Who: OPEN
What: Pax Letale Halloween Bash 2010!
Where: The Empty Grave
When: 6:30-9 p.m.
Warnings: Likely any and all. Enter at your own risk.
Notes: This is the party post for all Pax residents and guests in attendance, right up to the moment of transformation. Use your subject line to denote your character's location (i.e. 'By the door,' 'at the bar,' 'on the dance floor,' 'in a coat closet.')

The air in Pax Letale crackled with possibility all day Sunday. All week, excited chatter had filled the hallway and the forums; costumes had been carried in and out; speculation on what the party would entail were whispered. By Sunday, the energy surrounding the event held so much promise that it hardly seemed like just a Halloween party anymore; it was something more, and that sense was nearly kinetic.

The main ballroom in the haunted mansion that was The Empty Grave was expansive, but guests had already begun to arrive. When they entered, they found lush opulence withered and faded; grandeur, but with an eerie pall over it. It was perfect for Halloween - dark, ghostly, with a twisted Victorian edge to it. The bar was fully stocked, trays of h'ors d'oeuvres passed around and more substantial fare offered on ornate platters along one wall. A DJ was already spinning a mix of music that somehow managed to fit the theme and appeal to the eclectic demographic he was serving, and attractive (if ghastly) characters added flavor to the already colorful room.

The night had begun.

"Little of both?" Cowboy Rick said. "Meander around, talk to everyone who gives that outfit of yours a good long stare." He grinned, and lifted his chin towards the bar. "I'm gonna make my way to the drinking hole. Can I wrangle anything up for the gentleman and the little fish-lady?"

Against her better judgment, she was here. When she'd first heard about the party, Brighid had decided she had no real interest in attending. Parties had never really been her thing; she was much more prone to sit in a corner and observe those around her than she was to actually getting up and carrying on. Besides which, a party hardly seemed a proper token of reparation for the changes to the building that had wrecked her feeling of security. And perhaps it was that same damaged sense of security, or maybe just some kind of ingrained superstition, but there was something about the fact that the party was being thrown on this night in particular that unsettled her. Time and reading through others' forum posts and the general sense of excitement in the building had weakened her resolve, though, so she'd gone with Kami to get a costume. The blue dress and white pinafore were more of the classic Alice than many of the costumes they had seen; both were full-length and fell below her knees rather than stopping short a foot (or more) above. She also wore white stockings and black Mary Jane flats, though she had passed on the blonde wig. Still, Brighid thought it a reasonably good costume for all it had been a last-minute affair.

She'd been sitting at a table situated so she could observe comings and goings at the bar, on the dance floor and near the entrance. Kami, with whom Brighid had shared a cab ride to the party, had done her best to make sure the younger girl was comfortable and happy before she'd headed off for the dance floor. Brighid had watched her companion's dance with Samuel with some bemusement, hoping the flirtation was purely innocent; there was something about Samuel and Lia which kept the sometime foes inexplicably linked in Brighid's mind, and she was more than a little relieved when Kami's attention shifted after a single dance.

It wasn't until some time later, when she observed Navid and a woman she assumed was his Zara enter that Brighid relinquished her spot. She had spent the minutes pondering the costumes of those around her, and now added the couple she was approaching to her mental speculation. There was another man standing with them, a Western cowboy she thought might be Rick, another neighbor from her own floor whom she believed she had greeted on the forums though perhaps not yet in person. As she stepped closer and heard him refer to Zara as "the little fish-lady," at least part of the costume clicked.

"A mermaid, then," she said when she reached them. "And Uncail is a love-struck sailor?" Brighid smiled a bit shyly at them before encompassing the third of their party. "You're Rick, yes? You live across the hall in 706, I think."

With a shake of his head Navid waved off Rick's offer. For the time being he was far more interested in getting a better feel for the party and the guests who had attended; he knew too few of them, and though he realized his hectic work schedule was largely to blame he couldn't help but feel he had fallen lax somehow. So deep was his contemplation of these social niceties that he nearly missed altogether his friend's approach. He smiled at the sight of her, a dark-haired Alice modestly dressed - and therefore almost entirely out of sync with the bulk of her fellow attendees.

"Eric and Ariel," Navid corrected, chuckling quietly as he did. "Brighid," he said, leaning down to pull her into a brief, one-armed hug. "You're lucky to have Rick nearby. He's pretty useful in a pinch. He did most of the work fixing that leak in the stairwell." He looked to Zara, then, his smile widening to a pleasant near-grin. "Zara, this is Brighid. Her family are very dear friends."

"No thanks, Rick," she said with a little smile. When Navid introduced her to the new addition to their groupd, Zara smiled broadly. "Hi, Brighid," she said, and then, careful of her wig, she reached out to give the younger girl a warm hug. "It's so nice to finally meet you. I've heard a lot about you." Upon releasing the girl, she looked at Brighid's ensemble and said,

"Also, I really like your costume. I'm a fan," she grinned.

Rick wasn't so bold as to hug Brighid, but he did play-shoot his guns at her and grinned widely. "Brighid? You got two fans then. I nearly thought you were an actress from the park, cause you even have that little shy-girl look down pat!"

Then he laughed heartily, and continued on his way out towards the bar. He waved goodbye to the three with his fake guns still in hand. "Hey, I'll meet back with ya'll later!" he called, and was gone towards the crowd.

Little shy-girl look? Brighid’s brow furrowed as she watched their departing neighbor, then she shook her head and turned back to Navid and Zara, the remark carefully tucked away for further consideration at a later time. “Thanks,” she offered them another smile as she touched the folds of her dress. “Kami, another girl from the building, helped me pick it out. I didn’t see anything quite like yours, though, Zara. Did you make it yourself?”
