In spite of her grueling work schedule of late, Karin had not missed a single day of her workouts - unorthodox as they sometimes were - since the start of the new year. It was something she particularly prided herself on, taking great pleasure in concocting her own exercise routines from scratch or by cannibalizing snippets of workouts posted on various websites she frequented. Today's was an amalgamation of plyometrics and endurance, beginning with weighted push-ups in the sand and modified box jumps on a handrail and culminating in a long, frigid swim. Her wetsuit clung to her in the chilly salt water, her long hair dry beneath a fitted swim cap. After her first mile she rolled onto her back, breathing deep draughts of the cold air, feeling her racing heartbeat begin to slow.
Her head turned first one way, then the other, her green eyes seeking out any potential dangers in her path - surfers and swimmers in particular, as for better or worse she had never found herself especially fearful of shark attacks. Once she felt satisfied there was nothing in her path she flipped back onto her stomach, drawing one long breath before starting her second mile. By the end of the length she was thoroughly exhausted, drained in one of the most pleasing ways she knew. Slowly she began to paddle back to shore, her lungs and muscles burning with every stroke, until at last she felt the give of wet sand beneath her feet.
Slim fingers lifted to her swim cap, pulling its dripping material away. She shook her hair free, striding slowly but purposefully up the shore.
