It'd been a week since his TARDIS had shown up on the lawn in the back garden and The Doctor had spent the time going over every circuit board in sight, checking every cable and connection he could find and generally making sure his trusty ship was in order. As eager as his friends had been to get adventuring, he was still a little unsure as to her capabilities in this world. He'd tried her out a little, feeling out the general rules and principles that limited the vessel. Mostly it appeared that as long as he left out time, relative dimensions and space he could go, ooh, anywhere! Of course, that meant she was less a TARDIS and more a rather flashy aeroplane, but it was good to have her with him, none the less. The Doctor had known that the TARDIS was more than a vehicle to him but it wasn't until they'd been parted that he truly understood their bond. She represented everything about Gallifrey that he missed - in a very real way, she was home. And not just because that was where he chose to keep his wardrobe, either. The time machine was a work of art, that showed the craftsmanship of his people to the fullest. There were few other races he'd encountered that possessed even a fraction of this technology and here it was, probably the last vessel of it's kind in the universe, manned by the last of his race. The TARDIS was a symbol of all he'd lost, and all he'd achieved. "It's good to have you back," he murmured to her as he worked. "There was a while there I thought you'd decided to stay in Breakwater Point without me! I should have known you'd find me, sooner or later, eh?" The Doctor chatted away, knowing she understood his every word. "Right then. I think you're ready to go!" he said, giving one of the control wheels a last tighten and oiling a lever, before standing back to admire his handiwork. "So, where shall we go today?" he asked her sociably as he cleaned his hands on an old rag. A noise from behind startled The Doctor and he turned to face the door and breaking into a grin as he saw his friend. "Well well, your timing couldn't possibly be better," he said happily. "I was just going to take the old girl for a spin. Want to come along?" he asked. "Guest's choice of destination," The Doctor leaned against the console waiting for further instructions. |
