Who: OPEN
What: Trouble on the home front.
Where: Pax Letale.
When: 9:13 p.m.
Warnings: TBD.
Notes: Feel free to have your characters go with the concierge or make their way down to the lobby of their own volition. The tower-dwelling critter won’t likely be noticed for a while yet. So mix and mingle - there’s more to come!
ETA: Our volunteers have been notified of the effect the demon will have on their characters. Expect strange things to be afoot in coming threads...

There had been nothing whatsoever to indicate something was amiss: no foul weather, no maintenance crews loitering about, no meddling kids or their damnable dogs. Everything had simply worked, and then, in the blinking of an eye, it suddenly did not. In the midst of a crisp, clear summer night, Pax Letale effectively shut down. All electricity ceased, the elevator stopping - as it often had - between floors five and six, lights, power, and emergency backup failing simultaneously. The concierge rummaged for the 30,000 candlepower Maglite stashed beneath the counter, loosely gripping the brushed metal handle with more annoyance than real concern. Slowly he began making his rounds, walking from floor to floor in an attempt to make contact with, and if need be round up, the tenants entrusted for the duration of his shift to his lax, distracted brand of care.

In the darkness of the tower something stirred. On silent steps it padded to the door, slithering through the smallest of cracks on an ozone-scented wisp of smoke. It began its downward progress, forked tongue flicking at the air, seeking out the presences it knew lay just beneath its feet.

If Max were the entrepreneurial type, he would have been presented with a perfect opportunity to manipulate the hell out of his sister. Fortunately for Lily, Max was the more kindhearted sort of guy, and instead simply accepted her allowance of soda into his diet with a happy smile.

The next few words, though, tempered the smile to nonexistence. Shifting a bit under the guise of finding a more comfortable position, his free hand went up to adjust his glasses. He said nothing more on the subject, hoping that Lily would either catch his drift and drop it, or forget about it all together. She was, after all, almost half asleep.

"Really? Party games? Why can't they just fix the lights and let us go home? You know my idea of a party game is Mario Party 4, and that's obviously not happening," he subtly whined, fingers itching already for the controller that he'd left back up in the apartment. His stomach grumbled, obviously not sated by the lone twizzler pack he'd had only an hour before.

"Aw, Max," Lily murmured and she rubbed at his knee again. "Believe me, I'm sure all of the people down here would much rather be at home instead of standing around here in the dark." She slipped up to a full position, twisting on the bench to sit beside Max with her feet firmly on the ground. She threw an arm around Max's shoulder, hugging him tightly in her sloppy, sleepy haze, and rested her cheek on his shoulder.

"Hopefully the lights will be put on and we can go back upstairs. Do you have any classes tomorrow? If you don't maybe you can make up for the loss time." She rubbed his shoulder, trying to be comforting although she really didn't understand the appeal of the games her brother loved. She thought it was unhealthy to sit in front of a computer or tv for so many hours at a time but so long as Max was happy. She heard the grumble from his stomach and picked up her head, looking at her brother and fighting off the urge to brush one of his curls off his forehead. "Did you eat anything other than candy today?" She pressed her lips into a thin line, feigning annoyance, although he knew very well that she was always watching what he ate to the best of her ability.

He gave a slight, inverted smile at his sister's somewhat drunken form of affection, and leaned into the hug. The answer on his lips in response to the building management's form of tenant socialization evaporated in the trail of her question regarding his growling stomach. Whether he'd had food wasn't the question, and he knew she'd get upset if she'd known the kind of food he imbibed in when not under her careful eye - he just didn't know how to cook for himself, and fast food was, well, fast!

"Uh, yeah. Just a...some stuff, might've been a few hours ago, though. I'll eat some of that leftover pasta that's in the fridge, once we get back upstairs," he countered, then realization hit him. "Aw crap, I hope the food in the fridge isn't getting spoiled. How long have we been down here? Just a few minutes, right?"

Lily took a deep breath in and sat up fully with her arm still around Max's shoulder. She looked at him with large eyes that suddenly seemed awake and gripped his shoulder. "Oh no, the food! You know most of the stuff we have in there has no preservatives. It can't get warm or else it will start to mold."

She looked around the room with a glint in her eye, hoping to find someone who looked like they knew what was going on, but only saw more annoyed tenants. "If it's out for too much longer we're going to have to eat up as much of the food as we can when we go back up stairs."

She let out a groan and slumped slightly. She took pride in cooking healthy meals and to think they could possibly be wasted due to a power outage upset her.
