| Daphne!fic - any pointers? |

I've signed up to write a Daphne story for Chromaticvision.
I'm stressed!
FIRST PROBLEM:
Although I think I can manage a Daphne voice, I can't remember details about her life. I don't have time to fine-tooth-comb the entire series. I've seen her place, her car, that's about it. In fact I remember more about her from fics than from the show - in fact that's another worry, thinking I've got canon knowledge of her when it's actually based on fanfic!
Can anyone point me to particular eps to watch - or better yet, has anyone kept a record of info about Daphne? Or is there a Daphne expert who wouldn't mind being Brains Trust?
SECOND PROBLEM:
As well as being ignorant of facts about her life, I'm also ignorant about her cultural background and what it might mean. I'm not African American and am only exposed to African American cultures in a tertiary way (For what it's worth I'm a half Indian, half Anglo-European, Australian). I'm worried about writing what I have no clue about and either making it invisible or getting it terribly wrong. As far as writing comfort, I'd feel better positioning her more according to her age, gender and education - all things I can pretty much conceptualise. But doesn't that (writing a coloured character as though they were raceless) defeat the purpose of Chromaticvision?
Please throw your thoughts (regarding both parts of my problem) my way. ^__^
ETA: I'm not asking about getting a beta to check my story; that's a given. I'm more trying to set up the right framework before I begin. |
