For the last few days, I've been reading a lot of BDSM fanfic. I think it started with [info]triciaqaf's stuff (which I love), but I'm not sure. Anyway, today I read a series by a woman who writes very well. Her Brian and Justin get into some pretty heavy stuff in the first series I read (set around 215) including Brian drawing blood and leaving Justin badly bruised. But it's done well and, in some respects, doesn't seem OTT. It made me wonder. What do you think?

Is the idea that Justin enjoys BDSM (other than the fact that it's a turn on) because it makes him feel possessed, and, thus, loved by Brian even to the point of wanting to be marked by him and refusing to use his safeword so that he can prove his love--is that idea one you can defend in canon, or is the whole concept fanon? I've read it so often, it makes me wonder.

Would Brian ever harm Justin as this woman suggested? In her story, it has a lot to do with his feelings about where the relationship is going and how he acts out on those feelings. Yes, they're fucking when this is happening, but it isn't simply about having fun--it subtexted. I don't remember if she talks about Brian's abusive childhood or not, but some stories do. Again, is that an idea you can defend in canon or is it pure fantasy? I always had the notion that Brian would never hurt Justin ... at least not physically. But I wonder if there are some instances in which that would not be true.

And before you ask, I know Justin isn't a delicate little flower. He can defend himself. But I think it is true in canon that his biggest vulnerability is his love for Brian, and that is what's inevitably used in these fics. He wants to explore with Brian, to learn, to draw closer, and he trusts Brian. Brian, on the other hand, is certainly a "dark" character, with hidden recesses and secrets, which makes a fic like the one I just mentioned seem plausible.
