Spencer Hastings was furious.

It was her own fault but no matter how many times Spencer became her own undoing she continued to repeat the same mistakes. She had thought for maybe five seconds that she could trust Stefan. He was friends with Elena and Elena had saved her life, that definitely earned her points. And in a way it earned all the vampires in Portland points. Spencer was still convinced they were all dangerous but now believed that not all were evil. Elena certainly wasn't. Stefan was her friend and that stood to reason that he wasn't either but Spencer had found out quickly that Elena just had bad taste in friends. She had taken a chance when she had confided in Stefan, thinking that he would be quick to condemn the bitch who was blasting him on the network but instead he had betrayed Spencer's confidence and told her everything.

That had only lead to the Samara wannabe going to Emily to tattle on Spencer. Of course Emily had taken Rebekah's side and had come after Spencer with metaphorical guns blazing. The whole thing had only served to divide Spencer and Emily and push Emily closer to the twit with fangs. Spencer wasn't ready to admit that she had any feelings towards Emily that were romantic in nature. She would probably never be ready if Emily continued to make horrible decisions when it came to who she spent her time with. But that didn't change the ferocious protectiveness that Spencer felt towards all of her friends, Emily included. Nobody messed with the girls and got away with it. Nobody except for A.

Spencer had already begun what she liked to call the Bulletin Board of Beasts in her bedroom. It was an enormous bulletin board that she had picked up at The University after work one day. She had bought a ton of pushpins and began to put her knowledge of the network to good use. She had mapped out almost everyone, with the most dangerous of the whole lot being her top priority. She had also picked up a few deadbolts at the local hardware store and installed them herself on both the windows and the door. She missed Toby but she knew he would be proud of how vigilant she was being. They couldn't afford to be anything less than extremely cautious. Spencer had already made that mistake once and had gotten an arrow in the stomach for her trouble.

Stefan had offered her vervain though and that was better than any deadbolt because it was probably just a matter of time before one of the girls would have a bleeding heart or would accidentally invite a vampire in. A deadbolt wasn't going to do much in that situation. But vervain? Vervain would go a long way in protecting them. She was going to need to find some wolfsbane because werewolves were also a thing in Portland. Aliens were in the mix and angels too and all sorts of things that Spencer had never believed in before. The monsters back in Rosewood were people. She didn't know which was worse. Stefan had offered her vervain and that was more important than her intense aggravation with him. But since she was Spencer Hastings she wasn't about to leave without giving him something to think about. Because as she had learned during her formative years in Pennsylvania, humans could be damn scary too.

She walked into the bookstore and browsed for a few minutes before she saw him in the back corner shelving a handful of books. Spencer stood there and watched him for a moment, folding her arms over her chest and putting on her best icy glare.

"Why even bother?" she asked him.

She narrowed her eyes even further at him. Did she really have to explain to him what he had done wrong? Maybe to a vampire the sense of right and wrong were skewed. Spencer wouldn't doubt that for a second. Stefan had an obviously stupid look on his face like he didn't know what she was talking about and chances were good he was merely a dolt who meant no harm.

Spencer sighed. She had no patience for betrayers and slightly more patience with stupid people (that she didn't know). "Do you have the vervain for me?" she asked sharply. She could have answered his question but first thing was first and Spencer was getting right down to business. She had already made the mistake of trying to be friendly with this vampire once and it had backfired in the worst of ways. Now it was almost a guarantee that Rebekah would be compelling Emily and drinking her blood. It was predictable and irritating and Spencer blamed Stefan.

First thing was first. Vervain. She needed to start slipping it to all of her friends but especially Emily. Because if Emily was filled with vervain she wouldn't be able to be compelled or used as a human juicebox by Samara version 2.0. The undead model. So she was willing to wait on giving Stefan an earful of her current feelings on him until she had the plant in her hand. Once she had the plant in her hand she would unleash on him and hope like hell he didn't try and wrestle the vervain back away from her.

Spencer was afraid. She was scared because a simple walk had almost been the end of her life. Without Elena's sudden appearance, Spencer knew that without a doubt she had bled to death in that alley by the dance school.

Stefan nodded towards the backroom and Spencer followed him back there. "Why bother with the normal bookstore manager routine?" Spencer asked him, working hard to keep her tone light and judgment free. She wasn't doing a very good job because Spencer was almost always judging. "Can't you just compel yourself whatever you want? So why the pretense with the job?"

She seemed to be all business, which really, he guessed this was a ... type of business transaction except he wasn't expecting payment of any kind. He just wanted her and her friends to be safe in Portland. He didn't mind dishing out the vervain if he had it only because it meant that it would less people that were able to be manipulated by vampires.

"Yeah, I got it."

He grabbed his coat that was hanging on the back of the door and grabbed the bag of vervain. He had already wrapped it up for her and he held it out for her. She took it and he hung his coat back up.

"Yeah, I can just compel whatever I want. But this isn't home." It wasn't. It wasn't Mystic Falls and things were different. Maybe he wanted to live some type of normal life. He didn't want to live his day to day like a vampire because he hated being a vampire and in Portland he could ... lie. Sure, it was all a lie. This. This job. His life. But he felt normal for the first time in all of his existence besides when he was alive.

"I have my reasons," he finally said, not wanting to divulge his life, secrets, not because he didn't want to tell her about it, but more so because she probably didn't want to hear it.

He stood there, looking at her for a moment. "So, I talked to Rebekah last night. I told her to back off. I didn't name any names, but I just let her know that she needed to, I don't know, reign it in. Hopefully, she won't be a problem for you or your friend anymore."

She studied him when he admitted that back in his home world he just compelled whatever he wanted. That didn't really seem fair. That could have made Spencer a hypocrite since she was used to a certain lifestyle that her parents' incomes afforded her. She might not have worked for her money but her parents had. She couldn't just stare at someone and expect them to hand over a brand new Kate Spade bag. If she could, life in Portland would be a lot easier.

Her face went stony as he admitted that he talked to Rebekah the night before. "No kidding," Spencer snapped back at him. "Emily flipped out on me last night because she went crying to her about it." Spencer sighed heavily. "I told you, my friend doesn't always make the best decisions. And Rebekah looks exactly like her ex girlfriend. I trusted you for like half a second and then you reminded me why I never trust anyone."

It was difficult to trust people when virtually everyone lied to you. Spencer lied often too but she didn't see it that way. She didn't think about her own lies when she went searching recklessly for the truth. She just charged in whichever direction she felt was best without regard for the consequences.

"The only thing you did was make things worse. There's no way that you didn't name any names. What is she a psychic vampire? Is that a thing now too? I haven't caught that on the network yet but I figured there's a few things you and your people keep secret."

Stefan had to have told Rebekah it was Emily and Spencer. Otherwise, how could she have possibly known? Spencer paid very close attention to the network and saw the amount of people Rebekah talked to. How was it possible that she had ascertained it was Spencer unless Stefan told her.

"Whatever you told her, it doesn't matter if you said my name. It made things worse. You made things worse."

She really hoped he wasn't planning on wrestling the vervain away from her. Because Spencer was fired up and had a death grip on the planet. She was absolutely ready to go to war with a vampire if she had to.

Stefan's face fell slightly when Spencer went in on him. About how Emily flipped out on her because ... Rebekah ... what? Stefan should have known that Rebekah would have gone to her. Actually, he shouldn't have. He didn't realize they were that close. Stefan thought he was looking out for Rebekah, but Rebekah saw it as what? Him trying to keep the two girls apart? What was she thinking.

He sighed, heavily because he couldn't believe it. Who was this girl to Rebekah? Sure, Spencer reminded him again that Rebekah looked like her friends ex girlfriend, but ... Unless Rebekah knew that. And she was working that angle. For what? Blood? Sex? Amusement? Probably all three. And he hated thinking that about Rebekah, but if anything, Rebekah was unpredictable. He was pretty sure there was something going on with Rebekah and Santana and while he never brought it to Rebekah's attention, or had any proof, it was something in the back of his mind. He could have been wrong though. Actually, he hoped he was wrong.

"She's not a psychic vampire," Stefan sighed and looked at Spencer. He didn't bother pulling out his phone to show her the conversation. Honestly, what Spencer thought of Stefan, he didn't care - much. He did what he did to look out for Rebekah, but now he knew that wasn't needed. Not anymore. Probably not ever.

"I don't know what to say other than I'm sorry." He was being honest and there was nothing he could do about it. She could be upset with him all she wanted, but at least now she had vervain to give her friend and herself.

"I honestly didn't think Rebekah knew your friend enough to go to her and bitch about it," he said with a shake of his head.

"Your sorry isn't going to fix this," Spencer said seriously. "But the vervain definitely helps. So thanks," she admitted begrudgingly. At least now she could slip some vervain into the girls' morning coffee for awhile to make sure that nobody could compel them or feed from them. The fact that Stefan was so willing to hand it over did almost make Spencer feel like she could trust him. Even if she had vowed to never make that mistake again.

"She doesn't know her well enough to do that or at least I don't think that she did. But I can't keep track of every move she makes, okay? I draw the line at being anybody's babysitter." While Spencer was ferociously loyal to Emily, she wasn't about to go following her every move either. She had done that once before when she realized that Emily was having secret meetings with Alison. It had only escalated into Emily being pissed at her as usual. Excuse her for caring.

"They might not have been that close before but now they are and it's because of whatever you said to her. I don't want you to do anything about it. I don't want anything from you. The only thing I want is more vervain when we need it. And then we're square. Deal?"

Spencer believed Stefan. He didn't sound or look like the kind of guy that was setting his psycho ex girlfriend after people. He just said the wrong thing to the wrong person and it had backfired. It wasn't like Spencer had never done anything like that but she had an inkling from the very beginning that Stefan wasn't very bright. He was incredibly good looking and that helped but he was no brain trust.

She looked up into his eyes fearlessly. He hadn't made a grab for the vervain and seemed pretty contrite about everything. It was in her best interest to remain friendly so that she could get more vervain when she needed it.

No, she was right. His apology wasn't going to fix this, not in the least. And he hoped the vervain did. Well, he knew it would, but that was if her friend actually took it. He wasn't sure how Spencer would bring that up with her friend and he didn't care. If anything, Spencer seemed like the type of girl that could get something done and she seemed extremely protective. Her friend should be lucky to have someone like that in their life.

"Right, yeah," he said, nodding as he listened to her and then it came back full circle again and landed on him. All of this was his fault. But, she didn't want him to do anything about it, which he wasn't. He was staying out of it for right now and she didn't want anything from him, which alright - he could do.

All she wanted was the vervain, which he couldn't fault her for that. "Yeah, that's fine," he said, looking at her for a moment.

"Whenever you need it, just let me know." It was something that he would usually always have, mainly because he made sure that Robin took it. He didn't want her falling victim to a vampire, even if it was from him.

"Just drop me a note when you run out and I hope everything with your friend works out. And Rebekah - well - she's like a kid, the more you tell her no, the more she's going to want it, but if your friend is encouraging ... whatever because she looks like her ex girlfriend, then you're going to have a problem even bigger than this on your hands."

"Thanks," she said. There was still a hint of grudging forgiveness in her voice. It wasn't easy for Spencer to forgive, not nearly as easy as it was to get angry in the first place. Stefan was even easier to be angry at since she had no former ties to him. She didn't care about him. They weren't friends or family. He was just a stupid vampire but he was a stupid vampire with vervain.

"I'll be in touch when I need more." She gathered the flowered plant in her arms and tucked it under her coat. It was a little warm for a coat but Spencer had warn it anyway. Not only was it on sale and really cute but it was also perfect for hiding plants under. She had no idea just what the supply and demand for vervain was in this city so she didn't want to risk anyone trying to take it away from her on the way home. She didn't trust anybody in this town since she could vividly recall what it felt like to be shot with an arrow.

"You dated a thousand year old child," she said. Her tone was filled with judgement. But the judgement wasn't entirely aimed at Stefan. Spencer took some of it on herself. Because she had to have known better than to trust the guy who had actually dated that. Spencer had viewed Samara as attractive so she was sure that Rebekah was too if you weren't grossed out by her behavior. Stefan obviously hadn't been that grossed out and that called his judgement into question. Spencer had trusted the guy who trusted Rebekah and that called her judgment into question. Nobody here was blameless but Spencer would continue to pretend she was.

"Anyway, thanks for the vervain. I'll let you know when I need more." And because Spencer needed nothing else from Stefan ever, she turned on her heels and headed out through the bookstore and back towards home where she could take a look at the vervain, study it's properties and begin distributing it to her friends.
