everybody's comin'; leave your body at the door
Who: EVERYONE.
What: The Pax Halloween Party, part one.
Where: Pax Letale apartment complex, rec room.
When: 7 p.m., Oct. 31.
Notes: Hi guys! Sorry this took so long to get up; things have been pretty crazy here. But here is the Halloween event! This is the first part, and should be treated like a regular event; please mark where and when your character can be found throughout the room. Please remember that your character must be wearing their Halloween mask provided to them at the beginning of the month in order to gain admission to the rec room party. This is crucial for the second part of the event. If there are two people in a thread, please ask permission before entering; if you have any questions, please contact the mods! Now on with the show!

Despite the general eeriness of the building at large, those who make their way downstairs to the Halloween party will find it decorated to entertain. The lobby's emptiness will have been filled by a set of bloody sticker footprints from the elevator leading toward the rec room, through the door of which lights and music blare into the hallway. Stephan is waiting outside the entry way, dressed to the nines like a bald Morticia Addams, his red nails clicking on a clipboard as he takes note of who's arrived and who hasn't. Those who aren't dressed appropriately—read: with their Pax-provided masks—will be denied entry until they go and retrieve said item. Upon entry, Stephan will make the remark that attendees are to enjoy themselves, and that a special guest of honor will arrive a few hours later.

Those who make it past the drag queen bouncer will find a rather ghoulishly delightful party inside. Orange and black streamers hang in wound loops from the walls, pinned carefully to the molding near the ceiling. Bats, cartoon cutouts of witches flying over a waning moon, black cats, and pumpkins all cover the walls from top to bottom; carved pumpkins are set on every available table space, lit and flickering in the low light. The doors to the pool area are open, a disco ball shining orange, black and white specks over everything as classic Halloween hits are played from a nearby boombox. The pool itself glows a ghostly green.

Back inside the rec room, a long table opposite the pool table is laden with hot dog finger treats, feet made of meatloaf, speared deviled eggs painted like eyeballs, and every other appropriately-themed Halloween food item an attendee could think of. In the middle of it all, amid black and orange plates and clear, orange-y cups, is a bowl filled generously with store-bought candy. On either side are punch bowls filled with green and red liquid; the former will taste like apple cider, the latter a regular tropical punch. Neither are alcoholic, but attendees are welcome to sneak their own into the party—Stephan's not watching that closely.

Overall, the party seems normal—too normal for some, though no one will find any mislaid bear traps, poisoned candy or razor-blade laden apples anywhere in the vicinity. Might as well enjoy it while it lasts....

Re: Nish/James - 7:30, near the punch

Nish felt a wave of relief when he didn't make a big deal out of the punch, letting out a little sigh and then stepping towards him for a half-embrace. She flattened her hand against his chest and stole a quick kiss, then stepped away a little to admire his outfit. Or rather, him in the outfit. "Yeah," she said, glancing around at the familiar faces around them and their creepy concierge, and then back at him. "It's...a party," she said with an almost disappointed look. "I guess after everything that's happened recently I was expecting something more, you know? Not just...punch and candy and pumpkins." After a pause she shrugged and shook her head as if dismissing her own words. "Whatever. Here, have a piece of foot. It's actually pretty good," she said, offering her plate to him and trying hard to not look over at the punch again.

"How was work? I'm surprised they didn't force you to stay late on the creepiest night of the year," she said lightly, but wanting to take it back right away. She'd been doing her best to keep her frustrations with his schedule from him, but every once in a while a crack showed what she really felt, making her feel guilty for thinking it. "Sorry, that...I didn't mean it like that," she frowned.

"I'm quite alright with just a party," James noted, pouring himself a cup of radioactive-looking punch. This stuff looked like petrol, but it tasted like apples when he took a sip. It was perhaps a party more fitting for primary school students, but again, better than demons rising up from the earth or coming out of the television screen. He really wouldn't put much past this place.

He wasn't particularly hungry but he took some of the feetloaf anyway, breaking off a piece with his fork and tasting it - not bad, not bad. The deviled eggs were next, he decided to try one of those. "Work went well enough." And no, James wasn't an idiot - he could tell it wasn't actually a question inquiring about how his day had gone, but instead a glimpse of Nishka's frustrations. Unfortunately, he couldn't do much to soothe them - he wished she wasn't upset about how he had to dive into a job he'd just received in his actual field after three or four years of being forced to tend bar once his witness protection programme stipend ran out, but apparently she was.

The average work week for a psychiatrist was about 48 hours; he may be pulling a little more than that now but it'd settle soon enough. They both just had to be patient, as he'd already mentioned to her. "What about you, win any cases?" he asked, sipping his punch.

She watched him carefully when he tried the second flavour of punch, and was relieved that he didn't seem to notice anything off about it, despite the fact that it looked like it was glowing. She busied herself getting a glass before the alcohol fairy could ruin that one for her too.

"Well, today was a court day, and it went pretty well, she said, grabbing a few deviled eggs for herself and then shifting out of the way so other people could get to them. She'd been the 'bad guy's today, got someone charged with assault off on a technicality and he was let off with a slap on the wrist. She knew she should feel bad about it, but the truth was she really enjoyed winning. She caught a glimpse of Stephan ordering someone to put their mask on and grinned.

"What do you think of Morticia over there," she asked with a smirk, "I swear, sometimes he dresses better than I do."

He took 'went pretty well' as a win, and James chuckled warmly. Law was a tricky sort of thing, lots of loopholes and interpretations; he knew that most attorneys weren't trusted as far as you could throw them - probably for good reason. But it was the nature of the beast.

"Sounds like a victory of a day, then," he said, moving down as well - now that he had punch, and had consumed some finger foods, he could just blend in and listen to 'Morticia's' instructions to enjoy himself. Fat chance. He felt tense and prickly, and couldn't really shake the feelings either.

But he was here anyway, so. May as well attempt to have a nice time. He sort of hoped he ran into Alex; he hadn't seen her since their gym meeting and he wanted to plan something more concrete for a pub crawl. "Whatever tickles his pickle, I suppose?" James had to laugh a little at Stephan's choice of costume - well, no one could say he didn't fill out that dress nicely. "I must say, you look worlds better in your ensemble, darling."

She smiled, a blush creeping across her cheeks that added to the flush already present from the alcohol she'd had. "Thank you," she said, and then lifted a hand to smooth over his lapel. "You're looking pretty amazing yourself," she said, her smile shifting into a somewhat mischievous grin. "I know you were going for Mr. Darcy, but I'm just getting this pirate vibe off you," she said, taking in the long coat and the low v-neck that exposed his chest, which her fingers eagerly slid over, leaning in close. "I've got some booty for you to plunder," she said with a grin. "Sorry, I had to," she laughed, stepping back to let him have his personal space back. "I might be a little bit drunk," she admitted, "I'm not used to it anymore."

Pirate vibe? Really? James didn't think so, but then again, that was the glorious effect of alcohol - it just got the word vomit going. "I suppose that was meant to be a compliment?" he guessed. And it wasn't like he was disappointed by Nishka's admission that she was sloshed (she hadn't known the punch was spiked, though it must be ethanol-level booze in there to get someone pissed so quickly) but rather, he simply wished it could have been a stress-free get-together in the ol' rec room.

But he'd just deal with it, like he did everything else. "We'll see how that plundering goes," he smiled, though it didn't reach the blue sea of his eyes this time. He wasn't about to take advantage, with her being literally punch-drunk. "I've got to be up early tomorrow, so staying late here is likely not on the agenda," he added, sliding an arm around her waist. "Not that it seems like much of a happening party anyway."

She was grinning at him, guiltily enjoying the buzz from her accidental alcohol consumption, and enjoying his reaction to her pirate comment, and very much looking forward to a later plundering, when he just had to stick a pin in that balloon. Almost immediately her smile faded, and though she didn’t pull away from him, her posture changed as disappointment robbed her of happiness. “Ohh. Right,” she said, no longer able to temper her reaction with logical thoughts like ‘of course he has to work, it’s the middle of the week, and you have to work tomorrow too.’ It didn’t matter that they were both responsible adults with jobs, drunk brain wanted what it wanted, and logic didn’t live there anymore.

James presumed that Nishka had work as well, but he wasn't about to bring that up. Unlikely she'd see the rationale in it anyway, not in the current state of intoxication. "Sorry, love," he apologised, though what for, he couldn't tell you. Committing the crime of responsibility?

"I've a normal weekend coming up, however," he added. Both Saturday and Sunday off, and he was quite looking forward to it. Maybe Cheeto the cat would even let him sleep in, rather than yowling sadly for his morning feeding (though if this cat had his way, he would never stop eating). "We can do something fun, if you'd like?"

She pouted and nodded. Part of her knew he was right, and that she should just accept the offer of a fun weekend and let it go, but the other unfortunately stronger part of her had had enough of her perceived 'neglect'. "Yeah, it's just..." she sighed, trying and failing to stop her words from leaving her mouth, and knowing full well she'd regret this later. "I'm just...frustrated," she almost whined. "I feel like I never get to see you, like...you just got back and you're gone again. I understand that you have to work, but do you have to work so goddamn much?" Immediately, she knew she'd gone too far, and she looked away, towards the food table, eyes landing on the offending punch that had started all this and really wanting nothing more than to go over there and get another cup.

For fuck's sake. He'd had this job for not even a month and already Nishka was going to stir the pot of drama and angst - at a chintzy Halloween party in their building. Great. "You've really no idea how important it is to me to actually be working as a psychiatrist again, do you?" he asked, but it was a rhetorical question - he wasn't interested in the response.

She also had no idea what sort of life James had lived when he was in Witness Protection, because she'd never asked. He tried not to assume the worst, that it wasn't important to her, but right now that was how he felt.

"Yes, I've got to work so goddamn much. Now if you'll excuse me, I need some air." He tossed the empty punch cup into the rubbish bin, and left - Nishka was drunk but he was her boyfriend, not her keeper, and he wasn't here to watch her constantly. Or actually, he wasn't even certain of anything anymore but perhaps some fresh air would help him clear his head.

She opened her mouth to respond, but he cut her off, turning away and leaving. "Ja- James" she called after him, anger and remorse and fear suddenly battling for dominance inside her. She watched him go, hot angry tears filling her eyes, and then turned away, towards the punch bowl, where she filled another cup full of the red candy flavoured liquid.
