everybody's comin'; leave your body at the door
Who: EVERYONE.
What: The Pax Halloween Party, part one.
Where: Pax Letale apartment complex, rec room.
When: 7 p.m., Oct. 31.
Notes: Hi guys! Sorry this took so long to get up; things have been pretty crazy here. But here is the Halloween event! This is the first part, and should be treated like a regular event; please mark where and when your character can be found throughout the room. Please remember that your character must be wearing their Halloween mask provided to them at the beginning of the month in order to gain admission to the rec room party. This is crucial for the second part of the event. If there are two people in a thread, please ask permission before entering; if you have any questions, please contact the mods! Now on with the show!

Despite the general eeriness of the building at large, those who make their way downstairs to the Halloween party will find it decorated to entertain. The lobby's emptiness will have been filled by a set of bloody sticker footprints from the elevator leading toward the rec room, through the door of which lights and music blare into the hallway. Stephan is waiting outside the entry way, dressed to the nines like a bald Morticia Addams, his red nails clicking on a clipboard as he takes note of who's arrived and who hasn't. Those who aren't dressed appropriately—read: with their Pax-provided masks—will be denied entry until they go and retrieve said item. Upon entry, Stephan will make the remark that attendees are to enjoy themselves, and that a special guest of honor will arrive a few hours later.

Those who make it past the drag queen bouncer will find a rather ghoulishly delightful party inside. Orange and black streamers hang in wound loops from the walls, pinned carefully to the molding near the ceiling. Bats, cartoon cutouts of witches flying over a waning moon, black cats, and pumpkins all cover the walls from top to bottom; carved pumpkins are set on every available table space, lit and flickering in the low light. The doors to the pool area are open, a disco ball shining orange, black and white specks over everything as classic Halloween hits are played from a nearby boombox. The pool itself glows a ghostly green.

Back inside the rec room, a long table opposite the pool table is laden with hot dog finger treats, feet made of meatloaf, speared deviled eggs painted like eyeballs, and every other appropriately-themed Halloween food item an attendee could think of. In the middle of it all, amid black and orange plates and clear, orange-y cups, is a bowl filled generously with store-bought candy. On either side are punch bowls filled with green and red liquid; the former will taste like apple cider, the latter a regular tropical punch. Neither are alcoholic, but attendees are welcome to sneak their own into the party—Stephan's not watching that closely.

Overall, the party seems normal—too normal for some, though no one will find any mislaid bear traps, poisoned candy or razor-blade laden apples anywhere in the vicinity. Might as well enjoy it while it lasts....

"Pleasure to meet you, Lucas," Obed said. He gave a bow of greeting deep enough to suit the courtly nature of his costume. "Any friend of Isobel and Alice is certainly a friend of mine. I'm sorry I haven't officially met you yet. Work and all, you know..." He brushed at the soft fabric of his pants. "Will she be joining us tonight?"

Lucas turned away from the concierge when he heard his name and smiled happily, waving at the approaching Isobel and another man walking towards her. "Hey, Isobel," he said warmly, and try as he might, he couldn't help his eyes from briefly shifting to her abdomen, as if checking for signs of a baby bump, which there wasn't any evidence of. Either he'd been wrong, or...

He quickly snapped his eyes away and back to them. "Ohh, uhh..." he stammered, "We're not...I mean, we're friends," he said of Alice. Truth be told, he'd been looking for her tonight too, but he hadn't spotted her.

He shook Obed's hand and smiled. "Don't I know it," he laughed, "I'm a doctor, so my schedule is often all over the place. What do you do, if you don't mind my asking?" He took the opportunity to admire their masks, as beautiful and mysterious (or perhaps not so mysterious anymore) as his own.

Isobel immediately interceded.

"Oh, no, we're not doing any of that," she said, shaking her head even while smiling. "This one works too much as it is, and he's just socializing tonight. Actually, did you get up to anything fun for Halloween, Lucas?

"Obed signed us up for the Heritage Museum tour about Victorian mourning customs; it was so strange! But fun, too," she quickly added, sparing a glance at Obed to ensure he didn't render any ill judgement on her part. Isobel passed her cup from one hand to the other as she looked back to Lucas.

"And then I got him to carve a pumpkin. I've never seen a man so deathly afraid of pumpkin guts. But you liked the seeds, hmm? A little salt and some butter go a long way." She smiled at Obed, teasing, her hand back on his arm.

Obed wrinkled his nose, though the presence of his mask decidedly lessened the expression's effect. "I wasn't afraid," he insisted. "They just felt... ugh." He waved a hand, dismissive, and wished he might so easily remove the vivid memory of the sticky, slimy sensations. "But as you can see, I'm still trying to get into the spirit of the season. And I don't think I'm doing too badly."

After a cursory glance at Lucas' mask, he nodded toward his suit. "That seems like a popular choice tonight," he said. "And admittedly the masks do go pretty well with anything. For once management seems to have given gifts we all enjoyed."

Lucas shook his head with a smile, "ahh, I haven't really had time to do the whole Halloween thing," he said regretfully, "I wanted to get a pumpkin too, but fate just seemed to thwart me every time I tried. I did have plenty of pumpkin treats from Alice's shop though," he added happily. "I do miss the seeds though," he said with a nod and smile to Isobel.

He grinned down at his own suit and back up at Obed. "Yeah, well, this is the last resort of the unprepared," he said, and then immediately put up a hand, "I mean, not to disparage your choice, my friend," he added quickly. "I didn't even plan on coming tonight, but I ended up with the night off, so, here I am." He did take one more glance around the room, noting people he knew milling about, but still no Alice.

"Well, we're glad you did," Isobel replied, smiling back at Lucas as her hands came together around her drink. "And hopefully Alice will show up as well. I haven't spoken to her much about the party... There's been too many other distractions this month." Her mouth wobbled a bit, but she forced the smile to remain.

"And November has Thanksgiving, so maybe you can still squeeze in a jack-o-lantern? I'd think it's still very fall-ish. Do you have plans with family for Turkey Day?" She sipped her tart apple-flavored drink, honestly curious if people would use the holidays as an excuse to escape from Pax, even if for a short while.

Obed was nodding along enthusiastically. The turn in conversation had him thinking about the upcoming holiday. It had meant so little to him in the past; he wondered how that might change, now that he had Isobel back in his life. What might Praxidike expect of him? What might he do to consistently show his gratitude for his partner's return? He half hid his pensive expression behind his own upraised cup, his cold eyes darting from Isobel to Lucas and back again.

"Is that a busy time for doctors in your field?" he asked Lucas, politely.

Lucas nodded to Isobel, immediately thinking about what had happened in his apartment not long ago; Apollo showing up while Alice was there. He was still coming to terms with the fact that it had happened at all, but the sudden awareness of Apollo now following him around everywhere was definitely...distracting.

"Ahh, no," he said about family. "I don't have much family to speak of, so my turkey day is usually pretty pathetic, to be honest," he said with a sheepish grin. "And most times are busy in my field, but yes, especially around holidays. Christmas and New Years are, shall we say, prime time in the ER," he said with a chuckle, taking a sip from his glass. The stuff that came in over the holidays was equally hilarious and depressing, depending on the patient, but there was definitely a lot of both. He was quite looking forward to what Apollo would make of that time of year, seeing as how the god was already very much enjoying his regular hospital hours.

Isobel's face creased into an expression of sympathy; she imagined many of the other people in the building must have been in the same boat as Lucas. She looked from their conversational partner to Obed, her mouth drawn down.

"You know, we should do something. There's not that many of us in the building. I can't imagine management would do something like this," one hand detached itself from her drink, motioning at the party around them. "Maybe we could have a potluck? Down here, so there's room enough, people could actually bring anyone they're not seeing in the building. Obed, we could get a turkey for everyone?" Her brows rose, questioning, as she watched him evaluate her idea.

"Just something to give everyone something normal for an afternoon or evening? I'd suggest our apartment, but I'm not sure it would be big enough." That, and she wasn't yet ready to have that particular sanctity invaded, not when she'd just moved back into the space.

His hesitation was a cursory thing, lasting only a moment. Then he was nodding, enthusiastic, and beginning the mental calculations of how much food it would take to feed the building's small population. "Here would be better," he said. "And we'd certainly need more than one turkey. But that's a very good idea." He laughed to himself. "Just imagine how happy Hanni will be about the leftovers..."

He nodded to Lucas. "It could be a drop-in sort of thing," he said, "in case you get called in, or have to come late. Believe me, I understand how that goes."

"That actually sounds like a great idea," he said happily. "With my hours, I haven't really had a chance to get to know many of my neighbours. And I can definitely cook something." He paused, thinking about it.

"Thanksgiving wasn't really a thing in my house when I was a kid, but I dis go to a friend's house one year. One thing I loved the most was these whipped garlic mashed potatoes his mom made...maybe I could try my hand at those..."

Isobel shook her head at the mental image of Hanni with leftover turkey meat (for his size, it would only have to be a handful, though she vaguely wondered what Cerebus would make of multiple turkeys), but grinned all the same at the positive reception her idea met.

"Wonderful, I can put something up on the network, and we can get this all sorted out. I know we have people from all over here in the building, so I think having something like this will go over especially well.

"It might be a nice break from everything else going on," she added, a shadow darkening her smile. Isobel brushed it off, and then went to drink from her cup, realizing it was empty. "Obed, are you ready for a refill? My cup's empty. It was so nice talking to you, Lucas!"

Obed nodded his answer to Isobel's query. His thoughts ran parallel to hers; everyone in the building could use a little relief, some hint of something normal in the midst of October's madness. They could provide, they had the means, and so why shouldn't they?

He nodded toward Lucas. "I'm going to hold you to this," he said, pointing an index finger at the other man. "Whipped garlic potatoes. OK? Don't just get my hopes up for no reason."

"I'll definitely be looking forward to it," he replied to Isobel before Obed interjected. Lucas laughed, "I'll be sure to make enough for an army," he said to the man as he followed her away, waving happily after them as they departed back towards the punchbowls.
