Who: Spencer & Emma
What: Spencer gets some memories and then it's off to the House of Horrors
When: Today
Where: The carnival
Warnings: Drug abuse/addiction, will update more later
Notes: Italics dialogue lifted from Pretty Little Liars

Spencer was an early riser. She woke up with the sun every morning and immediately went out for a jog. Sometimes Emily joined her depending on whether she felt like sleeping in or not. Derek had emphasized cardio with Spencer and she had taken it to heart with a jog first thing ever morning. She was in peak physical condition, better than she had ever been for field hockey. Portland was about the most full contact sport that Spencer had ever encountered. It was while she was out on her jog that her memories began to flood back to her. She almost keeled over right there and then but managed to veer off onto one of the neighbor's lawns. She wasn't even sure whose grass she was laying in.

Spencer, you're right. I have to tell you the truth before it's too late. Dad's taking me to the airport and I'm going back to England. He's been wanting me to go back since I told him what I told him in the police station the night you were gone. Maybe Dad's right and there's nothing to do but keep quiet. But I can't just leave you. Not again. Not like this. So I'm going to tell you the truth and you can do whatever you want with it. Maybe it'll help you. Maybe it won't. But at least you'll know. I saw you the night Alison disappeared. I heard you fighting with her and I saw you. I saw you with a shovel in your hand. It felt like everyone who ever made the mistake of touching Ali was there that night. What's that line from The Tempest? This island is full of noises. Then I saw the body. I thought you killed Alison with that shovel. Now I'm not sure what happened but standing there that's what I thought and I didn't want anyone to know. I couldn't look at her face so I pushed her in and covered it up and I didn't tell anyone about what I did or what I thought you did. Now I know it wasn't Alison and she wasn't dead when I buried her. She was a stranger and I buried her alive because I thought I was protecting you. Our family has a gift for self preservation but there's a point where you go from survivor to predator and I guess that's what happened to us. Goodbye, Spencer. I love you.

Her sister had been the one that killed Bethany Young but Spencer had been arrested for it. That was the last thing she remembered. She remembered the cops putting the cuffs on her and her begging her friends for help in an utter panic while they pulled her away. Alison had set her up, of course Alison had set her up. They were a perfect quartet of friends for a sociopath. Aria was the compassionate one, Hanna was the admiring one, Emily was the loyal one and Spencer was the smart one. It was the reason why Mona had been turned away from Ali's gaggle of girls. Because Alison already had Spencer, she already had a smart girl to manipulate. She didn't need two. That was especially apparent with how Ali was dealing with them back home. She went after the smart ones first. She killed Mona and she set Spencer up to go to jail for a murder that Melissa Hastings had unwittingly committed. Who had hit Bethany Young over the head that night? It was still a mystery but Spencer was willing to put good money on Ali being responsible.

She couldn't go home knowing what she knew. She couldn't look Emily in the face knowing what she knew. She couldn't kiss her girlfriend knowing that Ali's lips had been there first, like poison that still lingered. And Hanna. How could Spencer face Hanna now that Mona was dead? Did Hanna even know? Did she get these memories too? Maybe they were a dream or some sign of something medical like encephalitis. She grimaced at the idea that being sick was somehow better than knowing what Alison had done to destroy them all. But mostly Spencer. She had targeted Spencer and Mona because they were the threat. And now Mona was dead. Spencer didn't think there would ever be a day that she would shed a tear for Mona Vanderwaal, the bitch that had tortured them for a year. Mona had started as A and then it had gotten of control from there but in the end Mona might have been a crazy bitch but she was smarter than all of them. She knew how to take down Ali and she paid the ultimate sacrifice for it. In the end, Mona had chosen their side and the pain that Spencer felt was mostly sympathy pains for Hanna.

She found a cafe, not really caring that she was still wearing no makeup or that her hair was pulled into a messy ponytail and rather than her normally pressed and pleated outfit, she was wearing her running clothes. She only cared how strong the coffee was brewed. As it turned out, it wasn't very strong so Spencer just had to double up. It wasn't enough and Spencer had to fight the urge to find something stronger than coffee to help her with her problems. Oddly enough, having David and Kol around made Spencer want to steer clear of the pills. She had hardly talked to either one of them but had seen enough of them on the network to know that they were very different people but they both looked like Dean to her and she could hear his voice in her head. Annoying and persistent and yet somehow inspiration all at the same time. Of course her personal hell would come equipped with the doppelgangers of her former drug sponsor.

Hours had passed as Spencer drank coffee. Finally she ordered a cup to go and a bundled of jangled nerves she began to wander the city until she came across the carnival. She stopped short and listened and watched as people enjoyed the rides and the games. Spencer didn't know why but she felt compelled to buy a ticket and enter too. It was the kind of place she would have liked to go with Emily but for some inane reason found herself wandering around alone. She wasn't quite ready to face Emily just yet anyway. She still needed to digest the new information that had somehow been downloaded right into her brain.

She wasn't paying much attention when she wandered into a haunted house at the exact same time as an older blonde woman that Spencer knew to be Sheriff Swan from the network. Great. Out of all the people she could have walked into a haunted house with, it just had to be a cop. The cops in Rosewood were all crooked and Spencer had a natural distrust for any officer of the law after dealing with Garret and Wilden. She gave Emma a stiff smile as they walked into a room that was set up to look like a cemetary at night complete with coffins that were propped up from the ground.

"Wow, scary," Spencer said sarcastically as some old Halloween track tape played in the background. Suddenly one of the coffins popped open and a body sprung up from it, stopping short right in front of Spencer. The body was fake of course but she had long curled blonde hair and she was wearing an Ali mask. Spencer's eyes grew wider as she reached out and snapped the mask right off the dummy. Underneath the mask she didn't have a face, it was just stuffing stitched together but painted in red lipstick was a message for Spencer.

I always thought you looked good in orange, bitch. Kisses, A

Portland was the last place that Emma ever wanted to be in. After everything that happened here when younger, she hated this city. Only now she was back in a city that she hated and was the sheriff of this whole place. Even with her record sealed, Emma felt like this was a sick joke with making her sheriff of a station that had arrested her at one point in time even if it wasn’t from the same time.

All week, Emma had been working, which was fine as it kept her mind off what might be going on back home. What the hell the Snow Queen was doing? Was Henry safe? Was her parents safe? How was Killian doing? Emma knew her family wouldn’t allow anything to happen to her son. Then again people said she was still in her world so he was safe. Only reason she was hating this long week of work was because of the carnival or to be more exact it was the food at the carnival. Henry would be driving her nuts to go, but Emma just wanted the food since she could care less about the rest of the stuff going on.

With her day off, Emma had decided to enjoy it with the carnival only she had her phone on her in case she was needed. The whole ordeal with Lena made Emma feel like she deserved some treats considering she knew what that girl was going through and it made her think back to what she had done. After loading up on some fried food and cotton candy, Emma had been sitting at a table to eat. Emma was an adult most of the time, but when it came to food, especially junk food, she was like a kid. Most of it came from the years that she didn’t always get food while being in the foster home or enjoying stuff like this. Now she didn’t have that worry; however, sometimes with the way she ate you would think she was still in the system.

Her stomach was full and she was probably going to be sick if she touched anything else. Emma had no plan on sticking around until her eyes caught the House of Horrors. The whole scary stuff never got to her as it was more fun to see how lame the things were. Biting her lip, she went against her original plan and walked towards the House of Horrors, entering into the place at the same time of some young girl. She noticed her from some network posts, but couldn’t remember her name. Emma gave her a small nod hello as she knew that smile, hell she had that smile to cops for the longest time while she was in jail and once she got out for a while. This girl had a dislike for cops, but Emma wasn’t going to play the whole why the dislike for cops?

Emma only planned on focusing on this house for just some fun before heading back to her place and relaxing in bed until the stomach ache passed. A smirk showed up on her lips at hearing the girl and her comment since it was exactly what Emma was thinking and expecting. It was some cheap carnival horror house so she wasn’t expecting anything big. Hearing a sound from behind her where the girl had been, Emma turned around just in time to see the girl snap the mask off the dummy, turning back around. “You okay?” The question dragged off as Emma’s attention was caught by someone on a fake gravestone, moving up a bit to see that her name was on a folded paper. Emma knew that handwriting as her mother’s as she reached to pull the paper off.

Holding it in front of her as she opened to skim quickly, feeling her heart break into pieces at the words on the paper.

Emma,
We tried to welcome you, but we will never be a family to you. Neal’s our second chance at what we will never have with you and it’s better that way. He’s normal and without magic. I think it’s better for everyone if you just left Storybrooke for good. Henry would be better off without you as you’ll just hurt him again
-Mom

The words were hurting so much as she balled her hand into a fist, trying to keep her emotions into check before her magic got away from her. Last thing she needed was to lose control of her magic just when she got it under control. Balling the note into a ball, but keeping it in her hand. How was that possible?

Spencer nodded but didn't say anything because no, she was not okay. Why the hell had she come here in the first place? This was a horrible idea and now A was here and she was after her. Ali was here? She could have been brought here at any time and she probably knew better than to post on the network as herself. She was probably Vivian Darkblooming the hell out of Portland and her and Emily and Hanna were just waiting around to be picked off one by one like sitting Monas. Aria got the better deal being sent back home.

She turned to see Swan reading something on a piece of paper. Spencer was tall, taller than Swan and she quickly read the note over her shoulder. When Emma turned around she pretended as if she hadn't even though it was obvious that she had.

"I think this place is messing with us. We should just get out of here." It was no secret that Portland liked to play tricks on its residents. Spencer wasn't about to insult Sheriff Swan's intelligence by pretending otherwise. She was the Sheriff which meant that she already knew all about the wacky wormhole hyjinks. It was just that Spencer was used to one terrible thing happening per month. Sometimes the thing lasted longer than other things but generally it was once. Now she was getting memories from home and this carnival was screwing with her. The paranoid part of Spencer's brain wondered if she was being sent a message again.

She turned back the way they had come but a pair of double doors had closed behind them. When Spencer tried to push on them nothing happened, when she tried to pull on them nothing happened. The doors were locked, they were trapped inside. Spencer's teeth clenched and she jerked on the door hard again trying to get out but no luck. She pushed her hand through her hair and took a few steps back. She looked at Emma for a cue as to what they should do next since she was the authority figure between them. Spencer didn't have a high opinion of cops in general but if she was going to be stuck with this one she may as well give her the benefit of the doubt.

"Earlier today I got memories from back home. Did that happen to you too?" she asked.

The words from that message were playing over and over in her head, hurting more than she wanted to admit. Had she read those words a year ago, Emma would have just shrugged it off as she had been waiting for something like that. Now though? Emma had finally accepted her parents, her life, and Storybrooke only to see something like that.

Hearing what the other girl said made sense considering the stories Emma had heard about this place. Though even with knowing that this place was messing with them, the words wouldn’t leave her head, which she knew was probably the point. “I’m with you on that one,” she commented to the other one, planning on leaving this place and getting far away from this hell. Emma had avoided the body swapping drama, which meant this was really her first real run in with the craziness from the wormhole. Trying to keep it together because craziness was her life, but that note wasn’t helping at all in keeping her focus.

Emma watched the girl trying to open the doors considering Spencer was closer to them than Emma. While she was working on those, Emma pulled out her cell phone to use the light, looking around for another door where workers would come in maybe or anything for a way out only to see nothing that could be used. Their only two options was through the doors that Spencer was trying to open or continue on through the ride. Emma glanced back at Spencer to see that the doors weren’t opening before Emma looked over her shoulders at the way they were meant to go. The route Emma would prefer was the shorter one, but the doors weren’t opening; however, they had one more chance with hopes that maybe it would work.

“No, I didn’t get any new memories or anything like that,” Emma started before a confused look showed up. “Wait, what? This place gives you new memories as well?” Shaking her head, she leaned against the bar to give Spencer some room, “Get behind me as I might have a plan to see if this works.” No way was Emma going to use her gun in here as that could end badly, but she could try her magic. Once Spencer had moved behind her so she was out of the way, Emma pushed her blonde hair back. Taking a deep breath, she focused as she bounced from one foot to another just to get herself ready. Emma was still learning her magic and it was weird for her. Holding her hands up, she focused her attention and used her anger to send a huge white light crashing at the doors. The damn things shook, but nothing happened. “Seriously?” She called out at the doors. “Okay, I think our only option is to finish this house. Do you want me to go first?” Emma figured it was the better idea considering she was the sheriff.

Spencer's eyes got really wide when suddenly The Sheriff was shooting lightning bolts with her mind. Well, that was more effective than a gun for sure. When she turned to ask Spencer if she should go first, Spencer gave her an incensed look. "Uh, yeah," she said as if that was the dumbest question she had ever heard. The cop slash lightning bolt thrower should definitely go before the scared teenage girl. Normally Spencer would be full speed ahead, leading the charge but she had a cop with her and Sheriff Swan had a few "enhancements" it seemed. Spencer didn't have to lead this charge.

She stayed close to the petite blonde as they walked into the next room. This room had rows upon rows of rubber skeletons dangling from the ceiling. Spencer grimaced as she pushed the skeletons out of her way but suddenly one reached out and grabbed her. She tried to shriek but it's rubbery hand covered her mouth as it drew her closer. She struggled against the skeleton so hard that eventually she was able to rip herself free and she fell.

Spencer seemed to fall forever until she hit the bottom of a shallow grave. The wind was knocked out of her and she was struck momentarily speechless. That was until a shovel full of dirt was flung onto her face. She tried to move, to brush the dirt away but her arms were too heavy. Her entire body felt heavy as if she was paralyzed as she watched Melissa Hastings in a hurried state try and cover Spencer up with dirt just as she had done with Bethany Young.

"No! Melissa no!" Spencer yelled. "I'm still alive, Melissa! Stop!" But Melissa didn't seem to hear Spencer and instead just kept shoveling dirt on top of her. This must have been how she looked the night she accidentally killed Bethany, Spencer thought wildly. She hadn't thought beyond protecting The Hastings and instead she had unwittingly torn them apart. But she had done it to protect Spencer. Spencer's eyes began to water as the dirt began to pile up until it covered her face and she felt like she couldn't breathe.

"MELISSA!" She screamed and the dirt fell into her mouth, filled her up and tried to suffocate the last breath from her body.

The fact Emma’s light magic didn’t work on the door surprised her as she could send an evil queen and a snow queen flying back, but she couldn’t open some doors. What the hell was this place? Emma knew some would think it was a stupid question, but in her world, she always had people trying to lead the fight or whatever and she figured she would offer out of habit. Moving back in front of Spencer, Emma kept her focus around her as she focused her eyes, which were now slightly adjusted to the dark, looking for any doors to the side to exit out, hoping for one so they didn’t have to go through this whole thing.

A sigh left her lips as Emma didn’t want to deal with the rubber skeletons, pushing them out of the way as she moved slowly along. She didn’t even realize Spencer wasn’t behind her anymore as she moved into the next part, raising an eyebrow at a door in the middle. They had it set up like the front of a house and this was the door, Emma went to open it to find it locked. “What the hell?” She moved down to her knees, pulling out what she needed from her pocket to pick the lock, opening it up to see her son on the other side.

“Henry?” She couldn’t believe this place had her son or was this another trick of being played on her. Turning, she saw the girl was gone, sighing as she couldn’t believe the girl vanished on her.

”Mom,” she turned her head as Henry said that, waiting to hear what he had to say. “I want to stay with Regina, my adopted mother. You left me, didn’t want me, and…,” Emma cut him off as she couldn’t let him finish. “Henry, I had to give you up for your best chance. You know that!” Emma told him as the boy shook his head.

“I deserve better and I want you out of my life. You left me and now I’m leaving you,” Emma shut her eyes at hearing this from her son, telling herself it was this stupid house as she turned to head back the other way. “It’s all in your head. Henry loves you,” she told herself as she got to the other room. “Where the hell did you go? Please tell me you’re in here,” Emma called out, slowly moving into the room, hoping for the girl to say something so Emma could get her.

Spencer could barely hear Sheriff Swan calling for her and when she opened her eyes, she was staring up at Emma. She was on the floor and nobody was piling dirt on top of her. Instead she had been writhing and screaming on the floor. In the corner was a coffin propped up with a fake vampire inside. His eyes glowed red and a tape played in the background.

Mwa ha ha! I vant to suck your blood! Played on a continuous loop.

"Melissa!" Spencer sat up with a start and looked around wildly for his older sister. But she wasn't anywhere to be seen and Spencer wanted to cry. Because damn it, all she wanted was to hug Melissa so hard that she might break. That video had explained so much about Melissa's behavior over the past few years since Ali had disappeared. Spencer thought it was a natural proclivity for Hastings's to snap. But Melissa had snapped for a reason. She sacrificed herself to save Spencer.

And it was all for nothing.

Spencer felt numb as she let Emma help her to her feet. "We need to get out of here," she mumbled. "This place is messing with us." Her heart was racing at the sudden shift in emotions. Her constant state of duress was staring to take a toll on her psychological state and she tried to keep clearheaded.

"We have to go. We just have to go." She walked through a tunnel that turned around and around with Emma following behind her this time. She was determined to get to the end of this hell house and then warn everyone else away from it.

Emma found the girl on the floor, moving around like someone had been doing something to her only she saw nothng. This place was fucking with them. She was sure of that, but Emma had to get them out of here before anything else happened. “Whoa okay, slow down,” Emma said softly to the girl as she sat up quickly, putting her arms down near her to help her up. “No, Melissa that I know or saw,” she told the girl sadly since she saw the way Spencer was looking as she said the name.

Helping Spencer to her feet, Emma nodded at what she said. “Yes, but you don’t need to go walking into anything that will just cause you to end up on the ground again or hurt.” Emma said as she grabbed the girl to tug her back for a moment. “Here use this to light the way as maybe it will keep you focused and whatever is going on to stop as you can keep your eyes on the path,” Emma replied, handing her the phone she had in her pocket, switching to the light so Spencer could lead the way. Emma undid the belt on her holster just in case she had to pull her gun out quickly to protect the two of them.

“Stay close and don’t go walking ahead, alright? I got your back so nothing can get you from behind.” Emma told her, nodding for the girl to move now as they had to get out of here before something else happened. Emma had no idea what this place was doing to Spencer, but Emma had a feeling it was doing the same thing to her as to Emma, which was playing on her fears. Emma feared the rejection from the people she cared about and that was all she kept seeing. Her focus was bouncing between getting the two of them out of here and also on what she had heard and read from two of the people she loved more than anything.

Good luck shooting, hallucinations. That was what Spencer wanted to say but she didn't dare because secretly she did feel a little safer with a cop with a gun right behind her. Although she knew there were all sorts of things in Portland that were impervious to bullets. Hallucinations really being the most mild of them all but she didn't say any of that to Emma.

"What are you seeing?" Spencer asked. "Maybe we have to figure this out somehow. Maybe we have to deal with our issues before we can leave. So if a psychotherapist happens to walk in, I should be good in a month or two." Spencer couldn't help but default to sarcasm, it was her natural response to things. She caught another glimpse of Emma's gun and felt both threatened and safe with it in such close proximity.

"I should tell you that I was arrested for murder back home. I didn't do it," she said quickly. "My sister did but it was an accident and also a really long story. But I don't want you to be surprised if you have to fish me out of a jail cell next."

Spencer was sure that Hastings would quickly make bail for their youngest daughter. It wouldn't do to have her in prison after all. She was already a raging disappointment for getting wrapped up in all of the Ali scandals in Rosewood. Now she was in jail for murdering Bethany Young when she was pretty sure that Alison was the one who hit Bethany and then Melissa had accidentally buried her alive thinking she was burying Ali and that Spencer had killed her.

Maybe she would get a second chance at that if Ali ever showed her face in Portland.

"I see an EXIT sign!" Spencer exclaimed. She raced towards it without thinking even though Emma had told her not to run ahead. She pushed through the door and blinked in shock as she looked around Radley Sanitarium, the mental hospital where Spencer had been briefly institutionalized.

"LET ME OUT!" She screamed as she banged on a window that wouldn't open.

“Great, feels just like Neverland all over,” she mumbled to herself as she thought about the tree that Peter Pan had used to trap Emma, Regina, and Mary Margaret. That stupid tree fed off regrets, which was the reason Emma and Mary Margaret hadn’t been able to move. Part of Emma wasn’t sure if it was a good thing that Regina had no regrets, but at least it saved Henry even though she didn’t regret everything she had done. Only now this place might be keeping them in here until they faced whatever. “My fears. This place keeps showing me my fears. What about you?”

Emma did a double take to Spencer when she said about being arrested for murder, unsure how to handle that until the woman carried on. “Why would I have to fish you out of a jail cell if you didn’t do it?” Emma knew though what it was like to be in jail as she had been in jail, pregnant, and all alone, but it hadn’t been for anything like murder. “This is going to sound weird considering I’m a sheriff, but I know a lot of people who have killed people. I sort of killed my boyfriend who wanted to marry me and that’s a very weird and long story. If it was an accident and/or self-defense then it isn’t a huge deal compared to if you just went out and decided to kill people,” she left off the part about how like people she knew. Evil Queen, the Dark one, Captain Hook, Snow Queen, and others had all killed people just because, but Emma had killed Walsh; however, he was trying to attack her and did it really count when he was a flying monkey?

“Wait…” she tried to grab Spencer, but the girl got ahead of her before she could grab her arm. Spencer had her light and it was dark all of a sudden, cursing until she heard the screaming from up ahead. Did she find the exit? Emma put the gun in one hand, walking a little faster as she caught up to Spencer who was standing in the middle of the room, screaming and banging on nothing. “Wake up. Or snap out of it!” She called to Spencer, moving to nudge her while keeping a slight distance in case she was the type to take a swing. Emma was starting to think she had this thing figured out if she was correct, but she had to know for sure what Spencer was seeing.

Did Emma not have a sister? Was that why she didn't understand why Spencer had been arrested? She was set up and she wasn't about to rat out Melissa for trying to protect her. Melissa was in the UK anyway but Spencer knew that extradition probably wouldn't be a problem so long as they could find Melissa. Emma's story was a lot more disturbing to Spencer especially since she didn't really trust cops to begin with. Maybe Emma had a good reason to kill her boyfriend.

Spencer wasn't the type to come up swinging at all. She knew better than that especially after she had been nearly taken down by a werewolf accidentally. If she had come at Derek swinging (as she often did now in practice) she knew she would have found herself back on her ass. Spencer was too smart for that anyway. She liked to assess a situation and then tell Emily which direction to swing. She had been getting strong though, with Derek's help.

One minute she saw Radley all around her but when Emma entered the picture, the Sanitarium dissolved around her. Instead they were in the horror house themed version of a haunted asylum. There were doctors with various instruments that looked terrifying. Spencer wouldn't have lasted a day in Radley if that was how it really was. Patients were strapped down to their gurneys and beds in various states of duress. One patient was being given fake electrotherapy.

Spencer pushed a mop of dark brown hair off of her forehead and gave Emma an apologetic look. "Sorry," she said. "I thought I was somewhere else. I thought..."

She had already confessed to being arrested, she wasn't sure she wanted to add on that she had been a patient in a mental institution on top of it. That was a little too much baggage to unload on one stranger.

Emma understood the whole not wanting to rat someone out only that had been her ex-boyfriend who in a way set her up. But she really wasn’t used to seeing family members watch out for one another until recently. Most of her life had been alone and the few people she trusted had screwed her over. So on one hand she understand cause of her family now, but sometimes it still caught her off by surprise.

When Spencer calmed down, Emma stepped back, looking at the younger girl. “You thought what? Actually, you don’t need to tell me unless you want to since that’s your business,” Emma told her, looking around to get a feel for where they were and to check if anything was around that they could use, but this stupid place had no easy exits.

“Okay, I might have this place figured out, but I need something from you, alright?” Emma looked right at her, making sure she was paying attention since Emma didn’t need her to run off again. “What are you seeing? I told you I’m seeing my fears. Is that the same for you?” If that was the case, Emma might have an idea on how to get out of here, but she first had to hear if she was correct. If this place was going for your fear maybe like Spencer said you had to face it, but you had to be facing that fear instead of just saying you were over it.

Spencer nodded. She was willing to give anything, do anything, say anything to get out of here. Even if it meant telling the esteemed new sheriff her carefully guarded secrets. Spencer would put her own spin on them of course. She was a liar and lying was what she did.

"I don't know? I guess so. I'm not sure but everything I've seen so far has been pretty scary." They still didn't know who hit Bethany Young with the shovel, another reason why Spencer hadn't confessed Melissa's secret to the detectives who arrested her for the murder. Maybe Spencer was the reason Bethany was dead. If she hit her in her drug fueled rage than Melissa really was protecting her. But what reason did Spencer have to kill Bethany? She couldn't think of any. She didn't even know the girl or anything about her at the time.

"I guess so. Yeah. My fears." Her fear that Melissa really was the predator that she claimed they all were in that video she had made for Spencer. The fear that Spencer was too late to save, that she would just fall into the Hastings trap because that was what they did. She was afraid of prison and of being back in Radley where all of the madness seemed to always stem from.

But most of all Spencer was afraid of A.

"But how does that help us get out of here?" Spencer asked. She was staying close to Emma this time. She had learned her lesson the first time that she had made the mistake of going running off on her own.

Emma raised an eyebrow, listening to what Spencer had to say and it was sounding like it was along the same lines as what Emma kept seeing. When Spencer finally said that it was her fears, Emma sucked on her bottom lip as she looked around the place. This was a bit like the tree in Neverland only with different issues that had to be dealt with. This was the fears and Emma had a pretty good idea on what might work, but the only way to find out was if she gave it a try.

Part of her felt like she should go first to see if it worked, but Emma didn’t want to leave this girl in here alone if Emma was able to get out. It was a tough call; however, at least with Spencer going first, she would have Emma around to help her out. “Okay, you may not like the sound of the idea, but it could work and I really think once we go with my idea that this place will let us go,” Emma moved to look right at the girl, stopping in the spot so they could talk.

“I’m thinking this place wants us to face our fear. Now I know I should go first, but I don’t want to leave you in here alone in case anything goes wrong. So I’m going to stay here and let you go ahead of me with hopes this place will start up again. I want you to face your fear no matter how scary it is because I know you can do it. Just face it, tell it you’re not afraid, and I’ll be here to help you if it gets to be too much. I want you to scream my name if you can’t face the fear and I’ll come snap you out of it, alright?” Emma knew this was such a long shot, but she had a weird feeling that this was going to be the only way that they might be able to get out. If this place was wanting them to be scared, then it would be ten times better to force someone to try to face their fear just to leave.

“Do you think you can do that? Like I said I’m having you go first just so you don’t get stuck in here alone in case it works.” Emma hated letting her go first, but it was the only way to maybe help Spencer.

"I really have to go first?" Spencer asked. She remembered what happened the last time she had gone first. She hadn't particularly liked the outcome. But if all she had to do was face her fears than that was what she would do. Spencer could face her fears because she had done it a million times before. The problem was that her fears always seemed to be one step ahead of her. Because was everywhere and she was everyone and Spencer could trust nothing and nobody except for the girls.

She walked ahead of Emma into a darkened room but suddenly it was as if the room had become Spencer's backyard, the one she shared with Ali. There was a thunderstorm and lightning ripped through the sky. The glow of it cast an eerie light on a figure ahead with blonde curls and a redcoat on. The face was shadowed because of the hood but Spencer knew exactly who she was facing.

"Alison?" she demanded. The red hooded figure turned away but Spencer gave chase. She ran as hard as she could trying to catch up with the blonde in the red hood. It took a bit of extra effort but Spencer was spry and fast thanks to Derek's training. She pounced and knocked Redcoat to the ground. She turned the girl around only to find that she was staring into the bloated dead face of Bethany Young. Spencer immediately scrambled off of her. She balled her hands into two fists.

"I'm not afraid of you!" she yelled at the top of her lungs but laughter was the only reply. Laughter, giggles, chuckles echoing at her from every corner of the room. Spencer felt suffocated and cornered by the laughter that came from seemingly nowhere.

“Do you really want to be stuck in here alone without anyone to snap you out of it if you’re unable to face them?” Emma asked, tilting her head slightly. Emma knew what it was like to face her fears as she kept having to do it and break habits that she had for years, but the last thing she was going to do was put someone at risk when she couldn’t help them. That was the only reason Emma was making Spencer go first was because Emma wanted to make sure she was here to help the girl if she couldn’t take her demons on as some were scarier than others. “I know it may seem bad, but I believe you can do it. Show whatever it is that you’re not scared and make them back off,” Emma told the girl before letting her go ahead, hoping that this would work.

Standing in the dark, Emma listened as she hoped that this would be the answer to their problem. If this place wanted them to see their fears, then it meant it wanted them to face them. She walked back and forth in the room that she stayed in, listening for any sign of her name as she heard a brief momen of yelling, but it wasn’t her name. “Come on this has to work. Don’t let your fear control you, face your demons,” she mumbled to herself as if Spencer could hear her cause Emma was also preparing herself if this did work. While listening for her name or some sign that she had to go bail Spencer out, Emma went over in her head how she was going to have to return to the station and put some officers on this place with hopes of keeping people from heading into here without warning about this place.

Redcoat was everywhere and Spencer was afraid. She didn't want to come face to face with the bloated corpse of Bethany Young again. But Spencer had always been brave and now thanks to Derek and Emily, she was strong too. She raced after the girl in the red coat, Alison DiLaurentis and not Bethany Young. They were sisters but they were not the same. Not that Spencer had ever actually met Bethany.

She chased after her, running as fast as she could and this time she didn't do a full body tackle, she wasn't going to repeat the same mistakes. She grabbed her arm and when Redcoat turned around Alison's cruel face stared back into Spencer's.

"You set me up for Bethany Young!" Spencer accused her but Ali's face stayed calm and cold.

"Prove it," she challenged Spencer. "Face it, Spencer. You are my doll. You do what I say, when I say it. I pull the strings and you dance. That's the way it's always been and it's the way it will always be. If I want you to rot in jail you'll rot in jail, bitch."

Spencer slapped Alison so hard that it stung her hand. It looked as though it had stung Ali's face too because she gave Spencer a hurt look but that hurt quickly turned to vicious anger.

"You think that's bad?" Ali hissed. "Just wait and see what I do to Emily and Hanna."

Spencer could feel the hefty weight of the shovel in her hands. It was one thing to threaten her, it was another to threaten her girls. Nobody was going to hurt Hanna or Emily. She didn't fear the shovel anymore, she wielded it like a weapon, like the way she held that crowbar the night Noel had tried to steal something from her.

She swung hard and hit Ali right in the head. The petite blonde fell to the ground in a heap and Spencer stumbled towards the exit door. She pushed through, breathing hard as she took a few unsteady steps outside of the tent. She was outside again. Kids were giggling in the background, people screamed on rides, teenagers milled around talking. Spencer was outside and back out into the carnival and outside of the haunted house.

"Sheriff Swan!?" She turned back towards the door and tried to pull it open but it seemed glued shut. She couldn't get back in.

Emma had been taking calm breaths, pacing as she waited for something from Spencer whether it was a successful something or something for Emma to help her with, but for something. Though also worried because if this worked, then Emma was going to need to face her fear, but if it didn’t work, then they were stuck in this hell. At first, she paused and then she heard the yell for Sheriff Swan only it sounded like it was coming from outside this place.

If that was the case, then the plan worked and that meant Emma was going to need to face her fear head on. Emma was good at just not thinking about it, avoiding it, and just moving on from all the fears she had. The woman was beyond screwed up, which she knew and it was just easier to avoid it. Only this place had other plans in mind as it seemed, she would have to own up to it.

“Yeah, I hear you and it seems you’re outside so I guess it worked,” she yelled as loud as she could, unsure if Spencer could even hear her in hear. “Alright Emma, you can do this. Just face your fear,” she told herself, bouncing on the balls of her feet as if she was ready for a fight before stepping into the room Spencer had gone into, cringing when she found her boyfriend standing in front of her. Of course this place would go for that one after all it had already done her two biggest ones.

“Swan, it was a mistake to give up the Jolly Roger for you. Baelfire or Neal as you knew him was smart in knowing how to get rid of you and I can’t seem to get rid of you,” Killian told her causing Emma to tense up. This wasn’t real. “No, there is nothing wrong with me. I believed that all my life because of everything, but people want me in my life,” she told him, trying to stay strong as this hurt more than anything.

“You really think that, mom?” The voice behind her caused her to turn around quickly as she looked at her son. “You gave me up like I was nothing and then tried to run. My grandparents, your own parents had a baby just because they wanted someone better than you and I don’t need you.”

Emma knew those words as those had been ones in her head so many times causing her to stand her ground for once. “No, I gave you up so you had your best chance just like my parents did. I finally found my home and you’re apart of that home and that will never change. I love you, Henry and I know that this life isn’t like it had been before as no one is pushing me out.”
Those words caused him to vanish right in front of her and then some lights turned on causing her to see the exit. Moving forward, she pushed on it to find her way out and into the light where Spencer was. “Are you okay?” She asked, touching the girl lightly on the arm as her sheriff side kicked on.
