Who: Ren and Kami
What: People watching and drawing
Where: the Lobby
When: mid afternoon
Warnings: Probably none
Notes: Ren lost his sketch book (aherm Shae, you should return it sometime), so he's had to get a new one and is trying to fill it up with pictures again.

Ren walked down the stairs. He really preferred them to the elevator. He wasn't the type to have a distrust of machines, but that one seemed to have a mind of it's own deciding when and where it would open its doors with what could only be considered a human like consideration. Meaning it would work when it damn well pleased. So stairs were fine for Ren. They were less temperamental and more functional in his mind.

He looked around the lobby. It wasn't terribly crowded, but it seemed like it was a nice day outside for the middle of winter. He shook his head as he sat down on the circular couch and crossed his legs. He would never get used to these non-winter days in the dead middle of winter. He was used to snow covering the ground and it being packed high back home. His father always hated snow, but he and his sisters had always had fun running out and playing during snow days when there wasn't any school It was odd not needing his jacket at this time of the year.

He pulled out his new sketch book from under his arm. He had given up trying to find the old one. He had torn up his apartment looking for it. It had simply disappeared and he had been forced to go down the art store and pick up a new one. He needed to fill it up. Too much blank paper bothered him for some reason. He took out his sketching pencil which had been behind his ear and set the new clean book in his lap opened to a too white page as he clenched a kneaded eraser in his other hand, softening it so it would be easier to mold into exact shapes needed as he drew.

He looked up and picked a subject objectively and started to draw, making mark after mark on the white sheet quickly, dirtying it until the graphite strokes gradually started to resemble the subject. As his subject was obviously not stationary he had to work quickly, and he took no notice that he was obviously staring very intensely, but kept drawing and erasing marks that didn't make him happy.

Ren blinked a few times but leaned back on the round couch. He picked up his sketch book again and flipped the page so that it was on a clean one. He started to sketch her as she sat down in the chair across form him. He outlined the curves of her body and the frame of the chair she sat in.

"Are you alright? You seem to be less..." He looked for the right words, "Cheerful. Has something happened?" Ren had always been a very caring kind of guy. He always wanted to help others even if he didn't really know what to do. He liked the idea of being useful.

He blinked at her question and blushed a little bit. He ducked his head, using his hair as a curtain that covered his face from her scrutiny. "Uh, ye-yeah. I guess you could say that."

Ren felt the heat rise in his face as he answered her. "I'm drawing you."

Kami checked her impulse to switch seats, to cross over and snuggle into the inviting cushion at his side, seeking warmth and companionship. His final words put a halt on any thoughts in that direction and she found herself rewarding him and his blush with a crooked, sweet smile. "That's sweet," she answered softly. "No one's ever drawn me before. Well... Not a real drawing. Caricatures at fairs don't count, right?"

Very carefully, she shifted her position in the chair. She didn't want to disrupt what Ren had drawn but her hand was already starting to show signs of pins and needles. Just the barest of motions and she felt relief, watching him with big dark eyes. "And I'm alright," she answered to his earlier question. "Just feeling a bit iffy, you know? Might be coming down with something or it's a touch of food poisoning." Her smile grew a bit more. "Don't you worry about it, Ren. Though it's so very, very sweet of you to. Thank you."

Ren shrugged as he went back to working on a drawing of her. He was still listening to her, but since she was sitting for him now he decided to start a new picture. She seemed a little restrained, but he had already realized there was something wrong or off about her today.

"If you like caricatures then it does." He glanced up and looked at her again for a second before he corrected a section that he didn't feel was right and went back to drawing the outline of her body, the curl to her hair, and the folds of her clothes.

"You should take care of yourself. You're always so busy making sure other people are being cared for, that sometimes I wonder if you are forgetting about yourself." He started to sketch out the finer details of her face, darkening the make up and outline of her eyes and putting in the natural pout of her lips.

"Would you like for me to run to the store and get you something? Orange juice maybe?"

A wry little smile had appeared on her lips at his too-true observation before she remembered that she was posing and attempted to banish it. Her face was too expressive by half, though, and the appreciation of Ren's intelligence shone warm in Kami's dark eyes. "You're so unbelievably sweet," she murmured and the words contained a strange mixture of amusement and awe. Anyone more worldly would have laughed to see Kami so charmed; she merely took it as a positive sign that something could still calm her and make her smile.

She would take what she could get at this point. The specters of plastic wands and little blue mathematics and missed periods made it very hard to think positive thoughts.

"No, I have stuff back in my apartment," she answered. "I even have some left-over vegetable soup." The mention of the soup sparked a memory and she smiled again at Ren, forgetting that the change in her mouth might send his drawing off the rails. "Did you like that soup that I gave you the other day? Did it have enough flavor?"

Ren already had her form in his head. Now he was only working on minor details that could also be left up to an artist's discretion. Artistic license they called it and Ren smiled to himself at the thought as he leaned back slightly to get a better look at his work. He almost wondered if he should create a character in his web comic based after Kami. He had already done so with Shae. Hello, bounty hunter!

He raised an eyebrow at her and shook his head. He tells her to start worrying about herself more, and then She asks him if he liked her soup. He smiled slightly at her. "It was good and you know it Kami. We both know that you are a good cook."

He wondered why she was looking for some reassurance, because that what it looked like to him. She was such a cheerful confident woman. Why would she need him to maker her feel better? Wouldn't Shae be better for that?

"Mm, thank you. It's a good thing for my work clothes that there are so many guys in this place willing to pick up my extra food." Kami paused to watch his hand move over the paper, returning his focus to the drawing after his reassurance. When he didn't look up again, she eased herself upwards to sit straighter. She paused and, not hearing any objections, she absently reached up to push one hand through her heavy, dark hair. It seemed like he didn't need her to stay as still anymore.

Hopefully, though, he still needed her somehow.

Frowning at the stupid thought, Kami unfolded herself from the chair and slipped over to the round couch Ren had claimed for himself. She moved quietly, an unconscious grace in her movements again as if soothed by Ren's attention and presence. She hesitated for a moment and then claimed a spot beside him. She was careful not to jar his arm and resisted the urge to look over his shoulder at the work developing. Artists didn't generally like to be crowded. Instead, she closed her eyes and rested back against the upright portion of the strange retro couch.

A small sigh that sounded an awful lot like contentment escaped her parted lips and Kami almost smiled. She had gauged it just right; she was not close enough to disrupt Ren's sketching but just close enough to feel his body heat. The reassurance of another living, breathing person went a long way and it took will-power to keep from moving to touch him more fully. "I promise I'm not looking," she whispered. "Only if you want to show me, okay?"
