"It's gonna be okay, baby girl," John said, pressing a kiss to the side of Ruby's head. Though he'd been the one to arrange what was about to happen here, his arm was still wrapped protectively around her as they sat on the sofa. Since the other night, things had been tense, full of fears and anxiety and uncertainty, but the one constant John relied on was that it didn't matter what this panned out as. She was his daughter, he loved her, and he would take care of her to his dying breath. But it didn't make what they were about to do any easier for him to stomach. What if it hurt her again? Hurting her that night, even accidentally as it was with that damned rock salt, was still haunting his waking moments and his nightmares. From the outside, it might look like nothing more than a family meeting with the family priest in the comfort of their home. The den had been rearranged a bit, to the priest's specifications, but there was nothing entirely obvious about the room to suggest what was about to occur. "Father, do I have to let go of her for this?" he asked, the question directed at the priest busy setting things out on one of the side tables next to the sofa. Though the question was asked, John really didn't want to hear any other answer than 'no', so he could keep holding Ruby tight and trying to pretend that would be enough to save her. |
