity here seems very different from his earlier encounters with Craig. Do you think he really believes that he might have had something to do with the divorce? Or is it more that he just needs to hear from his mother what he already knows in his heart is the truth?
I think knowing something in your head is different from knowing it in your heart. Justin knows on a logical level that of course he didn't break up his parents' marriage, but I think many divorced kids believe on some deep-down level that they're to blame somehow.
Also, Justin was strong with Craig because he needed to be in the face of that sort of hatred. With his mom, someone he trusts, he can let down a little and acknowledge his need for reassurance and love.
A major theme in 508 is fathers and sons. ... And we also have mention of Brian’s father during the scene with Ted in his office, where we are reminded that Brian’s relationship with his own father went a long way towards shaping him into the fucked up man he is now.
Excellent point re: fathers and sons. (Also, thank god for that scene with Ted, because it really helps remind me that I do love Brian, even when he's being a total idiot as he is for the rest of this episode. But that's another topic!)
Given what Justin has faced in this episode with his father, do you think that he’s done with him for good? Do you see Justin ever trying to re-forge a relationship with his dad again?
For Justin's sake, I hope he doesn't. I think at this point his dad would have to come to him, and Justin might eventually be receptive if Craig were sincere, but we all can imagine how likely that scenario is.
On an unrelated note, I really liked the Drew/Emmett storyline of this episode. Emmett's little scream when Drew approaches him in the beginning is hilarious (well, at least on the second or third viewing when you know he's not in any danger). And the way Emmett gently urges Drew to be true to himself is really lovely. *squees quietly over their last scene*
