Who: Aura and Pierce
What: A dream
Where: Aura's head
When: After Billy's dream
Warnings: None

The time between dreams was so much nothing that Aura didn't remember it, and it wasn't until someone else entered the dreamscape that she noticed. Slowly, slowly the dreamscape had been becoming a physical, tangible version of her myth's space. And on the night that the stranger entered the dream the space was almost alive with the growth of itself, a sense of building in the cold dark air. It was as if Niflheim had taken root in the sleeping mind of the girl in the hospital bed. Billy had been to the place once in its infancy, when it was no more than an idea.

It was underground, and underfoot was craggy black rock. And the dreamer would arrive at the edge of a crystal bridge precariously suspended. Beyond it, woods. Beyond that, darkness and a threshold, large and looming.

Pierce hadn't been sleeping well lately - or at all lately, but enough was enough. He finally decided it was time to either take a sleeping pill or conk himself over the head with a frying pan. Committing hari-kari with his sword collection was not advised at this point in time.

And when he slept, he barely ever remembered his dreams when he awoke. But this was a new experience for him, an experience where the dream setting felt strangely familiar. Had he been here before? Did he regularly come here? He couldn't quite place it exactly, yet was aware of something faintly tugging on the strings of his memory. It felt as if he should know what this was. Like it was his doing, his creation...

But then he saw her, and she was awake.

"Olivia..." he murmured as he appeared beside her. "What are you doing here? You scared the hell out of me. Don't tell me I was brought here just to watch you fling yourself off of this bridge."

She looked over at him from her spot on the bridge, and she looked entirely confused for a moment. She was used to Billy wandering into her dreams; he'd been doing it or years. But no one else ever had. She knew she was dreaming, had no doubt about the fact that she was still in her coma, falling deeper every day.

She smiled a moment later. "I'm not that dramatic, Pierce," she said honestly. "I thought you were Billy."

He actually laughed at that - granted it was a bit of a wry chuckle. "I'm sorry to disappoint, Sunshine," Pierce said as he patted his pockets. If this was a dream, could he smoke or would a fire lit up in this place cause the end of the world?

"How about we strike a deal. You wake up, and I'll get out of your dreams."

This was no coincidence. He had been thinking of Olivia nonstop lately. Of course he'd be in a dream with her.

She shook her head. "It's not supposed to happen that way," she told him truthfully, her expression a little sad. She motioned to the castle beyond, and then at the space around them."It feels more real. Listen, you can hear it."

Then, her smile returned and she reached out a hand to him. "Come on, Pierce. I'll show you around."

"You've visited many times?" Pierce asked as he obliged and took her hand, but there was hesitation in the movement at first, because she couldn't stay here. It didn't matter how real it felt; it wasn't her reality now.

He didn't understand why everything seemed so familiar though. Had he dreamed of it all before but just didn't remember the images? It was possible. But when he actually did take a moment to listen, he knew what she meant. "I feel like I've been here before too. How strange."

She led him across the bridge, and she led him through the woods and into the huge stone building beyond. To say it was a castle would be too kind, really, but when they entered the large main doors the inside was Aura's apartment to the last detail.

She settled onto her couch, and she waited for him to join her.

"Maybe you have been here," she said. "I don't think it's mine, not originally," she said, because she didn't feel like she'd created this place in her mind. It was more like it was taking form from something, something and somewhere she felt comfortable and like she belonged.

"Billy's been here too," she told him.

Well, now that was strange. He hadn't expected the inside to look like a regular apartment - where was the serpent venom meant to torment the murderers and adulterers? That thought died as quickly as it arrived because how could he have known what it was supposed to be like? Again, the annoying fly buzzing around, telling him that this was oddly familiar, made itself known. He wanted to squash it with an industrial-sized swatter.

Pierce sat down next to Olivia, turning to face her. "Did you work things out with Billy, somewhat?" he wanted to know. If they were regularly meeting in dreams, perhaps it was possible. "I brought him to see you. He was upset...not that I blame him."

"I told him that he had to be kind to Simon, but I don't think he listened," she said. She too knew that the inside of the Threshold - that's what it was called, she knew, the building - was not supposed to look like this. The sound of water filtered in where there was none and hisses could be heard in the shadows, but she just turned on her TV and looked at him again. "He said he hasn't been able to walk since he saw himself glowing in the mirror. Do you think the mirrors have something to do with use seeing each other in dreams for all those years?"

"Kind? I hardly think so," Pierce scoffed. Even if his son did glow like bronze in a furnace a la Jesus Christ, Pierce still didn't think that he was wrong to be upset with Simon. "Olivia, he almost killed you." This was stated plainly, though he tried to keep the anger out of his tone.

Ah, the hisses. He heard the sounds then, unsure if they were real or just his mind playing tricks on him because they were supposed to be there. Her question was a good distraction, however. "Probably so," he admitted. "There has to be a connection. What that is, I'm not sure of yet. But it's not...it's like the gift you have. It's not just coincidence, it's not just something in the air. It's something else."

"He needs people to try to understand," she said, leaning forward. "If I'm gone, he needs people to care. Billy is... he isn't like us, Pierce. He's good in a way normal people can't be. He can help."

She paused then. "Do you know what he wouldn't tell me? What Billy wouldn't tell me?"

Pierce's eyes tightened. "If you're gone? No, young lady, listen to me." He held her shoulders gently, but there was a fierce sense of resolution in his icy blues that wouldn't be compromised. "Unless you're that professional boxer on the third floor and are in a match with someone, you don't hit women. You just don't do it. I taught my son that, I taught him how to respect someone. No matter what the situation is, you walk away. It's not that difficult. And let me tell you something else. Life? It's fucking terrible. He's hurting, he's angry, sure, everyone is at some point but that doesn't give him the right - " A pause for a figurative thunderstorm to flash behind the blue, "To do what he did. No one has the right to hurt you, Olivia. You need to understand that. Billy doesn't need to understand what Simon did. He's good, yes, I know that. But he's not going to think what Simon did was justified, and he shouldn't. Because it wasn't."

He cupped her face then, and kissed her forehead before he pulled back - obviously irritated. Not at her, but at her brother obviously. "What do you mean? Wouldn't tell you about what?" Oh, fuck.

All the bluster and thunder made her smile in a fond and entertained way. Pierce might not have all of Billy's beatific goodness to him, but man did she like him. He was honest, and that mattered, and she suspected he would handle even a Borg invasion with this same level of angered control. "I know what Casper did was wrong," she said, switching names as easily as if it was switching lanes. "And I know Billy doesn't get it, but Billy's the only person good enough to help him even without getting it." It was said with as much force and conviction as his own words, and the threshold around them seem to amplify the words a moment before slumbering once more.

She looked into those ice blue eyes when he asked his final question, and she just quirked a brow, voice thoughtful. "You know something too," she guessed. "I asked Billy if finding Casper's real family might help, and he went strange. He might have even stopped glowing for a minute."

"He has to want help, darling," Pierce said, glancing around at their surroundings and then back to her. Creepy, yes, but he was used to what could be considered as such. Therefore, he was perfectly content to have a conversation here with Olivia. She was awake, sort of, and that was all he wanted. "Of course Billy would help him but you wanted to help him too, and look what happened." Needless to say, if Simon attempted this crap with Billy, then Pierce would eviscerate that brooding artist cocksneeze, no questions asked. "Only he is responsible for the choices he makes. And, quite frankly, he shouldn't expect compassion and kindness if he just goes around being an asshole and then justifies it with a sob story. Fuck that."

A brow was quirked in return, a mirror gesture of hers. "Of course Billy went strange. Why the hell would you think Casper would be mature enough to handle meeting his real family?"

"I don't think Casper had it as good as I did. His family, his adoptive family, seemed nice enough," she admitted, "but he's so insecure." She took a deep breath, trying to figure out how to explain differences she hadn't found words for yet. "I was raised by a very loud, very nurturing amazing family. I was always different." She grinned. "I'm a strange freak, in case you hadn't noticed. Instead of making that a bad thing, they ruffled my hair and hugged me and loved me because of it. I didn't fit in, and they weren't like me, but we all loved each other anyway. I don't think Simon had that. He's insecure, and he takes everything as a personal slight. He's like a Vulcan when something goes wrong and their emotions are all over the place."

She shrugged. "I think he needs to ask them why, Pierce. I don't think it has anything to do with maturity. I don't feel like I need to ask, because they found a fantastic family for me, whatever the reason."

He could see the differences - he knew of them, sure, but Pierce still didn't think the differences justified anything. Casper could have been tossed to the wolves, just due to that spine-tingling horror that he gave off as a baby, but no. He still was put into a loving home regardless. And now he was an adult, and thus should act accordingly - but instead he backed up Pierce's original foreboding train of thought with his behavior.

"No matter how he was raised, he's not allowed to punish people for anything," Pierce said as a matter-of-fact. "His anger cannot be released like this. You know that as well as I do. And it does have everything to do with maturity because how is he going to ask them why? With his fists? He's not ready. He can't even handle talking about his biological family, that was why he was so mad at me. Because I knew things from you already."

She couldn't argue with that last bit, because it was true. The whole time she'd been in his childhood home he'd never introduced her as his sister. "I'm different, Pierce. Being related to me isn't exactly a party. It's okay if he doesn't want anyone to know we're related." It stung a little, yes, but it was his choice.

Pierce shook his head. "You're not different, Olivia," he said firmly. "You're a lovely young lady and he should feel lucky to have a sister like you. The fact that he's a complete asshole to you really bothers me." That was an understatement. Casper needed to grow the fuck up, and stat. "It's not okay."

He glanced at her, almost amused. But there was still a sadness he felt because he didn't want to lose her - not now, not ever. "I suppose we all see ourselves differently than others see us, but I will continue to demand that you be treated with the respect you deserve, Unicorn. Sorry, but that's what I do."

She laughed at the term of endearment, and she did something entirely unlike herself and hugged him. If her family could see her, they would all die of the shock of it, no doubt. She imagined her mother dropping an entire fuente of taquitos, and she smiled as she pulled back. "Then what do you suggest, uncle Pierce?"

The hug was returned, and he almost expected to wake up because it all felt so real. But how many hugs would he get from her after this? The fact that it may very well be the last one made him tighten his grip slightly before she pulled back. It wouldn't be a goodbye hug. She wasn't going anywhere.

"Well, I won't kill him," Pierce said with a sigh, but was fighting a smile regardless. "And while he does need help, you are not a punching bag and neither is my son. Casper is going to have to acknowledge that he needs help. Trying to make him admit it will only lead to bad things...again."

Oh, and one other thing! "I'm teaching you how to swordfight and throw a dagger properly. And giving you Mace. So you can blind him next time he tries to lay a hand on you."

It felt real because it was becoming real. The longer she stayed in the place, the more tangible and real it became and would become. "You'll help him," she said, and it wasn't so much a statement as a question, even if she phrased it as a statement.

When he offered to show her how to defend herself, she smiled and then she laughed warmly. "I can kill people with my pinkie, you remember?"

"He doesn't want my help." Pierce was surprised that she had even asked. Why would she ever think that? "He doesn't even want me to call him Casper, why would he listen to a damn word I say?" The thought actually made him chuckle. That kid was stubborn as fuck. Behold, it was the Gregory Stubborn Streak (tm) at work once more.

He laughed too, eyes crinkling at the corners when he smiled. "I remember. But I'd still feel better if you had Mace." Since that wasn't deadly, and Olivia would probably have problems with killing someone. "I won't put a pointy blade in your hand yet though. Maybe someday, and you can meet Nate too. We often swordfight together."

"What he wants and what he needs are two different things," she said, and then she smiled. "He'll listen to you because you're Captain Kirk, Pierce, and everyone listens to Captain Kirk." It was a fond confession and, for Aura, a great compliment.

"Who's Nate?" she asked, sitting forward with the curiosity of someone who has been too long asleep and longs for news and people from the waking world.

"That will end well for both parties, I'm sure." Pierce was convinced that even going within six feet of Simon would mean that Pierce would suddenly feel the urge to engage in a round of fisticuffs, but he was flattered at the comparison to Captain Kirk all the time. "You're a Trekkie, Olivia?" he asked, holding up one hand in typical Vulcan greeting. "I can see that about you."

And how to describe Nate! He was a barrel of laughs, that was for sure. "He's my best friend," Pierce replied easily. "Since college, anyway. He works with me now. I think you'd like him. Similar sense of humor and all."

"When I wake up, I insist on an introduction," she said, and it was the most positive thing she'd said in their entire conversation. The comment, and the certainty that waking would come, seemed to weigh on the the Threshold, make it less solid and less real, and Aura looked up at the clearing in the ceiling that was not part of the dream, that was unfamiliar. "You're waking," she said knowingly, and then she looked back at him, and she clutched his hand tightly. "Take care of Casper."

"You insist? Well, alright, you shall have one then." He meant it too, and he was glad that she was becoming more positive about her return to the world of the non-comatose folk. "We'll do something fun, like hijack a cosplay group and you can wear your work uniform."

Oh, Pierce would 'take care' of Casper, alright. Probably not in the way that Olivia was referring to, however. He didn't want to let her down but he also didn't want to make a promise he couldn't keep. "I'll try," was what he settled on, clinging to her hand - not wanting to wake up and leave her here. Tomorrow he would be sitting beside her sleeping form once more, wondering what she was dreaming about.

"Come back soon, Olivia. I need you with me."

Reluctantly, he let go of her hand.

The idea of hijacking a cosplay group brought a smile to her lips and her laughter rung out across the dying dream. She hugged him again, this time tighter, reluctant to let him leave, but then she sat back again. She gave him the same Vulcan greeting he had given her a few minutes earlier, even as she nodded at his request.

"Live long and prosper, uncle Pierce."

And then the dream faded and she was gone again, all silent.
