and the landscape of merry and desperate drought;
Who: Lily and Idris
What: Unsettling dreams, strange, sudden rain, and one very frustrated Lily make for not the most opportune time to shoot the breeze. Idris will persevere nonetheless--he's feeling weird this weekend, not to mention particularly compassionate, as it were.
Where: The parking lot of Pax...for now.
When: 3:25 P.M., October 2nd
Warnings: TBA
Notes: The bearer of the sun and the desert meet yet again? Yes. :D The side effects of October's craziness begin!
He'd been having strange dreams over the weekend, and on Saturday afternoon, his boss' small desk plant had wilted somewhat during their discussion. George had complained about feeling a bit parched. The plant was much, much less of a concern to Idris than his dreams. George, too.
Everyone had nightmares once in awhile, but he wasn't sure if it was common to dream of a desert without end, nothing but red sand stretching underfoot as far as the eye could see. Looking up in these dreams was even worse, for the blue of the sky went on for miles, with no rain-swollen clouds in sight. The heat was blistering, and the windswept sand clung to his skin, tiny particles that built up over time. He gave up trying to dust all of them off--it became a pointless endeavor and one that wasted precious energy.
In these dreams, he'd walk across this all-encompassing desert, never reaching the relief of a hidden oasis. And while it seemed oddly poetic to not end up sunburned from his efforts, it was perplexing more than anything else. Under such harsh rays of the sun, he should've been burnt to a complete crisp. Instead, he went on and on, searching for signs of life, never having felt more restless or more alone.
Despite his sense of unease at not finding anyone or anything amidst the desolate landscape, he didn't once feel terrified. Instead, he felt at home, at home in such a hellish place. Oh, but it had been no Arizona sky he was under in those dreams. Idris was never more certain of this than when he first awoke, breathing hard, sweating as if he really had journeyed to the ends of the world and back.
This morning had been no different. He'd immediately hit the shower as soon as he was out of bed, wanting to wash away the memory of his dream from the night before as much as he wanted to be clean again, inside and out. The problem was that unlike most dreams (which quickly faded into nothing but miniscule details and the vague notion of having achieved feats only possible in the subconscious realm), these stuck with him throughout the entire day. Saturday he'd worked, and so that was a welcome distraction. But he had Sunday off, as he always did.
Idris filled his morning with a jog, a trip to the gas station, and then headed to one of the nondescript bars nearby, where he'd played pool with strangers for a couple of hours. Still he felt as if the California sun was the one from his dream, a blinding sphere of light that burned him with its intensity, scorched his skin. But he was only imagining things. The light rain which started to fall when he was but two blocks from home made him feel relieved, and he breathed easier. Pulling into the parking lot of Pax, he quickly shut his engine off, got out of his car, and locked the doors. He didn't mind the rain falling on him, not one bit.
Car key slipped into his back pocket, Idris spotted a familiar neighbor as he started to head towards the front of the building. He hadn't seen Lily in some time, but with her shock of auburn curls she wasn't hard to forget. He thought back to her suggestions to him about how to make a great salad--of all things--and smiled, inviting himself over to where she was angrily pounding upon her car's driver side door. His smile had lessened completely by the time he was a friendly distance away from Lily. Now was not the time for amusement at a memory; in fact, there was nothing amusing right now in the least. She was frustrated and upset. The rain was engaging in war against her hair, and no matter what she did, there was no way her car was going to cut her some slack.
"Lily?" Idris inquired, concerned. "What's going on?"
