"I don't know if there'll be snow..."
Who: Open!
What: A Hallway Holiday Gathering!
Where: Naea's apartment's open!
When: December 18, 2010 @ around 7:00 p.m.
Warnings: Well. Anything can happen here. You know this.
Notes: There's drinks and food and music. It's hard to go wrong.

While "Marshmallow World" by Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin was playing on her laptop (Viva Pandora!), she was finishing up the Swedish meatballs (that she so rarely ate, but it was her mother's recipe and it was one of the very few meat items she did enjoy) and singing along with the song with a bounce in her step. For all that had fallen on her in the past year, Naea knew things could be so much worse and it was no reason to take away some of that holiday spirit. She wanted to celebrate all the good that had been and that would be. Since moving into Pax, she'd made great friends--more than she'd ever known. She would be getting her diploma in a matter of weeks, now. She felt so lucky. Fun and happy must be had.

Small cafe-style fold-type tables were set up along the hallway with some folding chairs peppered here and there as well as in her small apartment (She promised Neil, her boss, a pan of fudge for the lending). Lights were strung around some of the table legs and around her door and wherever she could get them up. Cold appetizers sat on those tables in the hall; hot ones were left in her kitchen to stay that way. Soda and spirits were available (her boss was generous, in addition to the lovely Kami). There were cookies and candy and Gypsy was tucked away safely in Pru's place.

Rare was the occasion that Naea would dress up. And tonight, with some help from Kami, she certainly did. She felt pretty and, well feminine. Not that she had never before any other time in her life, but tonight was different somehow. The lace-up back of her dress felt... sexy. Naea wasn't entirely sure what this shindig would bring tonight, but she knew that no matter what, she would be having fun.

"Now this is how a party should be, you know?" a woman's voice said, somehow echoing Kami's very sentiment. Unlike Kami, she was from butch fashion stock, in a trim white shirt and black slacks, and what had to be Urkel's best set of red suspenders. She fished in the ice bath for only a moment, pretty quickly deciding on a Sam Adams.

The woman was looking at Kami and gave a reserved smile, while her hands sharply cracked open the cap to her beer. "At our age, these things should be small and relaxing. And you look pretty blissed out there."

A giggle answered the assessment and Kami shared an even brighter smile with the stranger. "And this is my first drink, too," she replied cheerfully. "Welcome to the perfect little party."

Then she seemed to realize the rudeness in her continuing to sit and quickly stood in a series of graceful, unfolding movements. An automatic twitch of her hips settled the full a-line skirt into a suitable state again, crinoline beneath keeping it full. Then she offered one small hand in greeting. "I'm Kami from up in six-oh-seven," she offered. "You must be kind of new here. Which means I pretty much owe you cookies." At Jay's lifted eyebrow to the comment, Kami laughed again. "It's become tradition somehow. Especially this time of year. I make more cookies than my figure can take."

The other woman put out her hand and offered a rather powerful handshake. "Name's Jay. I'll take cookies but that doesn't mean I believe you, not with you showing off your figure the way you are."

Satisfied by the handshake, Jay took a step back and drank off the top of her beer. Now, Jay had had a moment of intense focus when Kami first introduced herself by name, but it seemed as if that moment had passed. "I've been here for a few months, and then my job took me to Mexico for a little while. When did you shack up here?"

Clearly pleased by the compliment and not at all put off by the searching stare, Kami grinned as she reached back to retrieve her own bottle. She lifted it in teasing salute to acknowledge the other woman's approval of her curves. Then she took a deep sip before answering the question. "I moved in, oh, about the end of September. I love it."

She tilted her head suddenly, though, and considered Jay with a new light in her dark eyes. "So you haven't been around for the," she paused to search for the right word, "special times, huh?" She grinned; the special was all too obviously a euphemism but now Kami seemed inclined to look back with amusement. "You missed one heck of a party."

"If it's the Halloween party, I got a Tweet about it," Jay said coolly. "But I can't say I got all of the special details." To say the least. Her dearest informant must to have left out some of the finer points of that story.

Jay smirked, then bumped her hip against the table, leaning into it somewhat. "Maybe you can fill me in a bit about it, and the kind of trouble people must've been starting?" Jay's full attention remained on the other woman, body language open and with her eyes, she entreated Kami for a good story. "It's hard being left out of the loop like I've been."

Kami's nose wrinkled in a mixture of adorable amusement and awkward memory. She took a moment to consider what sort of story would be good enough for Jay, well aware that her ability to lie left a lot to be desired. Some things were private, though. Very, very private. "It was intense," she finally admitted. She brought her bottle up to rotate it between both palms and her smile went crooked and wry. "A lot of stories went around about what caused it all. I mean, when you wake up and can't remember what you did the night before..."

Kami giggled and abruptly changed her hold on the bottle, slim fingers around the neck of it. She lifted it for a quick sip and then gave her head another little shake. "What, who, all of it," she laughed. "Morning afters can be kind of rough after a party like that. Let's hope this one is calmer, hmm?"

Though Kami did not lie, still, Jay watched her body language with rapt interest. It helped communicate some of what Kami's words didn't cover.

"Well I'll hope so," she replied, amiably enough. "I'm an old soul, and can't handle a spontaneous frat party. Besides I need to be at work tomorrow, not naked in the gutter."

She took a modest sip of her beer, her eyes remaining on Kami steadfastly. "Speaking of, what do you do for money, Miss Kami?" Jay pressed her palm to the table, orienting herself into more of a lean towards the other woman. "Are you involved in Hollywood too? I know a few people in this building are."

"I'm working on it," the other woman admitted with a bright smile. "I did some off-Broadway stuff after college but came out here for a change of scenery." Still a fairly bad liar but it was close enough to the truth that Kami could keep the pretense properly. "I've been at Disney for the past, oh, six or seven months?" She gave a casual shrug but her smile remained glowing, positive as a small child seeing gifts beneath the Christmas tree. She hesitated for a moment and then, deciding that it would be alright, she sank back to sit in her chair. As a nod to the conversation, though, she remained perched on the edge and her chin lifted to keep her attention solely on Jay. "I'm dabbling in commercials now while the Mouse pays the main bills," she explained. "What about you? Not Hollywood, I'm willing to bet. Not that you don't have an amazing presence."

Jay could almost hear the approving wink in the petite woman's voice, friendly and encouraging, wanting to know more.

"Agent of truth and justice," Jay replied in an even tone. "Wordslinger, champion of logic and critical thought. I use my gifts to enlighten minds shrouded by laziness and misinformation. My eternal hunt is against prejudice, and my duty is to strike it down where it stands."

Some condensation on the bottle made her hand slick, and she wiped her palm casually on her trousers. During this, she never turned away from Kami's attention. "Also, I'm popular on the Internet."

Kami arched a dubious eyebrow and tilted her head in a way that clearly reinforced her uncertainty on Jay's claims. A smile lingered at her mouth, though; she was willing to roll with this. She sat back a bit in the chair, fingers toying with the neck of her bottle again as it rested on the small table beside her. "So you're either Batman or TVtropes," she offered. "Please, please, please be Batman. I'll lose less of my party time to you if you are."

"I am vengeance. I am the night." Jay boldly swaggered the distance between herself and the other woman, then sat on the table itself, at the corner close to Kami. She wagged her finger dramatically. "Between my detective skills and my smooth car, evil won't mess with me. I even have a Boy Wonder at my beck and call."

Jay leaned in then, and spoke to Kami in a faux whisper. "And who are you, really? The secret, fantastic part of you that isn't paid by the commercials or the big bad Mouse?"

"Isn't it the first rule of super-hero-ing that you never ever ever give out your true identity?" Kami returned with a sweet and easy grin. "You could use it against me." Then she mirrored Jay's motion forward, chin tilting up to better meet the other woman's eyes. "Or I could use it against you, hm? That old story never ends well. Especially not for the Dark Knight."

She sat back again, re-crossed her legs, and rested her hands, bottle dangling by the neck from one, over her raised knee. "Though Talia was pretty smoking hot, don't you think?"

Before Jay could offer her opinion, the elevator dinged and the doors opened. "Wow, this looks great!" came an all-too familiar voice as Jack stepped into the hall. The tall comedian was dressed as if he'd either just come in from outside or was just on his way out, in jeans and grey overcoat and a black t-shirt sporting some clever phrase or other in white letters, and carried a bottle of sparkling wine and a couple of small gift bags. He quickly zeroed in on Kami and Jay, and the happy smile he'd entered the party with quickly became a grin. "Hey, if it isn't my two favorite ladies!" With a few long strides, he approached the table, the words on his t-shirt becoming clear: I'm popular on the Internet.

"Glad you made it to the party, Jaybird!" he beamed at Jay. "I stopped by the apartment and you weren't there, so I was hoping you'd be down here. Looks like you've finally met Kami, too." With that, he turned to the woman seated behind the table. "Hey, baby doll." Jack's greeting for her was just as fond as it had been towards Jay, but with a slightly different, warmer quality. "Got another of those beers for ol' Jack?"

Jay greeted him with a high-five that lingered into a bit of a bro-shake, then let go and sat back on the table. She raised up her beer in an apparent cheers too, and seemed about to sip it, though behind the glass she hid an expression like that of a kid caught doing something naughty. Except this little kid didn't regret what she did at all.

"Was just getting to know your Kami a little, Jackrabbit." Jay turned along with Jack to look down at the lady in question. "So what do you think about her? Is she more a Catwoman or a Talia?"

"Hmm." Jack made a brief show of pondering this deepest of questions. The your Kami remark Jay made had gone right past him. "You know, I'd have to say Talia. She's a woman of mystery, very complex and devastatingly gorgeous. Plus, she gets lots of sexy outfits. Catwoman's hot, but she's batshit crazy."

He tilted his head at Kami and gave her a cheeky smirk. "What's your opinion, Kami? You'd get the Batman either way."

"Mmm, and isn't that the point some nights?" Kami giggled and flowed to her feet, leaving her cardigan still dangling from the back of her chair and her wine cooler resting on the table. "He really had weird taste in girls, though, don't you think?" she asked mildly as she crouched at the cooler and plunged one bare arm into the icy depths, fishing around with the faint background slushing noise of the contents. Another loose curl came free at her energetic search for drinks and tickled the side of her neck until Kami gave a little one-shouldered shrug in an attempt to shift the hair. It helped only slightly and she gave up, moving her free hand back to wind it up haphazardly back into her updo, exposing the smooth, slightly golden expanse of her neck and shoulders again.

Finally, Kami made a faint noise of discovery and lifted out a amber, long-necked bottle. She lifted it high to show Jack and a few beads of cold water slipped down the smooth sides, dripping back into the cooler below. She grinned up at him but there was no approval-seeking in the look; she knew she had what he wanted. In so many ways, really. Standing once more, she handed it to him and then shook off her hand in an attempt to lose the water from her hand. She smiled at Jay. "Pretty much every girl Batman looked at was bonkers," she continued as if there hadn't been a pause. "If it's all the same to you, I'll be Batgirl. That way I can be sexy, smart, and sane. Well, mostly."

She hesitated and considered it again. "Though, okay, Talia is way tempting."

Kami's intriguing display, and the way she had looked up at Jack, left Jay a bit stunned. But the effect vaporized at the mention of Batgirl. Instead a cold, silver glint crossed Jay's eyes.

"Tempting in only one sense," she then said, rather briskly. She put her bottle down on the table, her hand still resting on the neck. "At least Catwoman has agency and her own identity. Batgirl and Talia have the sex and the brains, yet remain willingly tethered to Batman's image, or else his-"

"AHHHH. MAN, NOTHING LIKE A NICE COLD ABITA," Jack interrupted VERY loudly. "I LOOOOVE ME A GOOD BEER, DON'T YOU, JAY? Thank you, Kami, you know just what ol' Jack likes." He shot her a cheeky grin and a wink, finishing his beer in one draught.

Then he remembered part of the reason he was here. "Oh, hey, I have something for you." He fumbled with his burden, shifting the wine bottle from one arm to the other. "I can't stick around too long," he continued as he struggled not to drop the wine, "got a gig at the Comedy Store tonight." He finally remembered to put down the empty beer bottle. "Oh yeah huh." Now that his hand was free, he separated out one of the two little gift bags he was carrying and held it out to Kami with a smile that was warm and smug and fond. "Merry Christmas, baby doll."

Kami's eyes went wide as she accepted the bag with slightly shaking hands. She caught her reaction, though, almost immediately and steadied herself, bringing a sweet smile of disbelief to the forefront as she glanced up from the bag to the man in front of her. "Really, Jack? For me?" she asked quietly. "That is so very, very sweet." A faint flush touched her cheeks and she gave him a lop-sided grin, Jay's burgeoning tirade forgotten in the midst of his gesture. "But I didn't get you anything."

Jack shook his head, wordless argument to her protest, and he motioned back to the bag. Sighing, mouth still curved in a smile, Kami obeyed and started picking the tissue paper from the bag delicately, careful to set it on the table beside them. When she found a small box buried within, she made a soft noise of discovery before drawing it out and setting the bag aside. She glanced up at Jack again curiously, then sideways at Jay.

Chewing slightly on her lower lip, Kami opened the box but even the sensation of teeth on her lip could not quite control the small gasp that escaped her in surprise. Nestled within the box on a knot of cotton, a delicate pendant sat, the silver glinting a bit in the hallway light. The turquoise almost glowed with warm vibrancy, the color stark against the white cotton. "Oh, Jack," Kami breathed. Her eyes widened again in surprise. Just looking at the colors and the shape seemed to warm her from within, a sense of sweet rightness that no other piece of jewelry had ever given her before.

She reached out a finger to stroke one of the turquoise pebbles and felt a jolt of electricity straight through to her toes. She gasped and swallowed hard before looking back up at Jack. "It's gorgeous," she whispered. "Thank you."

Startling out of the trance suddenly, Kami looked to Jay and grinned. Neatly, she slid a finger beneath the delicate silver chain and held it up for the other woman to see. "He's got taste, doesn't he?" she laughed. "Who wants to help me put it on right this instant?"

"I'll do it," Jay said, and put down her beer. She quite forgotten what she was upset about too - there was something incredibly gorgeous about the necklace, and also in how Kami's face lit up at the sight of it. How had her Jack struck on so much of a jackpot, both in the gift and the girl?

Jay got up and walked around behind the other woman, only a little bit disappointed that there was no hair or clothing for her to push off of Kami's warm shoulders first. She separated the clasp, and then paused as she sent a cheeky glance to her roommate. "So you can better admire it from where you are standing, right Jack?"

"Absolutely," Jack agreed with an equally cheeky smirk. "Best seat in the house." He watched as Jay took her own sweet time stringing the pendant's silver chain around Kami's neck. "Ohhh yeah," he nodded in approval. "That looks so good on you. I'm really glad you like it."

It shouldn't have been possible but Kami's smile grew even brighter and she struck a dramatic, saucy pose with a giggle the moment Jay had closed the clasp. The pendant sat at the hollow of her throat, quickly warming to her skin and strangely light. More than anything else, it felt write which was strange because, while she loved silver, she had always tended to put down the silver/turquoise combination as trite. Too many years of kitschy jewelry for the tourists breezing through Flagstaff, she had always figured. This, though, was perfect.

Without thinking, she took a step forward and brushed the briefest of kisses over Jack's cheek. "Thank you," she whispered. "It's perfect."

Then she spun on her heel and gave Jay a beaming, cheeky little pose to display all the charms on view. "Thank you so much for your help and, well... What do you think?"

Jay crossed her arms and sighed in an unnecessarily dramatic fashion. "I'm a writer, not a poet. I don't know all of the words it'd take to describe how ravishing you are. The moon light reflecting off a serene pool, wild beauty of horses running through fields, blah blah."

But in actuality, she did go for a better look of the necklace. She leaned closer, brushing the pendant with her fingertips in a soft, nearly reverent touch. But then she put her hand at the back of Kami's neck, and Jay's gaze went squarely into the other woman's.

"Jack's a special man, but don't let him take you places that don't feel right for you," she whispered in warning. Her face was a stone cold mystery, and her eyes unwavering and serious. But in the next instant she smiled and clapped Kami's shoulder, spoke the next part much louder so Jack could hear.

"I think I'm done for the night. Make good choices," Jay said, as she turned to leave, "-and don't do anything Jack would do."

"She loves me," Jack informed Kami, watching Jay as she wandered off. "She would have killed me stone dead by now if she didn't." His remark was wry and self-deprecating, but there was a hint of something strangely flat in his expression. He wondered what Jay had said to Kami.

"Anyway, I should try to find my other giftee before I head out," he continued, the odd flatness gone. "Think I saw her head into the apartment with Shae..." He looked down at Kami with a warm, fond smile. "You have fun tonight, baby doll. I know you will -- you're in your element."

Leaning forward, he lightly pressed his lips against her cheek, lingering for maybe a fraction of a second longer than a casual goodbye kiss would have lasted. "Merry Christmas, Kami," he murmured, then turned almost reluctantly and headed toward Naea's apartment.
