Status: Closed/Not Finished

Tonight was not how Damon envisioned the night going. He didn’t expect anything to go boom. And he didn’t think the Augustine subject would still be the thing to talk about. He had told Katherine to drop it right after he told her what happened, but she didn’t listen. He was definitely not going to be sharing anything with her for a while, not if she can’t respect his wishes. It was a good thing that she wasn’t even home yet. He didn’t really want to see her right now. But, she was bound to be home soon and he needed to get out of the house. And just when he thought about leaving, he got a comment from Stefan on the network. After a handful of exchanges they decided that they needed to go explore Portland.

There was no way he was going to walk all the way to Stefan’s or all around town. They needed a car. And it might have taken him a bit of time, but he ended up compelling some guy to hand over the keys to his sweet 64 cherry red Mustang. “Now this is more like it.”

A half an hour later and he was pulling into Stefan’s driveway. Tonight better not go anything like the road trip he had had with the other Stefan. He wanted to have a bit of fun, not a night of more bickering. He had had enough of that with Katherine over the network.

He walked up the path that lead the front door. He knocked and then decided that he wasn’t going to wait for his little brother to answer the door. Instead, he opened it and walked right on it. “I hope you’re not doing anything that I would be doing,” he jokingly said as he took a look around the place.

“You work at a bookstore? That sounds … dull.” Leave it to Stefan to not only get a job, but a boring one at that. “You say that now until you want to stake yourself so the horrible boringness ends.”

For a moment he thought Stefan would object to his little idea, but he hadn’t. Good, because he really did want to see how far they could get before something happened… if anything happened.

“You can blame me. I get blamed for everything, anyway. Then again, this is my idea. So, I take full blame. And aren’t you a little bit curious to see how far we can push it before something happens? If something happens.” Everything was a big if at the moment since they had no clue how this place worked. Could they really just leave and never return or would they be tracked down and brought back?

“You don’t want to talk about what went on back at home, do you?” He tried to get Stefan to say something before when he brought up Katherine, but he had totally gotten shut down. “It’s making me want to know why. There has to be more to it or you wouldn’t have gotten so quiet and you wouldn’t have that look you always get when there’s more to a story then you’re letting on.”

"It's not ... dull," Stefan answered and maybe it was. For someone like Damon. Stefan happened to like books and knew they were used more than just decoration on a shelf. He gave his brother a look - "It's not." And yeah, Stefan wanted to see how far they could push it until something happened. Would they just drive through city limits? OR would they get pushed back - or even better, sent back home.

"I am actually, that doesn't mean it's not your fault - which you seem to take like a man," he grinned, teasing his brother as he hit the gas and kept going, moving in and out through traffic. The grin slowly disappeared though when he mentioned what went on back home. Obviously if Stefan wasn't talking about it, he didn't want to talk about it, but leave it to his brother to keep going on and on about it because he wanted to know. Did it matter? It didn't, at least not to Stefan. He had gotten closer with Katherine, there was something there and then suddenly it was gone. He was dealing with that and the fact that it was Damon she was living with.

"It doesn't matter," Stefan said, looking at him. "It doesn't change anything here." Which was the truth and maybe it was good that it hadn't, or wouldn't. Sure, Stefan cared about Katherine, but like he told her that night, one night wasn't going to change one hundred and forty five years of shit in between. All couldn't be forgiven and all wouldn't be forgiven in one night, but it was Stefan. He cared too fast, too deeply. It was a curse.

Damon looked at Stefan like he just said the most ridiculous thing that could possibly be said. “Uh huh.” He didn’t believe it. Working at some bookstore had to be a huge snooze fest. And then having to deal with crazy customers. He really couldn’t imagine any of that being fun at all. “Just keep telling yourself that.”

“Aww, how cute, you’re trying to tease me.” He smirked and looked forward again. Okay, so he’ll take Stefan trying to tease him over not having Stefan say nothing at all. This trip, so far, wasn’t how he pictured it. He thought for sure there would be a lot more talking going on. But, so far, that hadn’t happened. He glanced over at his brother seeing that the smile that had just been there moments ago was now gone and that look he had before was back. He really didn’t want to talk about and it was obvious by what his brother said next.

“Does anything matter? Because so far it doesn’t seem like it.” Stefan’s silence and his ‘it doesn’t matter’ speech only proved that there was more to the story that Stefan wasn’t sharing. Now if he could only get his little brother to share. He might have to poke and prod a bit more before the rest of the story came out. “You can’t keep it to yourself forever, Stefan,” he warned. “I’ll get it out of you.” One way or another he would do just that.

“So long Portland,” he said the second they passed the city limit sign. “I guess this means that we can leave the city.”

From their phones a loud beeping sound could be heard. After the beeping stopped, Holly’s voice was the next thing to be heard, “Timer activated.”

Damon looked over at Stefan before he pulled out his phone and looked at the screen. There was a timing counting down from twenty-four. “I guess something does happen when we try to leave,” he said as he turned the screen towards Stefan so he could see the countdown as well. “So, what do you think happens when it hits zero? It goes boom?” Okay, so he was joking, but why else would it need to count down?

Stefan was getting more and more annoyed by his brother wanting to know everything that went down in Mystic Falls. It didn't matter because Damon wasn't there. Alright, so that wasn't entirely true. Stefan made it matter when it concerned Augustine and Elena and maybe Stefan forced that talk. Not that it happened yet, but Damon said he would talk to Elena. And Damon was lucky, Stefan could have easily questioned his choices by living with Katherine – which sure, wasn't that far off – but more importantly … they were together? But these were things that Stefan wouldn't bring up because he was sure his brother didn't want to talk about them. But, considering that Damon knew something about what happened back in Mystic Falls, he wanted Stefan's side of it. Caroline was usually great at telling stories though, wasn't that enough?

“Caroline wanted to help me with my PTSD. So she got a safe and brought it over. The exercise was for me to get inside of it, in a confined place and go from there,” he eyed his brother before looking back at the road. “I freaked, naturally, Katherine got in with me. Helped me – somehow got me to calm down.” Stefan thought about that moment, he could see it clear as day and even if the Katherine here didn't remember, he did. It was one of the few acts of selflessness she had ever showed him and he realized a few more things about her that day. Things that were for him only and maybe if they ever left Portland – or woke up, maybe …

“Anyway,” he said, taking a pause and eyed the speedometer. They weren't obeying any speed limits and the way Stefan moved in and out of traffic would have normally gotten him pulled over. Not that it would have mattered, they were vampires with the power of compulsion. Perks.

“We shared a moment – it's over.”

Stefan hadn't noticed until Damon said something but they were out of Portland. He glanced at the rear view mirror and then at Damon. “So we can leave?” That was actually – pretty cool. Stefan grinned at that thought because they could go home, right? Would it be the same? Probably not, but they could go home to Mystic Falls.

That was until Damon realized his phone was beeping and counting down. “What the hell?” Stefan looked at it, but continued to drive. Gripping the steering wheel, he pressed down on the gas even if there were a million questions going off in the back of his mind. He didn't remember being told any of this when he arrived and with a sigh, he pulled to the side of the highway and slowed down, eventually coming to a stop.

“Do we really want to find out what happens?”

Damon thought for sure that Stefan would blow him off again, but instead he actually started to share what had happened back at home. And as Stefan spoke, Damon listened. The more Stefan shared, the more clear everything started to become. So he and Katherine had a moment and that was why his brother got all weird any time Katherine was brought up. “Is it over?” If it was easily over like Stefan said then he would act the way he had been acting since the moment he showed up in Portland.

“Looks like it.” He glanced out the back window as they drove farther away from the city limit. Well, nothing bad had happened to them. The only thing that did happen was the annoying beeping and the count down on his phone. Although, they had no real clue what that meant. Why couldn’t Holly have explained this before they were able to walk out of the hospital? Then again, maybe they weren’t told because they wanted to see how many people would try to leave. He was seriously starting to feel like a rat in a cage.

Once Stefan got a good look at the phone, Damon put it away. There was no point in having out anymore. “What are you doing?” At first it seemed like Stefan was determined to just drive them farther away, but now here they were on the side of the highway. “Yes, we really do. Okay, well, I really want to find out. If you don’t want to find out what happens next, you can get out of the car and find a way back home.” They’d come this far, he wasn’t going to turn back now.

Stefan really didn't have a choice in the matter. It was over because this Katherine had no idea what happened. So when Stefan turned his head, looking at his brother, it was almost as if he was ... pouring salt in that wound as Elena said a few days ago. "Back home? I don't know. I knew she wanted to change. She wanted to make it up to me. She wanted to - I don't know, live. But, the last thing I remember, she dropped and then I was here. So I don't know, Damon. But, I do know that you don't have to worry. Which I'm sure you already know," he said.

"You're seriously going to kick me out if I don't want to go through with it?" He asked a few minutes later. Of course he was going to go through with it, so instead of staying on the side of the road for long, he put the car back into drive and headed back out on the freeway.

It didn't need to be said, but yep, if anything shitty happened to them - it was Damon's fault. He knew it anyway, so it was alright. Stefan drove, moving further and further away from Portland and so far nothing had happened. Then again, it was still counting down he guessed.
