I promised to knock
Who: Idris and Vanessa
What: Vanessa’s smoke alarm decides to be evil.
Where: Vanessa’s apartment, #205
When: 3:00 a.m. Wednesday Morning
Warnings: cursing

Vanessa had a long day at the hair salon, having had worked from open to close. By the time she had gotten home, all she had wanted to do was to sit down and pass out, but of course that never happened, she could never go right to sleep. Starved, but not in the mood for a cereal, Vanessa took a list of phone numbers off of the fridge. It was a handmade list on pink lined paper with names and numbers of various take-out restaurants. Some were crossed out and some were highlighted. She crossed out the ones she despised, and highlighted the ones that were good. She picked a random Chinese take-out number from off of the list, and ordered steamed dumplings, shrimp lo-mein and white rice.
She had to work early the next day, and wouldn’t have any time to do anything to her hair, which meant Vanessa would put her hair up in rag rollers. It took forever to do, but when you woke up the next morning, all you had to do was remove the rags and her hair was done. It made her already curly hair more uniform with tighter curls. After a glass of wine or two, Vanessa went to sleep, accidently leaving her Chinese food out on the dark cherry stained coffee table in the living-room.

At approximately 3 a.m., Vanessa was woken up by a loud beep in the kitchen. It wasn’t loud enough to say, be heard by everyone in the apartment, but Idris might have heard it. Was it an alarm clock, her microwave, cell phone? Nope, it was a smoke alarm that was very poorly placed on the top of the ceiling, near the stove. Vanessa grabbed a rickety kitchen chair and stood on it, trying to reach the smoke alarm with no luck. Not bothering to put the white unsteady chair back, she climbed up on the counter top and tried to reach the alarm. She was able to reach it, but for some reason, she couldn’t unscrew the alarm from the wall, it was completely stuck. Vanessa was unsure if she was just at a bad angle and couldn’t reach it properly, or if it just wasn’t going to come off. The beeping repeated every minute like clockwork, clearly the batteries needed to be replaced. Trying a different strategy, Vanessa grabbed the tall broom she had. Before she went back to the smoke alarm, she opened and unlocked her door, figuring someone would hear it eventually and come knocking. Vanessa tried to smack the smoke alarm off of the ceiling, definitely banging the ceiling in the process. This made the smoke alarm go wild and it started beeping very loudly over and over again.

Her hair in white rag rollers, dressed in a light pink tee-shirt shirt and little yellow ducky shorts, Vanessa was getting angry. Vanessa’s apartment was put together, for the most part. In the living-room she had a large green sofa, the dark cherry coffee table, matching end tables, and of course a decent sized television. The dvd player was still not hooked up, and the dvds were in a box in front of the dvd tower. Decorating had randomly been one of the first things she did. The living-room was decorated mostly with black and white photos of Miami and New York, but there were also random family pictures she had converted to black and white. The kitchen had a grey table with white cheap chairs, but the table itself was still covered in boxes, mostly kitchen stuff that Vanessa never used. She had decorated the kitchen with as much pink as possible.

"Well when stuck in a horrible uniform, a girl has to accessorize as much as she can to make herself feel better." She wore those socks almost every bar shift, they were an unofficial part of her uniform. Vanessa didn't want to laugh at that comment, but how could she not? She shook her head as she laughed. "You get distracted, I'll make damn sure that I come back as a ghost and haunt you until the day you die."

Oh thank GOD. She was so grateful to hear nothing, nothing except yet another hand me something demand. "The batteries are in the drawer right in front of you, can't miss them." Thank God the smoke alarm stopped, she wondered how many other people she had woken up, but she was too tired to feel bad.

"You'll have a helluva time haunting me, I bet. Probably use it as an excuse to follow me around, see what I'm getting up to during the day." Idris shot her a sly look before opening the kitchen drawer she spoke of, moving a few odds and ends around in order to get the batteries. Placing them in the correct order within the smoke detector, he replaced the cover, picking up the screwdriver one last time to tighten it.

"There. Problem solved, Vanessa. Say hello to a peaceful night's sleep." Idris stood on the foot stool again and made sure the smoke detector was properly replaced in its spot then stepped down, folding the stool for her. He looked up to admire his handiwork for a few moments, then turned his gaze to Vanessa. "Is there a specific place you want me to put this?" He picked up the foot stool and waited for her response, still reveling in the perfect quality of the silent apartment, save for their voices.

"Oh HA HA, very funny." Vanessa shook her head. This guy was just full of quirky comebacks, even at this late hour. Vanessa looked at the clock and grumbled. It was so very, very late.

"You can just leave it out here actually. There are a few cabinets I can't reach without it, and it's not in anyone's way. Thanks for helping me out Idris, I appreciate it, not that you had much choice. Don't be a stranger, but do be a stranger at this hour please." Vanessa smiled and was suddenly torn. Would a 3:30 ish quick kiss be weird? Probably. Would that stop her? Nope. She paused for only a moment or two, but leaned in to give him a quick kiss, it wasn't exactly a little peck on the lips, but it wasn't exactly a make-out fest. "Consider that payment for services rendered. Goodnight."

Idris leaned the footstool against one of the lower kitchen cupboards, grabbing his water bottle off the counter. He was intending on making the appropriate goodbyes and head back upstairs to get what little rest could be salvaged, knowing that he'd probably need an expresso in the morning; he didn't usually work until closing every night, but recently he'd been having to stay later hours due to not all of the newer staff being fully reliable. Closing and the such however wasn't an issue, but when he'd been kept awake until nearly 4 A.M. and gone to bed a couple hours later than usual, it was nothing short of a double whammy.

Suffice to say that his thoughts were heavily involved with how good his pillow would feel beneath his head. When Vanessa stopped talking and moved in for the kill, her lips met his in a surprising gesture of thanks and something else. Idris was no stranger to kissing, he rather enjoyed it as did an amazing amount of the human population. Still, there was something familiar that shocked his senses from the very moment she chose to plant the almost lingering kiss upon his mouth. There was nothing excessively sensual about the action, yet it hearkened to something deep within him that had nothing to do with the very basic beginnings of desire.

It was as strange as what he'd felt upon first speaking with her at Muldoon's, that vague notion of having already known her which hadn't left him alone the entire time they were together. This was the same, only made stronger by this new form of physical contact between the two of them. Idris subtly wet his lips after she pulled back to dismiss him. He wasn't entirely sure of what to think, deciding it was best to not focus on it right now. Sleep was much more important.

He smiled at her, pausing before taking his exit.

"Fair enough. Thanks for the water. I'll see you later." With that he left her apartment, shutting the front door behind him, leaving the locking of it up to her. Idris returned to his home, grateful that he'd get some sleep which would serve two purposes: the basic fundamentals of rest and a way to clear his mind of that odd feeling he'd received when Vanessa kissed him.

Which he hadn't minded, on second thought. Hadn't minded it at all.
