“Do you hate me now?”
“Of course not,” Mel said gently. “I’m upset that you got suspended for fighting, though. Are you ready to tell me what happened?”
“No… Yes,” he countered bravely. “David said I wasn’t Jewish and I’m not allowed to celebrate Christmas and Hanukkah. He said I’m a selfish assh— uh, brat that just wanted all those presents.”
“So you punched him?”
“Well, um,” Gus stammered in a small voice, “he might be right.”
“Ah,” Melanie answered sagely. “How about we make some cocoa and talk about it?”
“And you still love me?”
