everybody's comin'; leave your body at the door
Who: EVERYONE.
What: The Pax Halloween Party, part one.
Where: Pax Letale apartment complex, rec room.
When: 7 p.m., Oct. 31.
Notes: Hi guys! Sorry this took so long to get up; things have been pretty crazy here. But here is the Halloween event! This is the first part, and should be treated like a regular event; please mark where and when your character can be found throughout the room. Please remember that your character must be wearing their Halloween mask provided to them at the beginning of the month in order to gain admission to the rec room party. This is crucial for the second part of the event. If there are two people in a thread, please ask permission before entering; if you have any questions, please contact the mods! Now on with the show!

Despite the general eeriness of the building at large, those who make their way downstairs to the Halloween party will find it decorated to entertain. The lobby's emptiness will have been filled by a set of bloody sticker footprints from the elevator leading toward the rec room, through the door of which lights and music blare into the hallway. Stephan is waiting outside the entry way, dressed to the nines like a bald Morticia Addams, his red nails clicking on a clipboard as he takes note of who's arrived and who hasn't. Those who aren't dressed appropriately—read: with their Pax-provided masks—will be denied entry until they go and retrieve said item. Upon entry, Stephan will make the remark that attendees are to enjoy themselves, and that a special guest of honor will arrive a few hours later.

Those who make it past the drag queen bouncer will find a rather ghoulishly delightful party inside. Orange and black streamers hang in wound loops from the walls, pinned carefully to the molding near the ceiling. Bats, cartoon cutouts of witches flying over a waning moon, black cats, and pumpkins all cover the walls from top to bottom; carved pumpkins are set on every available table space, lit and flickering in the low light. The doors to the pool area are open, a disco ball shining orange, black and white specks over everything as classic Halloween hits are played from a nearby boombox. The pool itself glows a ghostly green.

Back inside the rec room, a long table opposite the pool table is laden with hot dog finger treats, feet made of meatloaf, speared deviled eggs painted like eyeballs, and every other appropriately-themed Halloween food item an attendee could think of. In the middle of it all, amid black and orange plates and clear, orange-y cups, is a bowl filled generously with store-bought candy. On either side are punch bowls filled with green and red liquid; the former will taste like apple cider, the latter a regular tropical punch. Neither are alcoholic, but attendees are welcome to sneak their own into the party—Stephan's not watching that closely.

Overall, the party seems normal—too normal for some, though no one will find any mislaid bear traps, poisoned candy or razor-blade laden apples anywhere in the vicinity. Might as well enjoy it while it lasts....

Re: Gabe/Nish/Rafe - 8:02 p.m., back by the punch bowl

She was about to retort that finding time to talk in private was part of the problem, but she kept quiet and let Gabe speak. The two of them, acting so calm and collected seemed to diffuse a little of her own anger and she sighed, some of her frustration leaving her. “I’m…god, I’m sorry,” she said, “that wasn’t meant for you. Uhhm…” she looked down at the empty cup in her hand and the dregs of red punch still clinging to the bottom, and then back at them. “Someone…spiked the punch, and…” she let the cup fall to the table, taking a deep breath and leaning on it to steady herself. She’d had far too much, and her body was revolting against it. “I didn’t realize it until it was too late.” Which explained the first cup, but not the last three. She glanced at the food Gabe had suggested, but wasn’t sure her stomach would accept any of it.

"That's OK," Rafe said. He tipped his head toward Gabe and the table beyond; slid a hand around her shoulders, guiding her along with them closer to the table. "You'll feel better with some food on your stomach. Maybe some of the... uh, meatloaf, I think..."

Setting his drink down, he took his own advice, working his way down the table and plucking a little from each tray. Once the food was cut into, Rafael realized, it did not look quite as unappetizing as it did in its carefully sculpted shapes. He finished preparing his own plate, then set to work on a second, these portions a bit larger than the ones he had given himself. He held the second out to her. "You'll feel better. Really. Just slow down a little." Please, his eyes said, even through the thick golden material of the domino resting over them.

Nodding encouragingly and glad that Nish seemed receptive to their suggestions, Gabe put his own drink down and grabbed a plate to help support Rafe's handling of the situation.

"It's really much better cut up so it looks more like food," he quipped, trying to be comforting. "And we can take it over to the little seating area. You can get some air, and just... Maybe not think about things.

"How's the painting going, actually?" He tried, groping for a topic that was neither Pax nor work related, nor especially relationship related, so that they could all have something to discuss that was far, far apart from anything triggering.

She followed obediently when they led her to a table, wobbling a little on the way and then sitting in one of the uncomfortable folding chairs. "Uhhm...not for a while," she said with a frown, "not since I broke up with Jen." That brought tears to her eyes; she still felt bad about it. Still missed her sometimes. Theyd agreed to stay friends, but Jen had been keeping her distance once Nish and James got back together, and Nish hadn't been able to bring herself to go to another painting class.

"God, I love him," she sighed. "Even when he was gone, I still...and now I just fucked everything up." She looked up at Rafe, pleading as if she'd personally wronged him too. "I swear I didn't know it was spiked, and now I'm just...I'm such a bitch when I drink..."

Rafe was shaking his head before she had finished the thought. "Stop that," he said, his voice still soft. "Just get some food on your stomach. Soak up a little of that alcohol and everything will seem better, I promise." He picked up a little napkin from the table and held it out toward her.

"So this painting," he said, doing his best to help Gabe draw her back toward more comfortable topics. "You know, I really think it helps to have another outlet." Not just therapy, he thought, but did not say. "You shouldn't give it up just because of her."

Gabe nodded. "Relationships come and go, the outlets are what help us process them. I mean, my writing was what helped me process our break up," he offered, gesturing between himself and Rafe. He didn't know if he was wandering into unneeded territory, but Rafe had opened the door to that earlier in the conversation.

"So, you know, paint it out. Even if it's just stuff for yourself. Keeps the emotions from festering just in your own head."

She nodded, nibbling a little at the cut up feetloaf on her plate as she listened, though her brain was taking it's time processing what they were saying. "I usually painted my dreams, or what Loki told me to," she said with a frown, "but the class gave me other ideas. Colours for emotions, and...landscapes and still life. I just can't...she'd be there, and we said we'd stay friends, but..." she frowned down at her dinner. "I feel like I just used her. I broke it off because I realized I was still in love with James. Is that bad?" she asked, "it feels bad..."

"No. You would have used her if you'd stayed even when you felt something for someone else." Color crept into Rafael's cheeks. His eyes darted back to Gabriel. He cleared his throat and forced himself to focus on her situation rather than the familiar chords it struck with his own.

"It's a big city, Nish," he said. "Find another class. Keep doing what helps you. You, not Loki. OK?"

A hand slipped down to brush Rafe's thigh, for both his own comfort and his partner's.

"Even with... all of this going on," Gabe agreed, his free hand tapping the side of his head to imply whoever was inside it, "we still have to take care of ourselves. And Rafe's right, it'd be impossible for this huge city of creatives to only have one painting class." He smiled, his hand reaching for his drink.

"You know what we should do? Once you're done eating, we should go dance a little. Exercise makes everyone feel better, eh?"

She nodded again, feeling better the longer they spoke and made more sense than her own thoughts did. "Okay," she agreed, popping a cherry tomato in her mouth and chewing thoughtfully. "You guys are good friends," she said with a little smile. "You are my friends, right?" she asked Rafe, looking slightly concerned.

[ooc: yep! Close with Rafe?]

"Of course." The look on his face was pleasant enough, though it also managed quite well at expressing his disbelief she required such reassurance. Then he speared a bit of food with one plastic fork and set to work on his own small meal. He felt better with each little bite, and soon the plate was empty, set aside in favor of taking Gabe's hand back in his. He beckoned Nish to follow them as they moved toward the dance floor.
