everybody's comin'; leave your body at the door
Who: EVERYONE.
What: The Pax Halloween Party, part one.
Where: Pax Letale apartment complex, rec room.
When: 7 p.m., Oct. 31.
Notes: Hi guys! Sorry this took so long to get up; things have been pretty crazy here. But here is the Halloween event! This is the first part, and should be treated like a regular event; please mark where and when your character can be found throughout the room. Please remember that your character must be wearing their Halloween mask provided to them at the beginning of the month in order to gain admission to the rec room party. This is crucial for the second part of the event. If there are two people in a thread, please ask permission before entering; if you have any questions, please contact the mods! Now on with the show!

Despite the general eeriness of the building at large, those who make their way downstairs to the Halloween party will find it decorated to entertain. The lobby's emptiness will have been filled by a set of bloody sticker footprints from the elevator leading toward the rec room, through the door of which lights and music blare into the hallway. Stephan is waiting outside the entry way, dressed to the nines like a bald Morticia Addams, his red nails clicking on a clipboard as he takes note of who's arrived and who hasn't. Those who aren't dressed appropriately—read: with their Pax-provided masks—will be denied entry until they go and retrieve said item. Upon entry, Stephan will make the remark that attendees are to enjoy themselves, and that a special guest of honor will arrive a few hours later.

Those who make it past the drag queen bouncer will find a rather ghoulishly delightful party inside. Orange and black streamers hang in wound loops from the walls, pinned carefully to the molding near the ceiling. Bats, cartoon cutouts of witches flying over a waning moon, black cats, and pumpkins all cover the walls from top to bottom; carved pumpkins are set on every available table space, lit and flickering in the low light. The doors to the pool area are open, a disco ball shining orange, black and white specks over everything as classic Halloween hits are played from a nearby boombox. The pool itself glows a ghostly green.

Back inside the rec room, a long table opposite the pool table is laden with hot dog finger treats, feet made of meatloaf, speared deviled eggs painted like eyeballs, and every other appropriately-themed Halloween food item an attendee could think of. In the middle of it all, amid black and orange plates and clear, orange-y cups, is a bowl filled generously with store-bought candy. On either side are punch bowls filled with green and red liquid; the former will taste like apple cider, the latter a regular tropical punch. Neither are alcoholic, but attendees are welcome to sneak their own into the party—Stephan's not watching that closely.

Overall, the party seems normal—too normal for some, though no one will find any mislaid bear traps, poisoned candy or razor-blade laden apples anywhere in the vicinity. Might as well enjoy it while it lasts....

Chris/Daniel/June/Kal - 8:30 p.m., by the pool table

They were late; fashionably late, as some might call it, but if Chris had had his way, he wouldn't have come to this party at all. In the end, it had taken equal parts guilt tripping and puppy eyes from Kal, June, and Daniel (the latter being responsible for the eyes) to make him now show up in his store-bought 'Native American' outfit, the coyote mask over his eyes.

"I don't know who spiked the punch, but I need to personally thank them," Chris muttered, draining his second cup and feeling wobbly even on his brace. The mask made him feel uncomfortable, but at least the presence of his friends gave him some modicum of security. Even still, he felt like he was waiting for the other shoe to drop; there had to be something going on here, something greater than what seemed the sum of its parts.

But he was doing his best to play it cool, to not have anyone believe he was anything more than his usual miserly self when it came to having a good time. He wished, not for the first time that evening, that he was more comfortable with being handsy in public due to Daniel's choice in costume, but he vented his frustrations by hitting a striped blue ball into the corner pocket.

"We need to be betting on this game. I'm kicking all of your asses right now, how I'm not taking your money too is a crime."

"I'll bet," Daniel said, "but not money."

He propped his hip against the side of the pool table; the thin red fabric of his tunic rode all the higher up his thighs. He brushed a fallen droplet of liquor-infused punch from his faux leather breastplate, bringing it to his lips with a salacious little gesture. It might have seemed as if he had forgotten himself, had forgotten they were in public and where all their neighbors could see. But in spite of his growing intoxication Daniel was exhibiting what he felt was a monumental level of self control. He had not, for example, touched the leather fringe at Chris's chest even once; had not brushed past him too closely since they had left the safety of Chris's apartment. So if he was feeling bold now, he felt he deserved it, a fair exchange for his good behavior so far.

"One of us has to beat him," he said. "Y'all know that, right? Or we're never gonna hear the end of it."

"He's not as good as he thinks he is," June said. Slowly her brows lowered from the heights they had climbed at Daniel's bold flirting. She kept her eyes on Chris all the while, reading his reactions, gauging whether or not she needed to intercede on his behalf.

John Smith's severed head watched their game from the sidelines, propped up on the side rail of the pool table. June, dressed as a war-painted Pocahontas, her hands stained with settlers' blood, picked up her pool cue and pressed its butt into Chris's ribs. "We're taking you down, tramposo, so enjoy this while it lasts."

"Just give him more to drink," Kal called over the table. "He'll get too distracted by Daniel to know what he's doing," he murmured to June whom he stood beside. Standing with his chest naked, the water-like mask strapped to his face, and a traditional wrap around his waist that he owned, thank you very much, Kal looked perfectly Polynesian. All in all, it wasn't much different from his normal look if he were in Hawaii and visiting extended family members for a celebration.

"Hey, you want more to drink, braddah?" Kal called over the table to his friend. He raised his own cup in reference before chugging the rest of his punch. "I can get you more of this punch, you're going through that one pretty quickly."

"Amigo, you'd be better off playing that hand before showing your cards," Chris called back, raising his cup in a salute to Kal but only sipping from its remnants to slow its eventual disappearance. Distraction stood next to him in a Greek outfit complete with a leather-bound mask, and Chris was doing his best to not overly linger on said costume. Instead, he moved away from June's jab, raising his brows.

"Big talk, chica. How about you follow that up with a big move?" He waved his hand toward the waiting game before them.

There was clearly something of a conspiracy at work. Though Daniel had picked up on June's wariness toward his behavior, the more important goal was clear: Chris had to be suitably distracted and summarily destroyed. So Daniel moved a little closer as June picked up her cue again, both of them eyeballing the dwindling booze in Chris's hand.

"So what should I bet?" he asked, leaning far closer to Chris than the situation required. "Winner tops? Chooses the next roleplay theme?" He grinned beneath the gold-spiked edges of his mask. "C'mon. You've gotta have something in mind."

"Are they always like this?" June glanced to Kal, her nose wrinkling beneath her own black-feathered domino. She was only half-teasing, and Chris was clearly not the most pronounced target of her comment. Not waiting for a reply, she tapped her cue against the floor as she studied the table laid out before her. She circled like a shark until she found just the angle she wanted. Then she pocketed two solids quite neatly, only to scratch on the third. She mumbled a curse.

"Think you can keep your hands on the table long enough to do better?" she taunted. "Or do Kal and I need to clear out for a sec while you work out... whatever frustration is causing all this?" She turned to Kal, a sharp little grin quirking her lips. "Go ahead and get that next drink," she said, her voice a stadium whisper.

"Of course, my queen," Kal teased, a mighty arm curling around June's shoulders and pulling her close into a side hug. "And they are never like this in public," he murmured into June's ear before giving her a wink and moving away.

"Drinks for everyone!" he announced, pointing at Daniel and Chris both as he began moving away, walking backwards with a devilish grin. He looked at his new neighbor and old friend and his grin widened. "June, demolish him before I get back, alright?"

Chris was, all things considered, perfectly distracted by Daniel's close presence; he'd opened his mouth to reply up until he saw June's misstep.

"Y'all are playing dirty," he replied, his free hand reaching out to tap Daniel under the chin. He ambled away from his boyfriend, all the better to clear his head with and judge the layout again.

Even with the distance, his gaze went back to Daniel, the cue pointed in the gladiator's direction. "BJs. For a week." The words went by quick enough, though coming out of his mouth was sure to turn any nearby listener's head. Chris chucked his chin in Daniel's direction. "You're up, chico."

"Only a week?" Daniel reached for the cue he'd cast aside in favor of getting handsy with his partner. "You must not be sure you're gonna win." He flashed a sharp grin over at June. "We've got him now."

For all his seeming self-assurance, Daniel put a great deal of focus on his next shot. He lined up the cue with the ball June had missed, carefully determining his shot. How a proper win was to be calculated in their drunken mess of a game was anyone's guess; all Daniel concerned himself with was ending the hot streak Chris seemed to be on. He easily pocketed that first ball, but missed on the second, and June snorted a laugh in response.

"Jesus. I mean really..." She moved closer to the table, her dark eyes flicking over the few balls remaining to them. "You better know those stakes don't apply to me, by the way. So what do you plan on doing when I win?"

He cue flashed out, quick as a serpent's strike. She split two of the balls called as hers, grinning wide as one dropped into a corner pocket and another into the side. "One more," she taunted, circling the table like a shark. She looked over her shoulder, easily spying Kal's massive form looming over the majority of the crowd. "Kal, come watch me win this thing!"

"Coming!" Kal yelled from the punch table as he carefully lifted four full cups of punch and navigated his way back to the pool table. "Kick his ass. I don't want to hear him bragging for the next however long it takes for them to host another one of these parties."

He circled the table and offered cups of punch to each of his friends, returning to June's side and holding onto her cup. Looking at Daniel and Chris, he smirked. "When would the next party be, do you think? Christmas? Or when we start having zombies break out of the walls? What other shit could this place end up doing do you think?"

"Do we really need to speculate on it?" Chris added in, draining the remnants of his current cup and holding it out for Kal to slide the new one in. "Can't we just enjoy normal shit while it lasts?"

He turned a pointed finger in June's direction. "And I wouldn't worry about winning, amiga, and trust me, I'm not gonna be looking for reparations from your side, just his," Chris replied, jerking his thumb in Daniel's direction.

"Anyway, I think it's...what are you, anyway? The beefiest mermaid ever? Your turn, amigo." Chris leaned against his stick, one hip hitting the edge of the pool table as he eyed Kal from waist level up.

Daniel rolled his eyes at Chris's comment to June, though in truth he was not at all upset about the stakes here. It was only the losing that bothered him. Though Chris's turn was still a ways off, he took that opportunity to sidle up closer to his partner, his touch a ghosting taunt of a thing, just barely avoiding brushing Chris's hip.

"June's only got one to go," he said, nodding his head toward the single ball she required to win. "We've almost got him. Make this one count, Kal."

"Do your worst, Kolohe," June said. "I've got you all on the ropes. And when I win, I want you losers to cook my dinners for a week. From scratch, not some bullshit from the frozen aisle."

She leaned her pool cue against the table, turning her attention to her refreshed drink, and to her decapitated dance partner. She rested her elbow atop his head, propping herself up on him as she sipped at her drink.

"Baby doll, you know I cook a mean kalua pig. Or at least kuku does." He grabbed a cue and used it to point at Chris, an eyebrow raising dangerously. "And it's a traditional wrap you asshole. Don't hate, either, it's good to let my abs breathe."

He smirked and snatched the pool cue away, bending down low to focus on decimating Chris's chances. Whoever else won, he didn't care, but he was determined to make Chris suffer. "Here goes nothing," he muttered as he angled the cue and after a moment's pause, made a quick jab with it that artfully sent his designated billiard balls just where he wanted to go.

Standing up straight, he grinned at Chris. "And now that I'm winning, I think I'll steal June's idea and say you owe me home-cooked meals for a week."

Chris blinked, clearly uncertain about what he'd just witnessed. But the play remained laid out, unchanged.

"You seriously cheated somehow, which... I have to admit, if you did, I'm impressed," he finally admitted, a sulky frown turning his lips downward. He took a long drink from his cup, setting his pool cue on the table as he admitted defeat.

"All right, now what? You know, I think you owe me some food, for treating me so abysmally," he started in Daniel's direction, the beginnings of a pout. He glanced at June and Kal, their drinks in hand. "Food, and then, what, I guess we can see what else this party gets up to?"
