Let’s Rest Awhile Inside the Cave
Who: Sean & Karin.
What: With Fiona at work, Karin seeks out company.
Where: 105.
When: 2 October, 1:29 a.m.
Warnings: None yet.

Karin woke to the sound of her own choked cry.

Her heart beat a violent tattoo against her ribs, her tongue swollen and dry in her faintly open mouth. She could not quite recall the nightmare, though she felt the echo of its touch on every part of her sweat-drenched skin. She remembered water, and earth, and an emptiness so deep she could not truly fathom it. It was too much.

Slowly she unclenched her hand from the sheets, realizing just as sluggishly that she had in her terror reached out for her sister, like a child unable to care for herself. Shame flushed hot upon her cheeks. Fiona was at work, as was right and good; already Karin had set Fiona too far back, had imposed too much upon her social calendar, her work schedule, her very enjoyment of her own home’s comforts. Fee had sacrificed enough. Knowing this, Karin had foolishly convinced herself she could make it on her own, that the restful nights her sister had spent by her side had helped her enough that for one brief night she would not need such coddling. She had, of course, been wrong.

The thought of attempting sleep again drove her mad. The bed was too big, too cold, too lonely to be welcoming. Shadows danced in the corners of her vision, taunting her with their constant evasion. In the unlit bathroom she washed her face, the frigid water rousing herself at least to some degree. Her mind raced, but she could think of only one place to go now, only one person who might set her at her ease.

And so a quarter of an hour later she found herself staring at the quite familiar door beside her own, her tired eyes tracing the lines that read 105. She hated herself for seriously considering waking him at this hour. She wondered what she would say, what she could say, were he to be angry or put out by her familiarity, her thoughtlessness. But desperation drove her on, and she gave a quiet, rapping knock.

“Sean?” she said, her voice a stadium whisper. “Sean, it’s Karin.” She knocked again, gritting her teeth, swallowing her humiliation. “Please be awake...”

Karin followed him inside, turning to carefully close and lock the door behind her. She hoped there was no reason for such paranoia, but one could not be sure; the building had seen stranger things than random interlopers, even on their very floor. "I uh..." She pulled a hand through her hair, wincing as her thin fingers caught on a tangle. Moving with slow, shuffling steps she joined him in the kitchen, casting a glance around the comfortingly familiar surroundings. "I had a bad dream."

Looking over his state of undress, she realized just how inappropriately she herself was clothed. Clad in track shorts, tank top, and precious little else, she suddenly felt self conscious, and more than a little foolish for having run out so quickly. Her arms folded across her chest, hiding the swell of her breasts beneath the thin cloth. Forcing her eyes away from his skin, away from the muscled slope of his shoulders, she looked down at her bare feet, her teeth sinking into the swell of her lower lip. "I'm sorry I woke you," she said, though the moment she spoke it, she knew it for a lie. In truth she was more pleased than she could put to words that he had answered the door. "Fee's at work. I didn't know where else to go."

"Don't be ridiculous Karin, I'm glad you woke me up. I appreciate that you thought to come to me of all people." Sean grabbed two mugs out from his cabinet, one sea foam green, the other an emerald Irish Kelly Green color. Both mugs were tall and skinny with dark blue handles and a handmade appearance. It took some digging and stretching to reach the back of his tea cabinet, but after some struggling, he eventually found a box of chamomile tea that didn't look too expired. He threw a tea bag and a spoon in each cup, and squirted a healthy dose of honey in each of their mugs. Normally he would ask her how she liked her tea and which kind she preferred, but she could use some sleepy tea, and honey was the only thing that made chamomile taste good.

He turned around, leaning against the kitchen stove, looking at her. She was certainly a sight, barely dressed in her pajamas, and he suddenly wished that he was dressed in something a little less revealing than boxers that did nothing to hide how attractive he thought she looked right now. "Do you want to talk about the dream?" Saved by the boiling water, the tea kettle went off, so he poured water in both of their mugs, handing her one and sitting down next to her with his own mug.

She took the tea from his hands, wrapping her own loosely around the hot mug as she settled into her seat. It was a welcome kind of burn after she had awakened to such lonely cold; it was no real substitute for warm flesh and solid bone, but it would do. Her thumb flicked against the string of the tea bag, her jaw working, though no sound came out. The dream's details eluded her, but she recalled enough to at least provide him a rough sketch. Unconsciously she sidled closer to him, their bare shoulders brushing; she found his solidness reassuring, a comfort she desperately craved. "I don't know," she said, her voice a soft whisper. She reached for the spoon, clutching it like a lifeline; when she stirred her tea, the spoon's clinking on the cup's walls sounding like wind chimes. She smiled weakly, though whether it was at the sound or Sean's concern, she could not have said.

"Sometimes I dream about drowning," she said. Her voice broke on the last, fear bleeding into her very posture. Her shoulders slumped, and she fought to meet his eyes. "I feel sand between my toes, but I can't push off. I can't surface." She raised the mug to her lips, taking a long, slow draught of still painfully hot tea. It tasted good, for all that, and went some way toward clearing her head. "I wake up in so much pain. I used to think I just hadn't stretched enough before my workouts." She shook her head, a dusky blush painting her cheeks. "I think that's what it was tonight. But..." She chanced a glance back to him, searching for any sign of judgment or disdain in his eyes.

As Karin talked, Sean was definitely listening, but he had to admit that he wasn't completely listening. He heard what she was saying and processed it, but most of him was focused on how the shorts were rising to be even shorter in the chair, or how he was hoping her tank top would be a bit more revealing in the chilly apartment. He felt ashamed because he normally was a very, very good listener. Sean set his mug down and stood up to stand behind her, massaging her shoulders with a sudden desperate need to touch her, but he also knew that it had to be soothing and relaxing. "Dreams can be very powerful things, and I'm a firm believer in the fact that they hold meaning, maybe we just need to get to the bottom of what your dreams are trying to tell you. Then again, if it's a simple need to stretch more, we can work on that too." Sean smiled as he looked at her, continuing to massage her shoulders.

Thoughtlessly she rolled her shoulders beneath his hands, arching into his touch. Her brow had furrowed at his suggestion, but as the hard knots of tension in her muscles began to slowly dissipate, the idea of delving into her dreams, seeking some meaning in their damning imagery, grew steadily less frightening. She liked the idea that it was a simple matter of stretching before and after workouts, continuing her yoga, and training her body back into the forgotten art of relaxation. A niggling voice at the back of her mind assured her this was certainly not the case, that there was more to it than that, but as his warm hands worked at the pain slicing through her back, that voice grew ever easier to ignore.

"Which do you think it is?" she asked, dreamily, leaning back toward him. "Be honest."

Sean wasn't one to lie, but he found himself wishing he could lie to Karin to comfort her. A dream that strong and constant had to mean something, didn't it? He looked down at her with a faint smile, eyes darting down a bit to her chest and quickly back up to her eyes. What if he just avoided the question? No, there was no avoiding it at this point, his pause had already made his answer obvious. "I think dreams almost always have meaning Karin, but we will figure it out together, I promise." What a bold promise, a promise he knew he was most likely incapable of keeping. He kept his hands on her shoulders, but had stopped the massage. "We'll work under assumption that you need to relax more before you sleep and see if that helps."

A smile twitched at the corner of her lips, uncertain, unsure. She sipped at her tea, wincing at its sweetness on her tongue. He free hand reached up to fit close over his, loosely interlacing her fingers with his own. "Yoga?" she asked, half-heartedly, finding herself disappointed with the suggestion the moment she spoke it. She leaned back into his grip, glancing up, looking over her own shoulder to meet his eyes. She felt whatever resolve she had slipping away, dissolving the longer she felt the heat of him through her thin pyjamas. Fiona would approve of this, she thought; it was good to have companionship, particularly when one was in such dire need. "Melatonin? What does Doctor Allen recommend?"

Normally he probably would've suggested yoga and melatonin, neither could really hurt, but as she tightened her grip on his hands and their eyes met, he knew that any chance he had of supporting her right now was shot right out of the window. He was going to have to make a move or he would regret it for quite some time, and making a move risked their friendship, but so be it. "Well, it's like yoga, so similar really, except a bit more...active." Sean grinned and stepped her her side, turning her head slightly to kiss her. Part of him expected to wake up at any moment, in bed and wishing what he had just dreamed was instead reality. He didn't linger with the kiss for long, but pulled away, just enough to take off his lasses and set them on the table, smiling. "I think you need a different kind of stretching before bed, what do you think Ms. Shepherd?"

She flushed; this time the bright stain spread from her cheeks to the very tips of her ears, even creeping down the slender column of her throat. Her tongue slipped over her lips, catching the faint taste of honey he left in his wake. She swallowed hard, carefully considering her answer; it was not too late to dart toward the door, to be neatly in bed as expected when Fiona returned from her late-night shift. That was, of course, the safer option. But his offer proved too tempting to refuse, and grew only more so with every passing moment. Again her teeth worried at her lower lip, drawing a shallow line into that soft skin.

"Sean, I..." She willed her eyes to meet his own, to not let her burgeoning fear get the better of her. She had long believed honesty took precedence over all else; even now, with long shut-out emotion slowly overtaking her, she could not shut out that drive altogether. Embarrassed, she held his gaze and carried on. "It's been a while." A nervous laugh slipped free of her. But if this was not what she had come for, what had she intended? Somehow she steeled her resolve, turning in her chair to better face him. "If that's okay..." Her hand rose to his face, trembling, thin fingers tracing the hard line of his jaw. Leaning up, she kissed him again: hesitant at first, slowly gaining confidence with every moment he did not pull away.

"It's been awhile for me too Karin, don't worry." Of course Sean was aware that a guy's version of 'awhile' tended to be very different from a female's version of forever. Not that he slept around, because the truth was that he very rarely had time to sleep around between all of his classes and time he liked to spend at the temple. Sean continued to kiss her, deepening the kiss as he let his tongue slip into her mouth. Sure California was full of gorgeous beautiful people, but Sean saw something beautiful inside of Karin as well. There was a delicate nature to her, something that he just wanted to wrap his arms around and embrace. Of course it didn't hurt that her body was also to die for.

Some part of her insisted this was the worst of bad ideas; inwardly she cringed, imagining herself later telling Fee - who would undoubtedly guess what had gone on, and no mistake - she had slept with her yoga instructor, who was also her next door neighbor. It was too many cliches, too many romcom plots in a single go, and somehow it was hard to believe it was nonetheless her life. But still more frustrating was the fact that even knowing this, even feeling the pang of self consciousness as she did, more of her wanted this, wanted him, someone who didn't look at her with so much impotent worry in his eyes. So she kissed him back, leaning into him, her hands tentatively coming to rest at his hips.

Some time later...

Sean pulled his blue, green and brown striped comforter over the two of them and wrapped an arm around her, kissing her lips. That had been completely unexpected, but absolutely welcomed and desired. Karin was very special, that much was already clear to him and he hoped as they rested in his bed, that the feeling was mutual. "You are absolutely amazing in so many ways Karin. Stay here with me for the rest of the night. Do you need an alarm set for anything?"

This time, the flush already on her skin hid the stain of her embarrassment. "Don't flatter me," she said, her eyes flicking downward to the tangled sheets. Feeble protestation though it was, it was true; what she liked best in Sean was the calm he seemed to exude, the comfort she felt in his presence. She mistrusted compliments, preferring actions to words with unerring consistency, but the ease of his bearing when he was around her was something she could truly understand. She found she did not want to leave, could not bear the thought of returning to the cold and empty apartment next door. She nuzzled closer, shaking her head at the mere thought of an alarm.

"I want to stay," she whispered, feeling her heavy eyelids already beginning to droop. The idea of a dreamless night, or at least a few hours nestled next to a warm body, her own thoroughly sated and tired in a long-forgotten fashion, was already doing much to lull her into deeper relaxation. "I'll get up when you do. It'll be fine..."

Sean didn't have to be at class until noon tomorrow thankfully, and morning beach yoga... well if he happened to wake up he happened to wake up. He gave Karin a kiss and flipped over on his side, facing Karin with a grin. "I'll flatter you all I want, because I mean every single word." He yawned though, a reminder that he had been in the middle of sleep when she had knocked on his door and now he was even more tired than before. "If you have a bad dream again, wake me up okay? I'm right here for you I promise," but even as he comforted her, and promised that he would be there, he fell fast asleep sleeping next to her.
