Who: Tyler & Adam.
What: Awkward early meetings.
Where: Middle school, Garden Grove CA.
When: August 1992. Ish?
Warnings: None [yet].
Notes: Backstory, woo!

Adam had arrived - as he usually did - entirely too early. His father insisted on arriving well before the first bell, eager to boot Adam from the car at the school's front doors before making his way to the high school, and the broom closet he called an office. It was far too soon to go inside; no other students would be milling about, and what friends Adam could claim would certainly not yet be on the grounds. The weather was kind enough, mild in spite of being too goddamned bright for so early in the morning, so he decided to stay outside for a time. An empty bench stood perfectly positioned between the school doors and the speaker mounted on the exterior wall, where later he could easily hear the bell. Adam made his way over to it, rummaging through his bookbag for the portable CD player hidden there.

In a moment he was settled in, headphones fitted over his spiky black hair, his dark eyes watching students trickle into the building. Their shuffling feet and stilted conversations were muffled by Nick Cave's low baritone growling through his ears, a fact Adam found markedly pleasing. He drew his legs up beneath him, his heavy black boots shifting him to lean back on the bench. There he waited, letting "Jack the Ripper" seep through his very pores, until at last he saw a familiar face. Under normal circumstances Adam might never have acknowledged him; they were as different as night and day, and he could not begin to imagine what they might find to discuss. But Billy had mentioned the boy long before they'd met in person, and Billy's opinion carried no small weight with Adam. So in spite of himself he acted, waving to Tyler when he saw him glance his way.

Tyler had made sure his younger sisters got to where they were supposed to be before he even set foot in his own school. It was just part of being the big brother (though he'd have escorted his older sister, too, if she'd have let him), and as an added bonus it made sure he wasn't early to school like some kind of dork. There was no reason to be to school early unless there was football practice in the morning.

Nearly empty backpack hanging loosely on one shoulder, he sauntered up to the building with the strut he'd been practicing all summer. Though he didn't actually expect any of his friends to be hanging around outside, he took a look anyway. It was a surprise to see someone waving, but the guy...

He fumbled mid-strut, and spent the next few seconds trying to recover and figure out why. It was because he was trying to figure out who it was, he decided. Obviously the guy knew him. And it was because he was so weird. Why would he know someone like that, with the spiky hair and the boots (which were actually sort of badass, not something he'd wear but still cool) and the piercing dark eyes and... no, no, the guy's eyes weren't piercing. They were weird. Like the rest of him. Including the boots. Yeah.

Come to think of it, didn't he know him? Sort of? Tyler thought on it for a moment, and then realized... oh, yeah, that friend of Billy's. They hadn't actually talked much, and he hadn't liked the guy when they'd first been introduced because Billy was hanging out with him so much. His name was... Adam, yeah, that was it. Hesitantly - because everything affected his reputation, not for any other reason at all - he lifted a hand to give a casual wave in response, heart beating strangely. Hey, it had been a long walk from dropping Lexie off at her class. Of course his heart was beating fast.

Curiously, Adam found himself somewhat daunted by the awkwardness of that initial greeting. Judging by that falter in the other boy's step, that little hitch between eye contact and returned, slight wave, Adam assumed this friend-of-a-friend barely recognized him. Of course, there was the small matter of Adam's own body language, which he had been told rather exuded standoffishness even when his intentions were otherwise. With this in mind he tried to relax his posture, even going so far as to slip one of the ear pieces to the side. Still, he hedged his bets, one black-painted nail pressing Skip to return the CD to its first track: If the other boy ignored him, another track would already be screaming through the headphones, and the slight could be ignored and downplayed with relative ease.

"Tyler, right?" Adam asked, his head canting curiously as Tyler drew closer. He shifted on the bench, lessening the amount of space he had sprawled his belongings over. His retreat left more than enough room for Tyler, should he decide to linger. "Haven't seen you in a while. Busy summer?"

"Yeah, yo. Uh... Adam?" Tyler glanced down at the spot that Adam had cleared on the bench, but the thought of sitting that close made him feel a little nervous. Reputation, and all that shit. "Yeah. Pretty busy. You know." Except obviously Adam didn't know, since they really were not that well-acquainted. Should he have asked about Adam's summer? Too late to ask now, he'd left the pause too long.

He shifted nervously, trying not to look too closely at the other boy. "So." What else was there to say? Oh, yeah. "Talked to Billy lately?" There, that was something they had in common.

Though Adam registered the stilted nature of the conversation, he chalked it up to unfamiliarity rather than some other, potentially hurtful cause. He ascribed the same meaning to Tyler's unwillingness to sit alongside him, forging bravely on. "Yeah," he said, attempting a nonchalant shrug. "I was over a few days ago. I'm there at least for a while most weekends, I guess. He's getting pretty preoccupied with his music, though. I don't know if he'll have a lot of time now that school's in, too."

He cleared his throat, moving slightly on the bench. One leg was tingling, falling asleep; he unfolded the prickling limb from beneath him, his clunky boot thumping against the ground. "You get bored or anything and he's busy, we should hang out. I've got a few movies I could bring over."
