This first chart matches the characters so that the only difference between their types is whether they are hopeful or cynical. Brian and Ben are both AT's. They are both openly proud Tops. In the moments when Brian is feeling more positive hopeful, he can be very romantic and noble. When Ben is more negative and cynical, he can be an unbearable asshole. Justin and Emmett are both AB's. They are out and proud bottoms. They are both very artistic. Emmett throws splashy parties and Justin makes angry paintings with splashes of paint. Emmett is both Fetch Dixon and Queer Guy. Justin is the King of Babylon and a go-go boy. Ted and Drew are both ST's. They are Tops who are less comfortable with themselves. Both men are some of the least artistic of the characters. Both men are in the most stereotypically male professions: accountant and football player. Michael and Blake are both SB's. They are insecure bottoms. I have more trouble pointing out their similarities and differences, but that may just be because we don't see a lot of Blake. |
This next chart matches the characters so that the only differences between their types are whether they are self-assured or self-conscious. Brian and Ted are both CT's. When they are strong, they are both very successful businessmen; when they are weak, they self-medicate. For much of the series, when one is weaker, the other is stronger. When Ted is at his weakest at the end of season 3, Brian is at one of this strongest points in the story. As Ted becomes stronger during season 4, we see Brian become weaker with the Cancer. Justin and Blake are both CB's. Their stories also have parallels that explore strength and weakness and insecurity and security. Both are hospitalized at the end of season 1. In season 2 Justin sometimes behaves in ways that are similar to Blake in season 1; he is clingy and dependent and he uses more drugs than normal. In season 4, they both deal with unfinished business and confront their demons. Justin faces Chris Hobbs; Blake must face Ted and seek forgiveness for how he behaved in season 1. Neither of them, though, resolves these issues in the healthiest of ways. I don't have a lot to say about Ben and Drew except that they are probably each the most "straight-acting" on the show. And they look a lot alike. The similarities between Michael and Emmett are not totally obvious at first glance. Emmett is much more flamboyant than Michael is. On the other hand, Michael's mother is Debbie and his father is Divina Devore, and he dresses in drag for the pride march, so he definitely has the queen in him. |
In this table I matched the characters by their polar opposites, meaning that that their types are different for each axis. What I find fascinating is that Michael is Brian's polar opposite and Emmett is Ted's, for those are the two most intense friendships. It makes me wonder what kind of friendships there might be between Blake and Ben or Drew and Justin. |
