everybody's comin'; leave your body at the door
Who: EVERYONE.
What: The Pax Halloween Party, part one.
Where: Pax Letale apartment complex, rec room.
When: 7 p.m., Oct. 31.
Notes: Hi guys! Sorry this took so long to get up; things have been pretty crazy here. But here is the Halloween event! This is the first part, and should be treated like a regular event; please mark where and when your character can be found throughout the room. Please remember that your character must be wearing their Halloween mask provided to them at the beginning of the month in order to gain admission to the rec room party. This is crucial for the second part of the event. If there are two people in a thread, please ask permission before entering; if you have any questions, please contact the mods! Now on with the show!

Despite the general eeriness of the building at large, those who make their way downstairs to the Halloween party will find it decorated to entertain. The lobby's emptiness will have been filled by a set of bloody sticker footprints from the elevator leading toward the rec room, through the door of which lights and music blare into the hallway. Stephan is waiting outside the entry way, dressed to the nines like a bald Morticia Addams, his red nails clicking on a clipboard as he takes note of who's arrived and who hasn't. Those who aren't dressed appropriately—read: with their Pax-provided masks—will be denied entry until they go and retrieve said item. Upon entry, Stephan will make the remark that attendees are to enjoy themselves, and that a special guest of honor will arrive a few hours later.

Those who make it past the drag queen bouncer will find a rather ghoulishly delightful party inside. Orange and black streamers hang in wound loops from the walls, pinned carefully to the molding near the ceiling. Bats, cartoon cutouts of witches flying over a waning moon, black cats, and pumpkins all cover the walls from top to bottom; carved pumpkins are set on every available table space, lit and flickering in the low light. The doors to the pool area are open, a disco ball shining orange, black and white specks over everything as classic Halloween hits are played from a nearby boombox. The pool itself glows a ghostly green.

Back inside the rec room, a long table opposite the pool table is laden with hot dog finger treats, feet made of meatloaf, speared deviled eggs painted like eyeballs, and every other appropriately-themed Halloween food item an attendee could think of. In the middle of it all, amid black and orange plates and clear, orange-y cups, is a bowl filled generously with store-bought candy. On either side are punch bowls filled with green and red liquid; the former will taste like apple cider, the latter a regular tropical punch. Neither are alcoholic, but attendees are welcome to sneak their own into the party—Stephan's not watching that closely.

Overall, the party seems normal—too normal for some, though no one will find any mislaid bear traps, poisoned candy or razor-blade laden apples anywhere in the vicinity. Might as well enjoy it while it lasts....

Max/OPEN - 7pm - Loitering in the Lobby

Max had put her mask on before even coming downstairs, matching nicely with her fuzzy cat ears, cat tail and glittery gold dress and black fishnet tights. She wandered around the lobby, enjoying the feel of her new costume as she inspected the decorations on the way to the rec room.

Mercy partly dragged Nate off of the elevator, excitement for her favorite holiday (not to mention her birthday) vibrating through her body. She had her Calavera mask on, despite her earlier gripes; to match, a lace dress that stopped well above her knees and showed far too much skin everywhere else clad her form. She tiptoed forward on spindly heels to complete the look, her hair done up in massive curls.

She spotted a woman dressed in gold and started forward, wondering if there was something going on in the lobby as a precursor to the main party.

"Hey! Catwoman!" Mercy waved, still attached to Nate; he was her date, and as far as she was concerned, unless something better came along, he wasn't going anywhere. "Is there something out here we should be looking for?"

Nate kept his fingers laced through Mercy's as they approached their neighbor. He told himself the frisson of anxious energy he felt was solely the product of meeting so many new people, and in such a new environment. Surely it was not a holdover from their shared dream; weeks had passed, and there was no reason to still be affecting him so. So he tried to still his hands, busily fussing with the threadbare shoulder of his well-worn suit coat, touching the brim of his collapsing, moth-eaten top hat.

"I think all the food and drinks are in there," he said, flashing a bright grin as he nodded toward the rec room beyond. The sounds of music carried to them, and his steps became more like a dance the closer they drew to the party. "So let's go!"

Max smiled happily at her neighbours, immediately assuming they were a couple. "Yes please, I'm starving!" she said to Nate, following the bloody footprints to the rec room. "I didn't have dinner 'cause they always have a nice spread at these things," she explained, "you guys are new though, right? You haven't been to one of the building's parties? They're always off the hook," she explained, winking at Stephan through her mask as she passed his post by the door.

Mercy bobbed her head to the woman's explanations, her gaze moving cursorily over Stephan's outfit; the two paralleled in arched brows, judging one another's exterior. But then they were in the room and Mercy swept aside those particular judgements in favor of new ones.

"Wow," she muttered, pulling Nate along behind her like a pull-toy. "Yeah, no, we've never been. Just moved in earlier in the month, this one's been stalking me," she teased, glancing back at Nate. Even with the mask on, her trademark grin was clear through her eyes. She turned back to the woman.

"I'm Mercy, by the way, and this is my brother, Nate. How long you been here?" She started steering them toward the food and drink, hoping the latter would have more bite since this was an adult-oriented party.

The first taste of punch revealed the futility of that hope, but Nate was nothing if not prepared. He reached into the pocket of his coat, withdrawing a flask from within. He poured a measure of vodka into the cup, then held the flask out to his sister. He nodded toward Max, a silent indication that she could take the flask when ready.

"I'm not stalking her," he amended. "Just watching out for her, like any good brother. Seems like we found a pretty entertaining place to call home, though. You like it here?"

Max had a lot of practice keeping her expression from changing upon hearing something totally surprising, what with her 'day' job and all, and so the revelation that these two were siblings didn't make her suddenly shout 'OMG NO WAY', even though on the inside she was definitely thinking it.

"Max," she introduced herself, first taking Mercy's hand and then Nate's. "I love it here," she answered, "never a dull moment at Pax, it seems. I really hope they change the floors again, I'm hoping they'll bring the desert back again."

She couldn't help but grin at the sudden appearance of the flask in his hand and helping herself. She sidled over to the red punch and was about to pour herself a glass, when she thought better of it. Hefting the generous weight of the alcohol in it, she mimed to Nate that she was about to pour it all in, and then after what she was sure was a nod, did just that. "Oops," she said with a wicked grin, handing the empty flask back and pouring herself a cup of punch.

"So tell me about these costumes," she said after taking a nice long drink from her cup.

Mercy was grinning from ear to ear at Max's audacious move regarding Nate's flask and the punch bowl. She tried to hide the expression, sliding her mask up enough to allow her to sip the now-somewhat strong tropical blast, but it was a poorly attempted move; she left the mask where it lie, a little helter-skelter off the side of her forehead.

Her arms waved wide, allowing her new friend to see her whole outfit in its full glory.

"I mean, obviously I'm a Sugar Skull," Mercy explained, her smile looking like a knife slit from one cheekbone to the other. "Not my choice, entirely, and I don't encourage the monetization of other people's cultures, but I will say I appreciate an opportunity to pull this LBD out of my closet. And he's—"

Mercy reached out and grasped Nate's elbow, pulling him toward herself. "I mean, he's a skeleton, just... you know, the outfit," she said, gesturing to the threadbare elements of his suit, before stepping a little closer to Max and hiding her mouth behind a set of finely manicured nails. Even so, amid the music and chatter of the party, her next words were perfectly audible even to her own self-described sibling. "Though that suit doesn't do any justice to what's underneath it, I'm just saying that right now."

"Woman..." Nate rolled his eyes, but he did not pull away from his sister's clutching hand. He stayed close between both women, one hand outstretched to take the now-empty flask. Plucking it gingerly from Max's hand, he slipped it back into the pocket from whence it had come.

"That was good rum," he said. "Y'all better appreciate my sacrifice. Now gimme a cup of that spiked goodness."

Then he looked down to his costume, taking in all its glorious detail. He was more than a skeleton, and anyone who looked at his suit and mask could tell. But he was not ready, yet, for the name to slip from his lips, to speak into existence what he had learned in his dream. It had been just a dream, after all; a dream, and nothing more. He smiled all the brighter, pushing his doubts aside.

"And you're, um... a catgirl? I haven't seen much anime, but that's a thing, right?"

Max clapped in appreciation of Mercy's outfit, "it's gorgeous," she said, though her eyebrows had buried themselves in her hairline at her other comment. About her 'brother'. Thankfully, Nate had drawn her attention away from that line of thinking and she gave him an exaggerated bow.

"Your sacrifice, for the greater good, will not be in vain," she said with a wicked little grin. "Seriously though, who puts together a party like this and doesn't provide alcohol? We should complain to the cross-dressing management," she said, tilting her head in Stephan's general direction.

"And it's cat woman," she corrected, "though none of that batman shit, just a cat. Who's a woman." 'Bast, with far more glitter,' she thought to herself with a smirk. Somewhere inside, she thought she felt something else laugh in return. "Seriously though, it took forever to get this," she said, turning around and brandishing her tail at him, "right. I mean...I had to ruin a perfectly good dress to get it to come through properly. And..." she suddenly paused, and sighed loudly. "Shit, I forgot it at home. I was supposed to be a musical cat, but the stupid microphone is still in my apartment."

Mercy immediately glossed over any reaction to Max's reaction regarding her comment about Nate, her grin impossibly widening even more.

"Wait, wait, fuckin wait," she replied, stepping up to Max in her ridiculous heels and putting an uninvited hand to the woman's shoulder while her drink sloshed in her other grip. "Are you saying you're going for some Cats shtick? Oh my god, whatever even happened to that thing?"

Her eyes narrowed, looking to her brother with an obvious thought in mind that she didn't voice. She turned back to Max, all sweet smiles again. "I mean, it's cute! Really! It's a fuckin' shame that you had to cut the dress up to make it work—I would totally wear this," she added as though it were a compliment, her hand sliding down Max's arm.

"Didn't one of them die of AIDS?" Nate chimed in. "Or wait, was the whole show about AIDS? Or am I thinking about Rent..." He fell silent, then turned to his makeshift cocktail as his sister cast what could only be interpreted as subtle shade at their neighbor. He rolled his eyes and tried to come to the rescue the very moment Mercy stopped talking.

"And the dress isn't ruined," he added. "A half decent seamstress would have that fixed, no problem. You'd never even notice." He shook his head and cut his eyes toward Max. "Don't let her get to you. She just gets like this sometimes. All... prickly."

Max honestly hadn't noticed Mercy's little jab until Nate drew attention to it, but she was in too much of a good mood to care. "Ohh it's all good," she waved him off, "it's just a costume, I don't wear stuff like this all the time. Really, it was this, or a black catsuit," she grinned. At least the dress made her feel more like she was at a party.

She took another good sip from her glass, enjoying the nice pleasant burn from the rum. "Thanks again for this," she said, tipping her glass to Nate, "not all heroes wear capes."

"So...you guys are new here," she said, sidling up a little closer and hushing her voice just a little. "How much do you know about...our building?" she asked, grinning conspiratorially.

Mercy threw an arm around Nate's at Max's comment about heroes, dangling slightly (the drink clearly going straight to her head), until she pulled away at the potential implication of gossip and dirt.

"What, besides the fact that it's straight crazy? And I thought I went overboard with Halloween decorations, but then again, I think I have a right to since it's my birthday..." She shrugged, nonchalant even as her eyes moved between the two to gauge their response.

"So dish. What's up with this place? Even without the decorations, it was pretty spooooky," she finished, drawing out the last word theatrically.

"Understatement of the year," Nate said. He punctuated the thought with another generous sip from his drink. "This place is crazy by her standards." His index finger uncurled from the side of his cup, pointing at Mercy. He knew the moment he did it the reaction it would elicit, but he could not resist, all the same.

"I've always slept like a baby," he lied, "but since I moved here? Weird dreams like you wouldn't believe. Then I wake up and leave the apartment and the whole damn floor's changed. Is it always like this?"

"Yeah, dreams are a thing here," she nodded to them sympathetically. "I once had this dream, no joke, that I was an actual cat. Like, roaming around my apartment and playing with my cat Cali, and she was explaining to me about how to be a cat, and play like a cat...and she kept calling me 'my queen'...it was weird," she giggled carelessly, taking another sip of punch. "Wow that's strong," she laughed.

"So there's also the weird shit that happens sometimes on the different floors...my favourite was when one of the top floors turned into, like, a desert paradise? there was fruit trees and crocodiles and sandy beach and a river...I literally didn't leave until it was over, except to steal some roasted meat and bottles of rum off some sort of altar on another floor," she said, as if they should already have accepted what she was saying as normal.

Mercy's mouth opened to immediately refute Nate's words—the crazy, the sleeping—but Max was already talking before she could get the thoughts out. The idea of a desert island paradise made her click her mouth shut, though only for a moment.

"Hold up, so you're saying what they did on the floors isn't a holiday thing? They do this regularly?" A beach theme wasn't exciting to her, but the thought of some in-house bar was. She wished Nate hadn't brought up the dream because she didn't want to describe the, ahem, gory details to anyone, but it seemed like that whole conversational tangent was being quickly glossed over.

"Wait, did you say crocodiles?" Mercy blinked, trying to wrap her head around the whole thing. "So they did some blow up pool toys with some, what, sand spread around in a corner? I guess that's...nice. Did they ever say why?"

"Or how?"

Nate shook his head. From the look on his face it was clear, dreams or no, he had no inclination whatsoever to believe Max's tales. Decorations were one thing. Ecosystems and living creatures were quite another. Mercy's explanations made far more sense, and surely, he told himself, that was what Max had meant. So he kept an ear out for her agreement as he returned to the table, picking at the deviled eggs in search of a particularly appetizing one. The liquor sat heavy on his stomach, and it seemed wise to let something promptly soak it up.

"Apparently Stephan is as good with interior design as he is with eyeliner," he offered. "Or he's got a little horde of Keebler elves coming out of the woodwork to help him overnight." He cut an amused look to his sister. "I mean it's not the worst thing we've seen go down in our house, you know?"

"Well, I wouldn't say it's a regular thing, but maybe occasional? So that time that floor turned into a desert - a real desert, no fake plastic shit," she added, looking right at Mercy, "there was other stuff going on the other floors. One was all white marble with strange altars, one was completely open sky with walls of tall grass...one was literally one giant log cabin with never-ending kegs of beer...anyway, that only happened the one time. Then there was the time that none of the floors made sense. I opened my apartment door and it led right into someone else's living room. Like whaaaat?" she laughed, emptying the last of her punch and shifting to pur herself another cup.

"But seriously..." she leant in close and stage-whispered, "this place is not normal. We were literally locked in the building for a full week, and when we got out, nobody noticed we were gone."

Mercy blinked, unable to comprehend what Max was describing. She could imagine it well enough, but believe it? Even with the one dream she and Nate had shared, this was all too much. She bit her lip to keep from laughing in Max's face.

"So why do you stay?" She had to almost shout over the music.

Nate nodded, seconding the question. He himself had no plans to leave, but this might have been due, at least in part, to his wholesale dismissal of what Max was describing. The changes he had witnessed were minor by comparison. Even the keys and the strange, changed rooms surely had some rational explanations, even if he was not privy to it. Whole floors altered into genuine ecosystems was another thing altogether. He caught himself wondering, uncharitably, about Max's potential drug use. He popped a deviled egg into his mouth and moved back to Mercy's side, covering his mouth as he chewed.

Max blinked in surprise at the question. "Because I live here?" she said simply, a hint of a question at the end of the statement.

"And...I mean, really, I gotta be honest with you, it's fun," she said with a grin. "Where else can you live where all kinds of crazy stuff happens to break up the monotony?" she asked, taking a sip from her newly refilled punch. "And I gotta say, after all that buildup this month with the keys and the stuff in the hallways, I'm kind of disappointed with this standard-assed party," she said, looking at the pumpkins and streamers with a bit of a disappointed frown. "But whatever, they can't always knock it out of the park, can they? Maybe they used up their budget already on the desert thing," she mused with a shrug.

Shrugging, Mercy was inclined to agree with Max's assessment; it certainly was a lot of build up for such a small payoff.

"Well, let's liven this party up a little bit," she said, grabbing Nate's hand. "It's my birthday, and the birthday girl wants to dance." Holding her brother's hand over her head, she started steering the small group and their drinks toward the criminally empty dance floor, just as "Purple People Eater" started to play.
