A few days ago I was complaining on my LJ about a trend in fan fiction that has been irritating me, and Xie suggested I open the topic to discussion here.

I've read many beautiful stories and a handful- an embarrassingly large handful- of bad!fic over the two years since I found this fandom. But recently I have discovered something that is, at least for me, a new phenomenon. Well written stories that completely miss the boat when it comes to characterization.

I've found that these stories are written by people who know how to use punctuation and a thesaurus and are capable of weaving intricate and well thought out plots. Everything you would think it takes to write a good story, only problem is Brian isn't Brian and Justin isn't Justin.

Is it wrong to expect more from these writers than the typical bad!fic writers? Is it possible that these writers really just see the characters that differently than I do? Is it wrong that I don't feel like I can be flexible when it comes to certain definable character traits? Why is it that these authors don't simply write original fiction?

ETA: I completely forgot to ask if this is really something new. I have only noticed it in the past few months. Has it always been around and I have just been missing it?
