Hell or High Water
Who:  EGYPTIAN SHIRTLESS PARTY.   Open to other Egyptians!
What:  A water pipe in the stairwell blows, and the unlucky few around it at the time try to slow it until some help comes by.  But the flooding water seems to jog something in the memories of the Egyptian gods.
Where:  In the stairwell between floors 3 and 4.
When: A weekday afternoon.
Warnings:  Everyone gets wet.  Possibly a warning for language, we shall see.

The elevator of course wasn't working - even Amrit Nikesh, who had only been at Pax for two weeks, knew to expect the elevator to be a death trap more often than it was helpful.  More than once he heard about people getting stuck in there, and even had some freaky rickety moments while he was moving stuff in.  The thought of that thing falling right through to the basement one day didn't occur to him, but the idea of the door jamming and getting locked into that box rattled Rick just a little.

So Rick hummed to himself as he took the stairs two at time, practically flying up them in his Nikes.  The elevator didn't matter.  He planned on taking the stairs anyway - even if he had landed a place on the top floor instead of the 7th, the restlessness thrumming through him would've still compelled him to climb it the hard way.

It was kind of odd, really.  He never came home exhausted.   In fact, right now, Rick felt like he could climb the side of the building if he wanted to.  Like he came home from a long day at work and by the time he hit his apartment he still got a rush, like the kind physical thrill snowboarding or surfing could give you.  He tore apart and put back together his apartment twice now.  He'd need to jump on getting into a gym or something, he thought, or he'd go crazy from all the energy buzzing in him.  Figure out where his free weights went, at least.  Maybe he left them with his bro, or just get a new set-

His chin and face snapped up, suddenly jarred clear out of his thoughts.  Someone just sprayed ice-water into his face, or at least it felt that way, and now it still felt like a fainter, hazy mist was falling from somewhere above him.  He needed a moment to get back on track, wiped his face with his elbow, and looked around for a reason. Seeing no immediate cause, Rick stepped towards the old central rail and leaned some of his body over the side, trying to get a better view up the stairwell.

"Hey?" he called, just to be sure.

For Zara's part, her tank top was already soaked through, and the tops of her jeans were quickly getting there as well. The unbearable heat of the past few days didn't call for a jacket, especially when she'd be working outside, but she found herself regretting that decision as she tried to cross her arms as she held the phone to her ear. When the newcomer arrived, she offered him a little smile and a small wave as she waited for someone in maintenance to pick up. Absently, she bit the inside of her cheek as she watched Navid and Rick try to work with the water streaming in their faces, and subsequently, though to a slightly lesser extent, her and their newly met neighbor.

She held her own hand up to her eyes, and then, the water seemed to slow down - almost to change direction so it wasn't hitting them head on. Before Zara could pay it much mind, she turned away from the spray and bent over Navid's coat, shielding it with her body as someone from maintenance picked up.

"Hi, Nate," she said amiably, "I'm Zarina Macey, in D1, and I'm here with a few of the other tenants in stairwell two, and it seems like a pipe burst. Oh, I think around the third floor -" Zara looked up the stairwell and back down, then said, "yes, between the third and fourth floors."

As she spoke, the flow of the water slowed to nearly a trickle; she cast a glance up at Navid and the hardware he'd found. "Oh - has someone already - no?" Her brow furrowed. "OK. Sure. Thanks, Nate." With that, she wiped her phone off on a patch of dry pant leg, then slid it into the inside of Navid's jacket. Neither of them was going anywhere before a trip back up to the apartment to change anyway.

"Maintenance says they'll send somebody as soon as they can, but apparently there've been things happening all over the place today, starting with the elevator," she said, still puzzling over the tools there.

"Says you," Mirza noted sharply to the youngest of the other two men, "But I'd rather hot water. Cold makes... Well, never mind. People apparently don't appreciate my complete and utter lack of boundaries." He had been about to say cold, cold water made his nipples uncomfortable due to the piercings but yeah, he wasn't going to. Psh.

He did smile at the older man and the very pretty woman. What a lovely bunch stuck in his stairwell. He only called it his stairwell since, well, he lived on the fourth floor. Rolling his eyes a little at the feeble attempts of the two much larger men to make a hole in the wall, he set his dufflebag down on a lower step and went over to it, peering in...

"Oh honestly," he took a step back and delivered two very swift, powerful kicks to the wall, making the hole much larger than it had been before and giving them a better view of the inside... But this also had an adverse effect as apparently he had burst some kind of collecting pocket of water. His epic display of manliness (or epic display of powerful dancer legs) earned him a fat rush of water like he'd opened up a river or something. It was enough that it surprised him and swept him off his feet. Too late to stop in time for Zarina's announcement...

Off his feet and down a stair enough that he had to grab onto Rick's leg for safety which put a hand where it shouldn't have gone. "I did not mean to do that!!" he shouted, meaning just the wall as he did not really realize what had happened with Rick really.

"Dude, Cher, keep it together," he said, shaking the guy off of his leg. His hands were occupied with the pipe - Rick pulled down his sleeves over his palms and fixed his hands over the crack. It didn't do much but deter the spray out of his and Navid's faces.

Cold water or not, it was the feeling of the water splashing and flowing over his feet that chilled him the most. There was a haunting memory tied to the flowing water, even if he couldn't think of anything in his past that could explain it.

"We need the tools," Rick instead said, looking up the riser.

It seemed for the moment Mirza's intervention had done far more harm than good; Navid hoped Zara's mobile had not been damaged in the ensuing rush of collected water. He was grateful for the redirection of the water, its somewhat subdued spray allowing him a moment to think. He moved quickly now, picking his way through the rising pools of water as best he could. Reaching down, Navid scooped up the gathered materials and trudging back to his compatriots, all of them now utterly soaked. He passed the items to Rick, not releasing them until he was sure the other man had a steady grip in spite of their slick hands.

"You should move," he said, looking down to Mirza. "If you pull him off his feet and he falls on you, you'll probably be the one to get hurt."

He glanced back to Zara, throwing her an apologetic look. Navid knew well the obligations she was now missing due to this freak accident, and it seemed now there was no chance of her meeting them. The thought only further exacerbated his growing frustration. "Are you all right, Zara?"

Zara had managed to grab onto the railing just in time not to be washed down the stairs herself; Though indeed, her phone didn't fare as well as she had. She clung close to the rail, keeping a hold on Navid's jacket at the same time, eyes wide as one new neighbor clung tenaciously to the other's leg. When the flood subsided, Zara pushed her drenched hair away from her face, shaking her head. She looked down mournfully at her phone, whose screen had gone ominously black. Taking a breath, she managed a smile for Navid, nodding. "I'm fine, love. Just..." she held up the waterlogged device ruefully.

With that, she took a step up, that sense of deja vu suddenly overwhelming her again; she closed her eyes for a moment, and saw, for a moment, reeds and sand, the moon - the moon like she'd never seen it. All the blackness of something not yet born. And that quickly, it was over. She looked at their companions helplessly, then back to Navid, shivering. She offered a hand to their newest addition, who was still clinging to Rick. "Are you all right?" she asked him as she helped him up. Then, "Do you think you can fix it?" she asked Rick.

"Sorry," Mirza had muttered, letting go of Rick's leg... Although what he had felt - hey! That'd been good times. Even if he was getting half drowned and looking rattish while doing it. But while he'd caused a flood, he felt that he had done a good thing as they could get into the wall a whole lot more now. He could feel bad about the drowning of the phone later.

"Like it would matter if I got hurt... I'd get out of work at least!" That was the most important thing on his mind really. Getting out of work. Maybe building emergency would be enough to get him out of it. Managing to get to his feet with Zara's help, he first said, "Yes, thank you," then trudged back up a couple of steps and whipped off his shirt without even thinking about it. Mirza set about wringing it out, grumbling something about dry clean only.

Although he knew he was cold and a little shivery, goosebumps all over his skin, a place on the very middle of his back felt almost warm and for a brief second Mirza would have sworn he heard the rush of water again... But more on the level of a river and not the flood of the hallway but he brushed it off as an auditory hallucination from COLD FUCKING WATER. "This is ridiculous... If we had a case for suing I'd be all for it."

In all intents and purposes, climbing the fucking stairs was epic weaksauce. What was worse was following a trail of water that trickled down the landing. Devin scratched her head as she peeked up the stairs to the gaggle of weirdos gathered around.

"All right, which of you broke the damn building?" she asked, peeking over the lowest step with narrowed eyes. Her tone was as accusatory as it could get.

"It's not broken!" Rick yelled back, his pride responding instinctively to the foreign accusation. He shifted his hands over the crack, and got a cold spray to the face because of it. "Okay, yes it is. But none of us did it."

The stress of the cold water and the breakage finally seemed to catch up to Rick, as he certainly wasn't grinning as he tried to fix the pipe now. He tried pulling the rubber taut around the pipe a few times, which should have been more than easy enough with his strength. But it always shifted and slid off of the crack, like the pipe just decided it did not want to be fixed. "Dammit. Can you try it, Navid?"

Given the situation, the newcomer's entrance was neither helpful nor particularly desirable. Navid's lips thinned, an exasperated sigh escaping him. But rather than rise to the obvious bait he merely turned to his now-coworker, gritting his teeth as he leaned into the frigid spray. As before, the rubber padding continued to slip; it was all he could do to fit the sheet over the break at all, let alone secure it. A lesser man might have cursed. Navid only further clenched his jaw, shaking his waterlogged head as he fought to tighten his grip on the pipe.

"At this point maintenance had better get here soon," he said, coughing as he tipped his head from beneath the flow of water. "I feel sorry for anyone on three or below, though."

Zara offered the slender gentleman a little smile once he was back on his feet and said, "Work or no, better that you don't have any broken bones. Those suck." Then, she turned her focus back to the repairs in question. She wished the water would just stop flowing so hard - and then it began to. the water pressure reduced significantly, allowing Navid to work with it more easily. When the next new neighbor entered and accused them of 'breaking the building,' Zara couldn't bring herself to reply. It seemed like the most absurd statement to make, and the least helpful.

But at least the flow was slowing, and it seemed as though there might actually be a chance for Navid to make some headway. At this point, all Zara wanted was to get back to their apartment, change into some dry clothes, and warm up. She felt as though she'd never be warm again.

Zara was sweet - he liked her. But part of him wanted to argue about the broken bones. Yes, they sucked but he wouldn't mind getting one even if it would put him out of work for awhile. Especially because it would. Of course then he have no way of paying his bills or buying groceries... Double edge sword wasn't it?

Gaggle of weirdos? Right, because anyone in this building was normal. "Nobody broke the damn building," he said, backing up Navid, "It broke itself. Buildings do that," Mirza said, wiping water from his face. Yeah, that was totally going to help his overall wetness.

Instead he just watched the attempted repair, surprised that the water was actually kind of letting up. "I'm not entirely certain maintenance actually exists," he noted wryly. God, how could none of them have any experience in fixing anything?

"Someone's going to have to clean up this mess, so I hope maintenance exists for that." Rick still was at the ready for Navid's command. "Almost got it, boss? I'm ready to clamp that bad boy down and get this done with."

The waterflow definitely was down, which was a relief. But instead of thinking it was cause of Navid's efforts, which was only rational, Rick glanced down to Zara instead. Of course, she was nowhere near the pipe, so he wasn't sure what that was about.

He grinned widely down to Zara, then to Mirza and the new girl as well. "Hey, thanks. You guys must be good-luck charms."

"I think this should hold," Navid said. His tone betrayed his uncertainty. It seemed strange that the water pressure should slacken so now, but he allowed it was perhaps possible maintenance had learned of the break and acted to at least stem the destructive tide. He shifted further to the side, giving Rick as much room to work as he could manage. He held the sheeting in place, water running in ever-lessening rivulets down his upraised arms. Silently he counted down the minutes until he could be back within the safety of his apartment - preferably beneath a steaming hot shower, with a warm, dry towel awaiting him.

Zara smiled at Rick when he looked at her - though she wasn't sure why he had. She was grateful, though, that the water was behaving itself - and now, it seemed to have slowed almost to a stop. As she watched him and Navid work, the smile widened a little; they seemed to have the problem well in hand.

"Thank you, guys," she said to the two of them. "I bet it'll stay long enough for maintenance to get to it."

The tension in Navid's shoulders was practically visible; she resisted the strong urge to go to him and put a gentle, encouraging hand on his back. Soon enough, this would be done, and she could take care of him in their own little space. Going to Long Beach at this point would be a fruitless endeavor; by the time she showered and changed the light wouldn't be right anymore, but at least she might get to spend a little extra time with Navid.

Wouldn't that be some kind of house keeping? No, wait. That was a motel or a hotel. This was an apartment building. So yeah, maintenance better exist. He watched the two men work on the pipes and this time decided to stay out of the way. No more kicking the walls for him.

Good luck charms. Right. Mirza sighed heavily and looked between the lot of them. Then he sort of threw a dismissive hand in the air, "Alright. Everyone back to my place for relaxing alcohol. It's not the best, but it's the closest." He went to go pick up his bag and when he did, he added, "Fee saḥitkum and all that, yeah?" Yes, he had slipped in the Egyptian Arabic for 'good health/cheers'. "I'm Mirza by the way."

In the back of his mind, he knew it seemed silly to be offering alcohol instead of saying time to get dry clothes but he didn't care. After this, he wanted a drink, damn it.

Rick pointed down the stairwell, his index finger and thumb cocked like a pointed gun. "You've got the idea, Mir. I'm thinking a beer and a shower, in that order." He lifted his gym bag, which smacked against his back in a cold wet thud that sent a sudden, rolling shiver over him. "Or the other way around."

"Thank you, Mirza, but I think it's back to my own floor for me," Navid said, his thoughts resting less on celebrating their minor achievement than on getting out of his soaked, now thoroughly chilled clothes. He nodded a pleasant farewell to Rick, smiling softly. "And thank you, Rick. Hopefully next time we meet it'll be under better circumstances."

He moved to retrieve his coat from the railing, finding it nearly soaked through in spite of the precautions he had taken. He nodded to Zara, wordlessly indicating his thorough readiness to quit the stairwell and seek dryer, warmer refuge elsewhere.
