“Justin, honey, I’m proud of you,” Jennifer gushed as she wrapped more leftovers. “The dinner was perfect, the house looks amazing, you somehow got Brian to remain sober…”
“I owe him lots of— never mind.”
Ignoring the obvious, Jenn delved into her real concerns. “So how come you’re acting like your goldfish died?”
“Is it always like this?” he questioned sadly. “The letdown?”
“I don’t understand.”
“I planned for weeks, cooked for days, made unholy pacts with Brian, and in three hours it’s over?”
“Pretty much,” she answered honestly.
“And now I have to divvy out leftovers? This really sucks!” |

Justin came downstairs to Debbie’s crowded kitchen, disappointed that Brian hadn’t taken the hint and followed him up to his bedroom.
“Where’s Brian?” he asked, looking around curiously, feeling uneasy as glances knowingly passed back and forth.
“Sit down and have some pumpkin pie, honey.” Deb said finally, avoiding his gaze.
“Is he outside smoking?” He headed for the door, but Deb shook her head sadly.
“Sunshine, he had to leave.”
“Without me?”
“He always has dessert with his family, sweetie.” Lindsay answered, gently.
Deb patted his cheek, placing pie before him. “Later tonight, I’ll tell you a Holiday story.” |

“Good-bye, Son.” Brian leaned into the car window to kiss Gus gently on the forehead, his action almost identical to the day Mel and Lindsay had permanently moved their small family to Toronto.
He stepped back as the car pulled out of the driveway, fingers already searching his jacket for his smokes.
“The Thanksgiving Holiday is too short.” Michael observed sadly as the car drove out of sight.
Ben hugged his husband wordlessly in answer.
Brian grunted, blowing out a cloud of smoke, before turning away.
Justin grabbed his hand and interlaced their fingers, happy he was home to stay. |

“When you told me to get my ass down to Kinnetik, I thought it was for hot office sex not because the fucking art department ate bad shrimp and didn’t finish the boards.”
“Stop complaining. Diva Pets will be here in,” Brian made a show of looking at his watch “fifty-six minutes. Are you done?”
Justin held the completed board up.
Brian eyed it critically. “Not bad. How long will it take to make the font bolder and offset the graphic?”
“Ten minutes.”
“That leaves forty-six minutes for your reward.” |
