Standing in the middle of one of the smaller treasure chambers in the palace, Cimorene rest her hands on her hips and looked around, a handkerchief holding back her long black hair. "Set that suit up over there, I think," she said to a purple and black scaled dragon, gesturing to the suit of armour in question and then to the far left corner. "Yes, Princess," the dragon, who had not decided what gender it wanted to be yet, said with a nod. "Cimorene," she corrected as patiently as possible, struggling to not roll her eyes at the beast.
"Cimorene!" a voice bellowed through the halls and the princess sighed, dropping her hands from her waist. "Just finish up with that pile and I should be back," she instructed before heading out in search of Kazul, who could be heard tossing her crown against a wall in the grand hall. "You really should stop that," she scolded, entering the vast room and perching on the arm of a chair. Kazul turned to look at her and Cimorene's teasing tone dropped immediately. "The wizards are back, aren't they?" she asked in a rather hoarse voice.
An hour later, Cimorene, armed with a smallish sword with a scabbard that made the wearer invincible and a small sack of clothing and supplies, made her way through the Caves of Fire and Night, accompanied by one of Kazul‘s dragon staff. She was being sent to the giants, to enlist their help with the war that Kazul was convinced was coming, and therefore was in one of her best travelling dresses, and wore her best crown. The caves were dangerous on a normal day, but now that Cimorene knew that the wizards had made their way back into them, she was exceedingly more nervous than normal. All of a sudden, the caves went dark and Cimorene stopped in her tracks and sighed. "How long this time?" she wondered aloud, provoking a grunt from her dragon companion, keeping a hand on the wall of the cave she was in to keep her head about her.
The darkness did not lift as normal, but instead seemed to be filled with pinpricks of light. Coloured light. Squinting, Cimorene struggled to see and took a step forward. With a snap of fingers, the world came into sharp relief again, but it was not the world she knew. Standing on a busy street corner, the pricks of light became street lights and neon signs. Gasping, Cimorene looked around, her hand on the hilt of her sword. "Where the..." she wondered, stopping when she realised that she was no longer with her scaly friend, but completely alone. At that moment, a horn sounded behind her and Cimorene spun around, her sword fairly leaping into her hand, and she brandished it at a truck rolling past, not re-sheathing it when the danger was gone. This place was larger than any cave she'd ever been in, and though she felt the breeze on her face, along with the rain, there couldn't be any way she was outside. It was dark, not warm and light as it should have been in the Enchanted Forest. "What is that and where am I?" she asked, to no one in particular, pushing the rain out of her face.
