Lately, Jason hadn’t been doing much of anything. He came home from work and relaxed in his apartment, playing with his new puppy, and then going to sleep. Ever since his run-in with Kate, Jason’s mind had been working almost non-stop, thinking of things he should have said, things he should have done. He couldn’t stop thinking about her, and that bothered him. He hadn’t seen or heard from Kate since she broke up with him back in November, and now she was working with his new girlfriend. Jason wasn’t stupid, he knew that she had to be in Providence. She went to school there, of course she lived there. But he didn’t think that he would have run into her that soon. He thought he’d had more time to prepare, and was just taken a little bit off guard.

Jason was relaxing one night when he heard his phone go off, signaling that he had a new text message. Glancing down to where it lay on the coffee table, Jason leaned forward on his couch to grab it, picking it up. He couldn’t help but smile when he saw that it was Kate, and he texted her back. A little while later, he had suggested that she just call him, because he couldn’t decipher her drunk messages anymore. Leaning back against his couch again, Jason lifted his remote and flipped through channels, stopping when he saw that a Family Guy rerun was on the Cartoon Network. Hearing his phone going off again, Jason glanced down and smiled, picking it up and answering it. “Hey, you lush,” he teased, leaning his head against the back of his couch.

Kate leaned back more in the bathtub getting more comfortable and was pretty sure that her pants and entire backside was probably getting a little bit wet from the dampness on the inside of her bath tub, but right now she really didn’t care. It was just water so it would dry, and right now Kate was pretty comfortable where she was, even though she didn’t have a logical explanation for why she was even in the bath tub in the first place. “Oh yeah, because I obviously get drunk like every three days,” Kate sarcastically teased back. Jason knew that Kate didn’t drink a lot, and even though they had not seen each other in about a year she hadn’t changed too much in that department. She drank a little more while living on residence at Brown, but considering she was in university she didn’t party as much as people would think she would.

Hearing about Jason’s dog put a smile to her face because she helped name him, and Kate thought that was pretty cute. Kate had never really had a pet of her own, her mom never got a dog or a cat and in a way Kate really wanted one but she wasn’t allowed them in residence. Plus, Kate was so busy with school that she wasn’t sure if she would have the time for a dog right now. “It is just the two of us, I don’t know what Jamie is doing tonight,” Kate answered. “Though right now Kaycee is in my room and I am chilling in the bath tub. I think I hear someone else in the room with her, but I don’t remember inviting anyone else over…” Kate then listened for a second to what might be going on in her room with Kaycee but she just shrugged it off and decided that she was too lazy to move. “Oh well, Kaycee was telling me about how horny she was, maybe she called someone. Man, if she has sex on my bed she better wash the sheets.” Kate knew that she was blabbering but that was what she did when she drank sometimes and she was sure that Jason wouldn’t care. “Anyways, besides getting a photography job, moving here and scoring a hot girlfriend, what else have you been doing?” Kate asked as casually as possible. It had been so long since the two of them had just sat down and talked Kate was pretty sure she must of missed some stuff that went on in Jason’s life. Kate normally wouldn’t bring up Nicole in their conversation because she knew that she was jealous of her, but she was a little intoxicated and didn’t think before she spoke.

Jason smiled, raising a brow into the air. “Hey, I don’t know how often you get drunk, so I can’t really put a number on how many days. But I do know that when you do drink, you go all out. You don’t do anything halfway when it comes to getting drunk. I do remember that,” he smiled, the memories invading his brain. Jason and Kate didn’t do a lot of drinking when they were on the island together, but they did do a bit. And whenever they did, Jason would have to help Kate back to her room, because she was pretty drunk. Jason had gotten pretty drunk, too, but apparently he could hold his liquor better. He was well-aware of the smile that crossed his face when Kate told him that she didn’t know where her boyfriend was that night, but that he wasn’t with her, and he almost hated himself for it. He had no reason to be glad that Jamie wasn’t anywhere near Kate. They were dating, Jamie had that right. Even though Jason didn’t want him anywhere near Kate. But, Jason wasn’t anything to Kate, other than maybe a friend. He didn’t have the right to want to keep Jamie away from her, it just wasn’t right. He needed to get himself under control before he did something stupid, that he’d end up regretting.

Unable to help himself, Jason laughed when he heard that Kate was in the bathtub. “You’re laying in the bathtub?” he asked, shaking his head. He could just picture Kate laying there, absolutely minding her own business. “How is that working out for you, are you getting wet?” he asked, snickering. “Or, are you actually taking a bath? Because that might make more sense. Though, I haven’t ever really known you to actually make sense, in all the time I have known you,” he snickered a little bit, shaking his head. “What have I been doing?” he asked, then scratched his face as he tried to think. “Um, not much of anything, really. I moved out here a few months ago, and have still been just trying to get settled in. I’m still learning my way around the city, I get lost a lot,” he laughed. He paused for a moment, and rolled his lips into his mouth. “Marcus still talks about you, you know. He really liked you,” Jason chuckled a little bit. Marcus did more than talk about Kate, Marcus constantly hounded Jason about trying to win Kate back. But Jason knew that Kate was happy, and he didn’t want to infringe on that happiness at all.

A smile came to Kate’s lips when Jason mentioned him remembering what Kate was like when she drank. She had gotten drunk with Jason a few times on the island and he obviously could hold his liquor better then she could. Most nights ended up with Jason helping Kate back to her room and then her pulling him in and telling him to take his pants off. As annoying as Kate might get when she got a little drunk, she was pretty sure some nights ended with her head in the toilet, she knew that Jason never complained. “Yeah, go hard or go home is my motto,” Kate chimed. She was then tempted to bring up a few random stories from when they were drinking on the island, but they usually ended with Kate and Jason at least fooling around in the end and Kate new it would be too awkward for them to talk about that, no matter how drunk Kate might be at the moment. Instead she left it at that and straightened her legs out so that her feet were resting on top of the sides of the bath tub.

“I wouldn’t call you while I was taking a bath!” Kate said with a laugh, though when she thought about it she probably would. Actually, Kate was pretty sure that she had talked to Jason on the phone while she was in the bath tub before, but that was when they were dating long distance. Kate then grinned knowing that Jason was right, she didn’t make sense a lot of the time but Kate didn’t really care. Jamie thought she was a little crazy, but he liked her anyway so it didn’t matter. “My back is a little wet, but it is not too bad and surprisingly very comfortable,” Kate went on, adjusting her towel made pillow. Kate then grinned when Jason said that he gets lots and she really couldn’t blame him. “I got lost a lot when I first moved here, but I found it helped me learn were everything was a lot quicker.” Kate paused as well when Jason brought up Marcus and she couldn’t help but smile. Kate had really liked Jason’s older brother and got along with him really well. She wondered if Jason had told Marcus that the two of them had run into each other yet. “Tell Marcus I said hi. I miss him,” Kate said a little more quietly. She also wanted to tell Jason that she had missed him, too but knew that she shouldn’t tread those waters when she had alcohol in her.

Jason never thought that Kate was annoying when she got drunk, he always thought she was pretty hilarious. The good thing about being in such a great relationship with her back when had been that he never felt like he was taking advantage of her when they slept together while she was drunk, because more than likely, they would have slept together had they both been sober. So it was all good, and Jason never minded it. Snickering, Jason nodded. “I know that’s your motto. Glad to see that hasn’t changed,” he told her, his hand playing with the t-shirt he was wearing. The memories were all coming back to him now, and he rolled his lips into his mouth, trying to push them out of his mind for now.

Smiling at her laugh, Jason snickered a little bit. “It’s good to hear you laugh,” he told her honestly, since the last time he had talked to her (before their random meeting in that warehouse) Kate had been crying. And that just broke Jason’s heart, he had to hear her upset and crying in his head for a few months before he was able to focus on anything else. “Well then, I’m glad that you’re comfortable, even if you’re a little wet,” he told her, shaking his head and laughing again softly. Closing his eyes as she told him to say hi to his brother for her, Jason rolled his lips into his mouth again. “I’ll definitely do that. He’ll be really glad to hear that you’re doing well,” he told her, clearing his throat a little bit. Jason couldn’t help but wish things were different. He wished that he wasn’t involved with someone, and that she wasn’t either. Then maybe things could go back to where they had left. Clearing his throat again, Jason smiled. “So, you’re studying photography?” he asked, unable to keep the smile out of his voice. He was kind of touched that she was studying that.

Kate grinned while she laid in the tub talking to Jason, turning her body slightly to the side to get more comfortable. Jason knew Kate very well, they dated for about a year and were pretty much inseparable during that time so he probably knew her best out of anyone right now. It had been another year since Kate and broken up with Jason, and although people changed a lot during that amount of time Kate felt like Jason was pretty much the same since they had parted, and she knew that she hadn’t changed that much either. Well, she was pretty sure that she had not changed that much. “Oh, that motto is sticking for sure,” Kate said. More memories came to Kate as she laid there and she did her best to ignore them because whenever she let them cloud her thoughts too much she felt a pain in her stomach that she couldn’t ignore.

After running a hand through her hair and switching what ear she had her phone against Kate couldn’t help but laugh softly again. “Oh yeah? Well, it is good to just talk to you,” Kate said quickly not really realizing what had come out until after she said it. Kate really had missed their long phone calls and talks that the two of them used to have, she went months without saying a word to Jason and now all of a sudden she could call or text message him all she wanted. “Yeah, I am,” Kate said with a smile on her face. “I took visual arts last year and then decided to take photography. I love it.” Both Kate and Jason knew that he was the reason why she got into photography. Kate had never been interested in it until she met Jason. He taught her a lot about it when they were on the island together and her interest in it just grew. Though, now whenever Kate was in a dark room she couldn’t help but think of Jason.

Smiling, Jason nodded. "I'm glad to hear that you're not going to change your motto," he told her, his hand flattening on his chest and just resting there now. His eyes traced the patterns on the ceiling to attempt to keep his mind from wandering, since it wandered quite frequently while he was on the phone with her. Especially now that it had been so long since he'd really seen her. He was going to just forget about the little blow-up at the warehouse ... that didn't count. They'd seen each other for fifteen minutes tops, and had argued the entire time they were there. So Jason didn't count it as the last time he'd seen her.

Jason's smile grew when Kate told him it was good to talk to him, and he nodded. "Yeah, it's good to talk to you too. I ... I missed talking to you," he admitted, closing his eyes and rolling his lips into his mouth. He didn't want to make anything awkward, but he was just telling the truth. He had missed talking to Kate. He had missed everything about her. Jason listened as Kate talked about photography and how she loved it, and he smiled, running a hand over his face slowly. "I'm glad you love it," he told her honestly, smiling. He, too, couldn't enter a darkroom without memories of things he and Kate used to do in there, and how many times they had attempted sex in that room. Clearing his throat, Jason smiled at the phone and sighed. "I just missed you, Kate," he said, instantly regretting that he let those words slip out of his mouth.

Kate started to get uncomfortable in her position in the tub again, her butt was getting sore where it was so she shifted again to a different side and moved her towel pillow behind her again. She tried to remember why she decided to sit in the bath tub in the first place but couldn’t remember and just shrugged it off. Kate was too lazy to move to get out of the tub, and she didn’t want to leave her bathroom until she knew it was safe to leave and not see what Kaycee was doing in the room beside her. “Yeah, there are a lot of things that have not changed,” Kate then said, not really sure why she said it exactly. It was true though, besides being ten times more stressed then when she was on the island, Kate hadn’t changed much at all.

“I missed talking to you too,” Kate admitted, having to take a deep breath in and look at her ceiling as well. Part of her wanted to tell Jason exactly how much she missed him, how while he was gone it hurt her to even think about him. Just ask Kate’s room mate, she was the one who had to listen to her cry all of the time right after Kate arrived at Brown, and after Kate broke things off with him. She did her best to push those thoughts out of her head, feeling like she might tear up again from just thinking about it. “I do. I was so afraid I wasn’t going to find something at school that I would like, but I just feel in love with photography.” Kate then started to play with the hem of her shirt for a moment, and went quite when Jason told her that he missed her. She was silent for a few seconds before speaking again. “I missed you too, Jason. A lot.”

Jason smiled when Kate told her that a lot of things hadn’t changed, and he nodded his head. “That’s good to know too. It’s good to know you’re the same person that I lo--, er, was friends with before,” he said. Jason almost smacked himself in the face for almost slipping there, that was just stupid. Well, at least he caught himself before he got the word out, right? And maybe Kate didn’t notice that. She was drunk, after all … right? He hoped so, at least. He wanted to try and be friends with Kate, he had missed her. And freaking her out by bringing up the fact that he was fairly certain he still had some feelings for her … well, that wasn’t the best idea in the world.

His smile grew as she told him that she fell in love with photography, and he nodded his head. “Photography’s really easy to fall in love with,” he told her, his hand resting on his stomach and his fingers drumming on it. “I mean, come on. I hadn’t even thought about photography before my brother suggested it to me and bought me my first camera,” he reminded her, switching the phone from one ear to the other. “And I think it’s great that you found something you love to do,” he added, nodding. “It just makes me even happier that it’s photography. Buuut, I’m kind of biased when it comes to photography, as you very well know,” he laughed, shrugging. Rolling his lips into his mouth after he told her he missed her, the silence kind of worried him for a sec. Did he freak her out? Great. And then Kate told him she missed him too. Closing his eyes, Jason swallowed. Hearing that she missed him made his heart beat a little faster. Which was not a good thing. “We should … I don’t know. Do something. Get coffee or something,” he suggested.

It was a good thing that Kate was still pretty drunk while she was talking to Jason because if she hear his minor slip up it probably would of made things extremely awkward between the two of them. There was no denying that Kate still had feelings for Jason, he was her first love after all and her first serious boyfriend and relationship that lasted longer then a few months after all, but she was in denial over exactly how strong of feelings she did have for him. Kate was in a relationship with Jamie right now, they had been together for a decent amount of time and she didn’t want to mess any of that up right now. He was great, good to her and she was doing her best to use that as an excuse as to why she ignored the feelings she got in her stomach whenever she thought of Jason and how much she missed him. They were broken up, he had a girlfriend, they were done.

‘Well, I had not thought of it until you got me into it,” Kat pointed out with a smile. She still remembered when he first let her play with his camera and how paranoid she was of dropping it or breaking it. He always let her play around and take random pictures which was the first thing that really did get her interested in it. It wasn’t long before Kate bought a simple camera of her own and started learning from Jason. Kate was actually surprised by how much Jason had taught her during their time together and it actually really helped her out in her classes. “I am glad too, because if it wasn’t photography I am pretty sure I would still have an undeclared major or something lame like that right now,” Kate said with a bit of a laugh. She then bit down on her lip as she sat in the tub and wasn’t sure if telling Jason that she missed him was a good or bad thing. Would that make things awkward? “We should,” Kate found herself answering without even thinking about it. All she really wanted to do was see Jason again without his stupid girlfriend there. Wait, did she just call Nicole stupid? Didn’t Kate like Nicole? “Coffee sounds good, school made me dependant on the stuff.”

Jason couldn’t deny the fact that he still had feelings for Kate, either. She was his first real love, and she had been such a big part of his life. He couldn’t help but harbor some feelings for her. Feelings that had pretty much stayed dormant, until he saw her again. And then they just hit him full-force. He knew he wasn’t going to act on anything, Jason wasn’t the type of guy to cheat on anyone Maybe that was because he had been cheated on a few times in the past, and he knew that being cheated on felt horrible, it made you feel like you were worthless. Jason didn’t want to cause anybody to feel that way. Ever. And he really cared about Nic … he really did.

Smiling at the memory of getting Kate into photography, Jason nodded. “Yeah, it’s apparently just something that happens when you spend a lot of time with a photographer. You tend to become somewhat interested in it,” he smiled. Well, that was the case with Kate anyway. Nic didn’t really seem to be interested in photography much. Jason remembered how much Kate loved being with him in the dark room. That might have had something to do with the fact that they couldn’t be alone in the dark room for more than five minutes before his project was completely forgotten, but with Nic … she didn’t like to be in the dark room at all. She said the chemicals smelled funny, and that she didn’t want the smell to seep into her clothes. She didn’t even like to hug or kiss him after he’d spent time in the dark room. Smiling as Kate accepted his invitation for coffee, Jason nodded. “Definitely. I’m free any night during the week after about 6pm, and I’m usually free all weekend. Unless I have a project,” he told her, sitting up and running his fingers through his hair.

What Jason said was true, when the two of them were together they spent a ridiculous amount of time together, so it was only natural that she would want to learn more about something that Jason loved so much. He talked about photography so much, and the two of them were in the dark room so much so Kate started learning about photography before she even really realized it. The first day that they had met and talked Jason showed Kate how to develop film, and the memory of that made Kate smile. There were a lot of memories that Kate had of her time with Jason that made her smile, though if she thought about them too much and about how happy she was that year it also made her heart ache.

“Apparently,” Kate teased back. She then thought about what kind of stuff she was going to have to do during the next week or two and when the two of them could meet up. Kate knew that she was very busy with her exams coming up but she knew that she would make time to see Jason no matter what. She had not just sat and talked to him in person in so long and really it was all that she wanted to do right now. Everyone would want to catch up with someone they had not seen in a year, right? Well, that is what Kate told herself to justify how she was feeling. “I usually have my classes pretty early in the morning, so my evenings are free,” Kate said. “And I always make sure that my weekends are free,” Kate then added. She too sat up a bit in the bathtub and noticed that the sounds she was hearing outside her room were gone, so she assumed that Kaycee had passed out or left by now, and right now Kate really didn’t care as long as her friend was safe. “So, are you still going to let me job shadow you?”

The longer that Jason talked to Kate, the more he was beginning to realize how much he really did miss her. He missed just hanging out with her in one of their rooms, just relaxing and talking. They could really talk about anything, and had spent hours just talking about nothing before. Absolutely nothing. Those conversations where, after it was over, you didn’t remember anything that was said. And Jason loved being able to do that with her. He loved that she was fun and liked to just be together. But he had to stop thinking that way, because she had a boyfriend. She had moved on completely, and he thought that he had done the same thing. Apparently, he hadn’t though. He was still getting that pang in his chest whenever he thought about her, that pang that meant he still had feelings for her.

That revelation silenced him for a moment, and he couldn’t think to say anything. Maybe hanging out with her wasn’t a good idea. Jason knew that he still would hang out with her, even though it was a bad idea. He would rather have her in his life as a friend than not at all, and he’d always felt that way. “Okay, whenever you want to grab some coffee is perfectly fine with me,” he told her, nodding his head, and then realizing that she couldn’t see him, and the nod was pointless. “Just give me a call and let me know, and I’ll be there,” he said, hoping he didn’t sound as eager as he thought he did. Running a hand through his hair, he rose a brow. “Shadow me?” he asked, racking his brain to try and remember if she had asked him anything about that. “Oh! Yeah, yeah,” he remembered, smacking himself on the forehead. She had said something to him through journals about it. “Sure, definitely. Just let me know when you want to come in, and I’ll try to have something interesting on schedule for then,” he smiled, scratching his forehead.

If Kate had just sat and thought about it she would of come to the revelation that spending time with Jason alone wasn’t the greatest idea. He was her ex boyfriend who she obviously still had feelings for, thought she knew that she would always have feelings for Jason, and she had a boyfriend that she liked very much and he had a drop dead gorgeous girlfriend. The whole situation was probably spelling out disaster right in front of her, but she wasn’t going to pay attention to that. Also, the fact that Kate knew she wouldn’t tell Jamie when she went to spend time with Jason was a pretty big clue that it was something that she shouldn’t but doing. Though, when did Kate let stuff like that stop her from doing what she wanted? People always said that she was pretty stubborn.

“I’ll give you a call sometime during the week, or after my first set of exams are done.” Kate said. “I am almost done that first photography project, so after that is all done I will have a lot more free time.” Ever since Kate was assigned that project where she was working with Nicole she had been busy working hard to get it all done. It took Kate a while to figure out a theme and where to shoot it, but once that was all out of the way it started to become smooth sailing, well that was until Jason came into the picture. Kate knew that the next time she had to work with Nicole things were going to be pretty awkward, she just hoped it didn’t put a big strain on their working relationship. “Awesome,” Kate said with a smile. “I will talk to my professor and see when we need to get our hours done by. I think we need a certain amount of hours throughout the semester or something like that. I can’t really remember right now.”
