Entry tags:changing woman, morrigan

Who: Prudence & Kami
What: Cupcakes and awesome FX
Where: Pru's apartment, 209
When: 10/29/10
Warnings: Links to some gross pictures. Everything is fake, btw, but if someone doesn't like that kind of stuff, here's your warning.

Her apartment was still fairly not unpacked - maybe forty percent, what with the numerous cardboard boxes still lining the walls. Major pieces of furniture had been attended to first, those being a couch and coffee table, a projector for screening movies on one wall rather than a television (Pru liked the old-school feeling it had, almost like a drive in theater), and her desk in one corner with her elaborate desktop all set up, currently flashing a sleep screen of various green numbers and symbols not unsimilar to those found in the Matrix movies. Music, soft drowning symphonies that were similar to funeral dirges, was emanating from the speakers, helping to set an atmosphere. And this was just the living room - her victorian queen-sized bed had been assembled, along with matching dresser and nightstand, in the small bedroom.

Of course, the items shrank the room down to almost a matchbox, but Pru didn't mind. The items were hand-me-downs from her mother, items that had been passed down in the family and had, until recent, been stored away and were once being considered to be sold until the money from her father's untimely death had appeared. The items had history and Pru loved the idea that she could lay a hand on the headboard and know she was touching something real. Something solid that was full of stories.

Mostly, though, upon viewing Prudence's apartment, one could speculate that the items were a little on the macabre side. Darker colors, mostly reds, grays, and browns, were rampant but had a soothing effect. Of course, little decoration was up, but one could surmise that the remaining cardboard boxes would remedy that issue. Pru was digging into once such box, bubble wrap and styrofoam peanuts scattered on the floor, when she heard a knock at her door - thinking of those she'd spoken to on the forum, she wondered for a moment as to who it might be. Another thought, and a quick sniff of the air that revealed the scent of chocolate, answered that question and a smile painted itself on her face as she took a few steps slowly and gracefully in stockinged feet (her outfit one of her usual, hair in a loose braid down her shoulder) to the door, opening it to see who was on the other side.

Kami stood there and, as the door opened further, she brandished both her glorious smile and a plate of decadent chocolate cupcakes in front of her like siege weaponry. "Hello!" she chirped, more sunshine vibrating in her than possibly existed outside Prudence's windows. "I hope you were serious when you asked for chocolate and I hope you didn't just mean milk because these suckers put a dent in both my chocolate and chili stores."

The woman standing in front of her was as though someone had taken an spark plug and given it human form - Pru vaguely wondered if the woman had walked or bounced down the hall to 209. Not that it bothered her, Pru had known some fairly extroverted personalities in her time, but she was a stark contrast to what Pru was.

For a moment she wondered (as she often did when meeting other women with more outgoing personalities and better cooking skills) if she was what her mother had wanted in a daughter, but then shook the thought from her mind. She and Mary Collins had a good relationship, if somewhat strained. But it was working, for what it was.

"I never joke about chocolate," she responded in an amused tone. Opening the door a little wider to invite her inside, she held it for a few moments before closing it once the woman was inside. Pru paused, staring at a wall for a moment as she considered what she might hang there. One of her horror movie posters? A photo of one of her recent jobs? Maybe some family photos? And then she came back to the thought that there was someone else in the room with her, oh yeah, the nice woman who was bringing her cupcakes.

"Kami, right?" It was definitely a distinct name, and coupled with the previous discussion on cupcakes, Pru was fairly certain that she had the right name. "If you want, go ahead and set them on the coffee table. My portfolio's around here somewhere..." She motioned at the short, black table in front of the couch, and then padded back over to the box she had previously been digging in.

"Mmhm, Kami Boisvert, six-oh-seven." Obediently, the petite brunette brought the treats straight to the table. Once they were safely set down, however, she straightened again and did a slow pirouette to inspect the room. It was dark, sure, but the pieces were classic, heavy, and fascinating. Prudence's styling sense was miles away from her own. She wondered how everything would look when the boxes stood empty. Reaching out, she trailed fingers over the butter-soft leather covering the arm of the sofa. "I love these old pieces," she announced, smiling in Pru's direction. This time the expression radiated with about half the initial wattage, more gentle and sweet. "They always have such character to them. Better than Ikea any day, huh?"

A few moments of digging through the box produced a plastic binder - Pru knew she needed to upgrade to something a little nicer, but until then this was sufficing nicely. There was no coversheet, and instead just images separated by spacers that organized it by project. She looked up to grace Kami with a pleased smile regarding the compliment on her furniture.

"Thanks. Ikea... I could never do that. It's impersonal, and...well, they just all look like legos to me. Never was a big fan of legos." She padded back over to where Kami was and plopped down on the couch.

"You're not squeamish, right? 'Cause I can get you a bowl or something... Or the bathroom is just right over there," she pointed towards a closed door that had a nail coming out of it for signage that would be hung there later. "Just, I'm not trying to brag or anything, I've had people throw up before with this stuff." She set the portfolio on the coffee table - she wasn't trying to drum up excitement, sincerely not wanting to upset Kami's stomach. Especially since there was food involved, and a lot of people couldn't eat and look at these pictures at the same time.

Pru reached for one of the cupcakes, her stomach like steel at this point. Taking a nibble, she made a yummy sound and dug in a little deeper with her teeth. "These...are great. I might have to put your number in my emergency book for whenever I have a sugar craving."

Kami laughed and settled herself into the sofa, ankles crossing as she scooted to perch on the very edge after a moment's thought. "That's fine with me. I almost always have more baked goods around than I really need." She watched Pru enjoy the cupcake, a faint smile of pleasure curving her lips. She loved it when others approved of her baking; it gave her a warm, light feeling in her stomach.

Then she turned to look at the binder sitting on the table and leaned forward, one wrist resting on her knee as the other hand reached for the binder. "I think I'll be okay. I ate lunch ages ago," she answered the earlier question. Then she looked sideways at Pru, fingers hesitating on the plastic. "Is it really that bad?"

"Bad isn't a word I would use, I received excellent grades on most of these pieces..." She bent forward to flip open the binder and then realized that wasn't what Kami was talking about. "Oh, um, no, just I've had people with weak stomachs look at them and yeah. They're...creative?"

Using one hand while the other still held the cupcake, she flipped it open to some of her stand-alone projects from school. The first that came to light was of a girl standing with her throat cut open, barbed wire lining the sides like untied stitches.

"This was just a random project, we had to select a body part to utilize..." Pru took another bite of the cupcake, delicately, chewing entirely before continuing her explanation. "Several hours of synthetic skin, spirit glue, fake blood, and some chicken wire... I keep showing this one off especially, I really want someone to use it in one of their movies."

Kami stared at the picture with wide, dark eyes and her mouth hung open just slightly in a totally honest gut reaction. Fortunately, there was no sudden green cast to her skin or worrying noises to accompany the expression and Pru watched as Kami leaned forward to better inspect the photograph. "Wow," she breathed.

Then she sat back again and lifted a hand to push her hair out of her eyes. A strange little laugh escaped her and she turned to grin at Pru. "You are amazingly talented," she announced. "I can totally see why you worried about my stomach." She motioned to the picture with a hand but did not look again. She didn't need to; the gore was imprinted in her mind. Admiration shone in Kami's heart-shaped face, though, clearly impressed. "It's so fresh looking. How do you not have a job with the top companies yet?"

The smile on her face was one of intense pride at Kami's compliments. Pru took another sensibly sized bite of the cupcake, one hand held delicately to her mouth to prevent crumbs from scattering everywhere.

"Thank you - honestly, I wanted to do some freelance first, just to build up my portfolio. There are always those indie projects that get so little attention, and I would love to have my name attached to them." She blinked, and then quirked her mouth. "Of course, finding said indie projects is the difficult part." She finished her sentence with another bite of cupcake, and then looped fingers around the page. Before turning, she posited her own question for Kami.

"So you said you worked in theater?" It was pure natural curiosity, and she glanced at Kami after the punctuation. Then she looked back to her portfolio, flipping the page over to reveal close-ups of knees that had been worn down to the bone, the skin having been rolled up like stockings and held up by garters of all things.

"Mmmhmm." Kami peered down at the new picture for a few long moments and then lifted her eyes again to meet Prudence's. She smiled and, if it was less brilliant than before, the other woman had no way of knowing. After all, few people provided the extreme level of wattage Kami could (and frequently did) on a regular basis. "My degree is in that and I've been working here or there since graduation." She paused for a split second and then gave a little laugh. "I'm between real parts, though. I had an audition for some voice work the other day."

She reached out a hand and touched one slim finger to the page in front of them. "Where do you get these ideas?"

Prudence quickly filled her mouth with another bite, but she was running out of cupcake. How did she come up with her ideas? Just...thoughts that wandered through her mind. Sometimes the visions that she had about others, the accidents and things that she saw. Her face faltered for a moment, though she quickly pasted a faux smile over it.

"Just, ah, I don't really know," she offered clumsily, after swallowing the bite. She finished the cupcake and carefully licked a finger that had been smeared with chocolate. "Random thoughts. Watched too many horror films as a kid, is probably what my mom would say." No, that wasn't what her mother would say - her mother would probably refuse to talk about the subject. Pru was fairly interested in skirting around the issue as well.

"So what have you done so far? Acting wise, I mean. There has to be a lot around here. Any movies I might have heard of?"

"No movies. I haven't been out here long enough for that." Reaching out, Kami claimed one of the cupcakes and studied it for a moment before peeling the wrapper down very slightly all around its perimeter. Then she swiped one finger at the very edge to steal a bit of the rich chocolate frosting. Popping the finger in her mouth to lick it off, she crossed her eyes. "I did some work in New York City, though," she answered when her mouth was free again. "Off-Broadway stuff."

Kami peeled the wrapper down a bit further. "I've only been out here about six months so... Not so much yet."

Pru gave a sage nod of her head; she could certainly commiserate. Hollywood was certainly bursting at the seams with unemployed actors - sometimes it seemed like they lined the street corners, some with a fresh look of hope on their faces while others had been trampled on enough to have lost such an expression. Pru had been somewhat lucky so far, getting some jobs here or there, but since hers was a technical position...well, honestly they weren't that much easier to come by, nor did they all pay well. But she'd gotten a few here or there.

Reaching forward, she flipped another page in the book, this time thankfully coming to a more mundane picture of a woman sewing her arm back together. A simpler piece, but certainly as realistic as the rest.

"Any favorites in what you've done so far?" She asked after looking over the picture - she could spot a few things she could have done a little better, or simply things she would have done differently, but all in all she couldn't complain about her own work. Her hands fell to fold in her lap, glancing up to look at Kami.

Kami was once again involved in unwrapping her cupcake, eyes focused on the treat, and there was a long pause before she looked up again to deliver a painfully adorable, quirky smile. "I got to be Katherine in Taming of the Shrew back in college," she offered. Then she giggled and sat back further in the couch, idly drawing one leg up under her in a move so slow that it was easy to spot the dancer within the curvy form. Then she looked at Prudence sideways, mouth still a warm curve. "Here, though, it was a whole new world," she added, tone hinting at a riddle.

"Do you want to work on just horror flicks or are you up for some sci-fi and action, too?" she asked in quick succession. "I'm just wondering because these are totally creepy Resident Evil things. Really wonderful and better than a lot of those slasher movies you see."

Though familiar with the Shakespearean play, she'd never given the playwright more than what he was due. Her tastes had run a little more Gothic in the literature department, but she wasn't going to knock something that was a staple for most actors. Kami's movements were sleek and refined, potentially from training - Pru wondered at the thought for a moment, but before she could comment Kami's next words made a brow lift.

"Right now, pretty much anything," she responded to the question, thinking over Kami's words. She knew she'd heard the phrasing before, but couldn't quite place it. "I'm honestly more of a Silent Hill fan, and I am trying to get into the gaming side of horror, but there's a lot to choose from. Dead Space was amazing..." She trailed off, recognition suddenly lighting up her eyes.

"Aladdin! That's what that thing you said is from. Are you trying out for the play at California Adventure?"

"I was already in it." Kami quickly finished the last bite of her cupcake, licked her fingers, and then squirmed forward again on the couch. Her nimble fingers quickly folded the paper into a neat triangle and she stretched to drop it on the plate. Then she snagged the binder and drew it back to spread over her lap. "Rick in seven-oh-six is Aladdin. If you like musicals, you should go see him. He's darling and very talented."

Kami turned a page. "Have you done any stage work or just film?" she asked, neatly drawing the conversation back to Pru's career once more.

Pru made a small 'o' with her mouth, but Kami's quick handling of the topic and subsequent dropping of it gave her a big enough hint to leave well enough alone. She wasn't huge on musicals, aside from ones that fit into her sphere of interest (Sweeney Todd, the original though she had nothing against Tim Burton, Little Shop of Horrors, and not the movie version that edited out the last song, that sort of thing). The next page that Kami flipped to was a pair of shoes made up to look like they'd been created out of skin. Another random project, humorously so. Pru knew she had the shoes lying somewhere around in the apartment, probably packed away safely in one of her yet unopened boxes.

"Just film - I'd love to do a play, if the right one came along. I'm a little miffed that I missed out on Repo! The Genetic Opera while it was touring around; the movie really needs more exposure," she answered. "There have to be similar projects around here, I'm sure. Just a matter of looking for them." She adjusted on the couch, though not as smoothly as Kami had. Pru decided to switch the subject once more, to something that she was sure would put both of them at ease.

"So what will you be dressing up as for the Halloween party? You're going, right?"

That was the right path to take, clearly, and Kami's face lit up in another bright smile. "Oh, totally!" Pictures forgotten, she twisted to meet Pru's eyes and mischief was clear in the look. Reaching up, she tucked a dark lock of hair behind her ear while the other hand indicated the binder on her lap with a vague motion. "Nothing like this, though," she admitted. "I pretty much belong to the pretty dresses category of Halloween costumes. Any excuse to be a princess, you know?"

She relaxed back into the couch a bit, one leg again bending to tuck beneath her, and her attention never wavered. "It's really nice of them to make things up to us, I think," she continued. "Though... I'm still not sure how it happened and I still get the creeps a bit when I think about it all. I mean, who expects instant redecoration? But a party? With an open bar? Who are we to argue?" She paused and laughed. "And I'm going as an Indian princess which is probably really, really non-PC of me but the dress was too cute. I guess I could always play it off as Pocahontas since we're in the shadow of Disney. What about you? Please say you're going!"

Kami's changed mood put a small smile of triumph on Pru's face - she was still working out the niceties of social interaction, but every now and again she got it right. Her head tilted a little as she listened to the other woman talk about the events prior that Pru had only heard a few rumors about: the building shape-shifting, supposedly an elaborate prank on the inhabitants? This was Pru's first apartment (outside of the dorms, if one counted that) so she was crossing her fingers that the manager or landlord or whoever was responsible would kick that particular habit, as exciting as it might seem.

"Of course I am - I'm so new, I haven't had time to look up what else is going on around here," she assured Kami. "I have a costume ready and everything, though it's more of a thrown together affair than anything I'd usually come up with. No princesses for me, unfortunately...I've never been that kind of girl." She added a smile, though the statement was more sad than anything else. Stop it with the underlying tension from your mother, Prudence, she mentally scolded herself.

"So...what exactly happened? I heard a few things, about the building changing, but I'd rather hear about it first hand."

"Well," Kami drawled, settling even further into a comfortable tangle on her side of the couch. "We don't know, really, and that's the truth. I'm not even sure when exactly it happened and I was awake. I was baking, in fact." She managed to lift one shoulder in a vague shrug and her smile was crooked and wry. "All I know is that my entire floor went all Clash of the Titans but other floors did other things. There was Tomb Raider and Beowulf and..."

She trailed off, dark eyes going a bit unfocused as she remembered the eighth floor and standing there with Jack. The warmth and safety had been unreal, all enveloping and natural. Surrounded by the almost familiar blankets and headdresses, she had a moment of unreality where it had been a different place, somewhere that she belonged. Jack, too. The voices whispered in fond remembrance and she almost reached for Jack to draw him close, laughter in her throat.

She had been lucky to escape.

Giving her head a little shake, Kami forced a laugh. "It lasted a week and then it went away like it had never been here," she finished. "Nothing stayed. One of the girls, Dorcas, I think, took pictures but nothing was on her camera a week later."

Her mouth fell into a hard line as she listened to Kami's descriptions - the change certainly sounded interesting, and again she lamented not being present for it.

"Ren said he took some pictures," she replied. "Ren, the guy from the fourth floor? I met him in the elevator. He said pretty much the same thing as you." She had noted Kami's brief mental intermission, though decided to not pry. Pru had already done that into one area and she wasn't sure if this would be an appropriate thing to delve into.

"That's so weird, then. I can't imagine why the pictures wouldn't take, not unless they dropped some kind of...what are they called, these electric impulses they can send out. I think it's a military thing. But why they'd go to all that trouble to change the halls and then stop people from saving evidence... Makes no sense." She thought to herself for a moment and then laughed. "But I'm sure you're all more confused about it than I am. I don't suppose weird things like that happen around here often, yeah?" The last bit was a joke, meant to be taken lightly.

Kami gave a little shrug but her smile had returned at Prudence's wise decision to let things be. The movement helped rid her of the lingering memory and she settled back in her seat with a renewed sense of composure. While she could not forget what happened, she was damned if she was going to let it rule anything about her. Case in point, there was a question to answer.

"Hmm, depends on what you call weird," Kami said musingly. "The building kind of has a weird vibe all over. Not bad. Just weird." She cast her dark eyes towards the ceiling as if she could read something there. Then she giggled. "It's nice, though. You can't beat the location or the price with a stick." Dropping her chin again, she studied Prudence's face curiously. "Do you like it here so far?"

She could agree on that - the part about the building having an odd atmosphere. When she'd walked into the lobby for the first time, going to an apartment viewing, it was almost like...well, maybe she'd been there before? When she knew for a fact that she never had. Maybe that had had a little influence on her decision to move into the location, but Kami was right, beachfront property didn't come by this price often, if at all. There was usually a catch. She gave a nod to Kami's question.

"I do - it's only been a few days, but it's a great apartment, the few people I've met so far are perfectly nice, and work is never too far away. Eventually I want to head over to the 'haunted spot'," and she did air quotes to emphasize that little phrase, "by the beach and see what that's all about. I love things like that. Plus there's still the whole area to explore, so...no complaints here." She smiled as she talked.

"I'm so glad." Kami's luminous smile only served to reinforce her words and she reached up absently to push a lock of dark hair behind her ear. Then she tipped her head to one side like a curious bird and the smile melted into something more cunning and coy. "Exploration, you said?" she repeated in a fair imitation of innocence. "Are you going to arrange a party or are you more a lone wolf adventurer ala Indiana Jones?"

One dark brow arched and a playful smile slid over her lips.

"Why, is that your subtle way of saying you're interested in going with? It is usually best to do findings in groups - backs up whatever one person says happened. I mean, I've got a digicam and a recorder, but most hauntings are usually only felt physically. Hot and cold spots, breezes, sometimes voices - very few things that technology can reliably capture." Pru realized that she'd gone off on something of a tangent and gave a small laugh.

"In any case, I'd love for you to be the Sallah to my Indiana, if you don't mind being a sidekick. If Sallah counts as a sidekick, I mean, hah," she amended, unsure. It was that or the kid, and Pru was fairly certain that Kami would dislike being compared to a little boy. Not that being compared to a hefty, Egyptian man was much better...

Kami laughed and Pru was reassured immediately that the other woman took no insult in her analogies. Nose wrinkling, Kami shook her head but her smile remained good-natured and amused. "I don't know about being a side-kick but I would definitely have to bow to your expertise," she answered cheerfully. "I've never really done anything like that. Unless you count ouija boards during some thirteen year old sleep-overs and I would swear to this day that Kelly was dragging that thing around to spell out Todd's name."

She waved her hand a bit as if to indicate the great unknown and winked. "Though I warn you that I've got one heck of a scream in me," she added.

A smile creased Pru's face at Kami's laugh - with all of her awkwardness, she was glad she hadn't managed to distance her fellow apartment mate. Pru knew she wasn't that terrible with social graces, but sometimes people were offended by the simplest things.

"Ouija boards," she replied, giving a little shiver. "After I saw The Exorcist, I never wanted to touch one.

"But you know, if you've got a good scream in you, maybe you should try out for some horror films," she added, reaching forward to grab another cupcake from the plate. She took a bite and swallowed. "You said you're between projects right now, why not give it a shot? 'Tis the season," she added, playfully smirking. She felt completely at ease in this woman's company, and was eagerly taking another bite when a beeping noise started from the cellphone sitting on the coffee table. Pru's eyes went wide for a moment, then recognition calmed her.

"Uh, I'll be right back," she said, giving Kami a smile as she set the partially-eaten cupcake back on the coffee table and walked over to the bathroom. Leaving the door open a crack, she popped open the medicine cabinet that held all of her prescriptions and selected three, pulling out a few different colored pills. And what would she think of me if she saw all of this? Pru wondered glumly to herself. Just a reminder of her "condition", something she rarely wanted others to see. She ran the tap, taking a handful of water to down the pills and then put the back of her hand to her mouth for a moment until she felt put back together.

"Sorry about that," she said, hopefully cheerily, as she re-entered the room. She stopped halfway and glanced around at the boxes; not too much more, and not too long before the apartment would be finished.

If Kami had any questions about the alarm and sudden disappearance of her hostess, she kept them to herself and smiled at Pru the moment she returned. Then, seeing the other woman hesitate, she shifted on the couch. An expert wiggle and squirm put her up on her knees and Kami half-crawled to the opposite end of the couch, bracing her hands against the arm there and cocking her head to one side like a curious bird as she watched Pru survey the boxes. Suddenly, she pushed up and straightened into an easy kneel on the cushions beneath her. Her hands moved to indicate the boxes. "Do you need help with anything?" she asked. "I can do things other than screaming, dancing, and acting."

Her eyes scrunched up with her widening smile. "By the by, thank you for that idea. I never really thought about horror movies because, well, I don't want to get known for running around in my skivies and screaming and falling over logs. Why do girls look back in those movies? Are they all lobotomized?"

Pru smiled widely and laughed quietly - Kami's offer was more than welcome.

"Um, yeah, I could use some help putting up some pictures. They've got sticky-tack on the back, so it's easy on, easy off." She moved over to a box that was sitting open near one wall - the pictures varied between family photos (the first few being three people, and then after what looked like some time had passed, just two), single shots of Prudence, her mother, and her father, plus various relatives, and then finally pictures of Prudence looking much happier and older in college. She started to pull out a few frames, showing the sticky-tack to Kami and demonstrating the proper way to hang them on the wall.

"Hah, honestly, I think it's in the rulebook. The horror rulebook? You gotta look back, even though you know it's stupid. I mean, everyone does it all the time - you look back, think back without meaning to." She placed a nice family photo of her and her parents when she was three, before the visions and everything started and they looked fairly normal. As the years went on in the photos, varying stages of haggardness seemed to hang around Pru's young face, along with plastic smiles worn by her parents. If there was ever anything denoting an oddness about the Collins family, it would be those photos.

"I guess but acting isn't quite like real life, you know." Kami slipped from the couch and gave her entire body a quick, loosening stretch before she moved towards the box Prudence had begun with and crouched at its side. The first picture she lifted gave her pause and she studied the frozen image of a five year old Prudence and what had to be her father. She brushed a fingertip over the shy, little smile and wondered at what could have put it there. Then she gave her head a small shake and flowed back to her feet with the picture in hand.

"You were a cutie pie," she announced as she held the picture at a likely spot in the wall. "What made you get into special effects instead of acting, anyway?"

Kami did have her there - though Pru knew plenty of actors who took their craft from real life, using it to power their emotions and bring their characters to life on the silver screen. But that wasn't Prudence, no, she was more concerned with behind the scenes.

At the question, Prudence shrugged. "Well, for one thing, I have horrible stage fright. I might be talking to you now, but when I was that age," and she bobbed her head at the photo Kami was holding, "I could go days without saying a word. And...I just like doing things with my hands." That and her visions gave her such startling clarity on her projects that it seemed a shame to put such a gift to waste. If one could call it a gift. Of course, she could have easily applied it to acting as well, but as she said, she had a hard enough time of it just talking to people.

"What made you decide to go into acting?" Prudence put up a picture of her parents on their wedding day, and then started to try and decide what should go next to it - a photo of her laying on a couch with a Sleeping Beauty book covering her face or a Christmas photo of the entire family when she was ten. Prudence was never a fan of plaid, really, but the whole family was dressed to the nines identically. Embarrassingly so.

Kami laughed and confidently placed her picture in the growing arrangement. Then she bent to snatch up another at random, not even pausing to look at it before answering. "Do you want my reason or the reason an old college roommate gave? I warn you that hers has about a million ten-dollar words to it." She held up the new picture in her hand, pausing to consider the arrangement growing on the wall for a moment. She held it above the plaid shot and then the wedding picture and then shook her head before handing it to Prudence in resignation. "I don't know," she said to explain her indecision.

Then she crouched to sort through the remaining pictures and picked up the former conversation thread as if there had never been an interruption. "I suppose," Kami answered lightly, "that I just like playing pretend. I'm not trying to escape myself or anything silly like that. I like who I am but I like being someone else, too. Just for fun. I've been playing pretend for as long as I can remember." She tugged a new picture free and stared at it for a moment, smile growing. It was a very, very tiny Prudence, wrapped in a snowsuit and held by beaming parents.

"And I like making people smile," she admitted. "That was the best thing about my last job."

((OOC: Sorry about that, didn't even realize it had posted twice))

Pru took the handed-off picture, waiting for Kami to elaborate. Most people their age had no idea what they wanted to do - it seemed pretty advanced, to Pru at least, that they both already had careers, even if Kami was currently between jobs. And there was nothing wrong with that, either: freelance put Prudence between jobs often enough, so she knew what it felt like. After studying the picture for a moment, she placed it underneath her parents' wedding portrait, glancing to the side when Kami's voice rang out once more.

"Well that's a good enough reason, I suppose," she teased, taking a step back to look over the pictures that had been hung. It was her hope to cover the entire wall with photos, making it some sort of centerpiece for the living room. "I mean, if you're good at it - the acting part, I already know you're good at making others smile - there's no reason why you can't simply enjoy what you do." She looked over to what Kami was looking at, a cheeky smirk on her face. "Oh god, don't look at that one, I look like a marshmellow."

"You look beyond adorable," the other woman argued good-naturedly. "Look at those cheeks. I could just reach through the picture and pinch them." Kami shot Pru a sideways look and grinned. "Babies are too cute for words," she admitted. "I can't help but cuddle them if the moms let me. Kids are just as cool. There's something really special when you can make them smile full-on."

With a gesture better suited for the hanging of the Mona Lisa, Kami placed the baby picture on the wall. Then she stepped back and regarded it with a huge smile. "Perfect," she announced. Glancing back at Pru, the smile gentled and she gave a little shrug. "No reason at all. I think it's important to love what you're doing or why would you even do it? I love acting and dancing and even singing. I might not be Kristin Chenoweth but I can carry a tune well enough to get buy." She stepped back and returned to the box of pictures with a faint sigh. Somehow the sigh held no sadness or signal for worry; it was merely a breath after a thought. "I really need to find more jobs," she admitted. "I miss the rush."

Kami looked up at Pru, head tilted. "You probably totally understand me, right?"

Pru shook her head at Kami's response - kids. Prudence didn't really have a lot of good things to say about kids, never having had a good experience with one. Well, then again, she'd not necessarily had a bad experience with children, but everything about being young was colored by her experiences growing up. She bit back a laugh, however, at the grandiose gesture with which Kami hung the picture on the wall.

"I completely understand you." Prudence put two more photos up - each of her in college, looking extremely recent because, well, they were - and took a step back to look over the entire wall. It was far from filled, but Prudence was hoping to fix that. It was a way of forcing herself to get out and about, meet people, do things. There would be no holing up in her apartment, no hiding away from the world as she used to.

"It's like...this is going to sound so cliche, but like you were meant to do it. I mean, not like I was meant to fake people's deaths and injuries... Hah, yeah. I'm just going to pretend I didn't say that." But she knew she was meant for something in particular. That had to be the reason why she had this ability. This gift, this curse, whatever one wanted to call it.

"Thanks for helping out," she ended with, turning her head to look at Kami.

"Oh, any time." Kami's bright grin and ready answer spoke only truth in the words. She tucked her hands into her back pockets, rocking forward onto the balls of her feet for a moment in absent motion as she again considered the wall. "Should we finish this now or do you want another cupcake break?"

Prudence opened her mouth to suggest more chocolate (because who didn't think better on a sugar high) when her phone went off again. This time it wasn't an alarm but an actual ring - the dark-haired young woman looked from her new friend to the phone, and held up one finger as though to suggest just a sec. A few steps later had the phone in her hand and flipped open to press to her ear.

"Hello?" She listened for a moment, nodding her head in time with whatever someone on the other side was saying. "Yes. Yes, I can. Well, it's a thirty minute drive but I can be there...sure thing. See you." She snapped the phone closed and looked back over to Kami.

"I'm so sorry to cut this short, but that was the producer. Um, from the film I'm currently working on - somehow the monster I designed got booted across the set and they need me to come in and repair it," she rolled her eyes, knowing that some stupid college co-ed on internship had probably been messing around with it. Moving through the apartment comfortably, she grabbed her coat, and her shoes were by the door.

"We'll have to do this again, though," she added with a smile. "Not you helping me unpack, of course, but just...hanging out."

"Oh, definitely!" Kami's face glowed with interest and she practically vibrated with the contained urge to ask more questions about the movie but manners kept her in check as she followed Pru towards the door. "My door is pretty much always open to friends so feel free to stop by whenever you want. I hate getting lonely." She grinned and slipped through the door ahead of the other girl, allowing for her to lock the apartment. "And the rest of the cupcakes are all yours," she added. "If you like those, maybe I'll make you my guinea pig on other recipes."

Half-skipping, Kami moved a bit down the hallway in the direction of the stairs before lifting a hand in a cheerful wave. "Drive safely and kick the ass of whoever hurt your baby," she called. Then, leaving Pru to get on with her job, the curvy brunette spun on her heel and trotted off to the stairwell to disappear back home.
