Ministry Gala Event!
Characters: OPEN TO ALL. Please tag with your own character(s) when you comment/they arrive.
Setting: The Ministry Atrium, Level 8, beginning at 7 PM and running until midnight
Summary: It's the Halloween ministry gala/party! Come in costume (muggle or otherwise), in elegant wear, or in dress robes. The event begins at 7PM with refreshments, appetizers, finger foods and cocktails. Desserts are served later in the evening, but the cocktails remain available all night long. There is no full dinner, as it would be quite unwieldy with the amount of people expected to attend. The dance floor is open, a live band is playing, and the atmosphere is almost aggressively pleasant. For safety reasons, wands are being checked (surrendered) at the entrances. Unless your character is on-duty at the party, he or she will not have her wand on his/her person after entering.
Rating: Let's go with R for now, as there will be some dark occurrences later in the evening. We will update as necessary.

The event coordinators at the Ministry of Magic were in fine form in the hours leading up to the start of the gala. Everything had to be perfect, and not just in appearances. The atrium had been decorated in gold and silver, slightly reflective, to capture light and brighten the large, spacious room. The band was in place by 6:30, playing quiet music that set the mood. Off to either side, slightly out of the way, were two cocktail tables, fully stocked. There was also a number of wait staff who would be walking around with trays of red or white wine as well as champagne.

The attention to the decor was due to the head events coordinator, one Ismay Plimpton, who was an absolute perfectionist. With attention down to the very last detail, she was very nearly driving the Minister mad with her questions and comments, not to mention crucial changes. Her voice and general looks had Kingsley Shacklebolt nearly thinking her related to Delores Umbridge, if Ismay weren't so remarkably pleasant and likable.

With his assurance that everything was just fine, Ismay hurried off, gently but firmly reprimanding some poor chap setting candles afloat too low for her liking. The ceiling above twinkled like night stars, and between that, the candles, and the reflective decorations, the room was perfectly lit.

Everything was ready. All they needed now were the guests.

As the man hit her, Lavender stumbled backwards instinctively holding on to the man's arm to balance herself. Goodness if she had actually fallen that would have been one of the worst things that could happen. However, it was more the shock than actually force that had her uneasy for a moment.

Really now that she had a moment to actually look at the man who had nearly derailed, she supposed that this could have turned out far worse. He was quite fit. A smile fell across her lips as she replied. "You know, I think that you should make it up to me or else I spend the whole night thinking that the only thing that well-dressed men want to do it bump into me." She wasn't sure what exactly was motivating her right now, although she could make a few good guesses, but she was determined to have a good time.

The woman he'd bumped was striking. The color of her dress, the elegant mask, the lilt of her voice. Adrian idly wondered who she was, if he knew her at all. Her comment caught his attention though and he very nearly smiled. "Were I not on security duty tonight, I'd ask to make it up to with with a dance. In lieu of that, I hope you don't mind if I offer you a drink and some conversation?"

Adrian had manners, certainly. They'd been ingrained into him and he certainly had had to attend enough society functions to put them to good use. It was nearly instinct at this point.

Lavender was truly in rare form tonight. Despite skipping her usual afternoon nap today she wasn't feeling tired and even with the three of swords sitting in the back of her mind, she was enjoying herself. And sure, maybe she was falling back on coping mechanisms, but that wasn't a bad thing. She was a twenty-three year old woman who had needs that had gone unfulfilled for far too long.

"Well, if that is the best you can do," she said teasingly, "I happily accept." She had been en route for another glass of win and having a bit of (male) company certainly wasn't unwelcome. After all, it might just turn into dancing away. Lavender Brown could be a good bit convincing when she tried and tonight she was trying.

Adrian politely offered his arm and led her to the nearer of the two bars. He divided his attention between her and brief scans of the room, lingering once or twice on anyone who looked a but too tipsy for their own good. So far there'd been no trouble, but the night was still wearing on.

"What will you have? Wine? Champagne? Something else?" For himself he was simply going to have apple cider, not liquored. He couldn't drink on the job, after all.

Although she should have, and probably did, know better, Lavender saw the fact that he was on duty as a bit of a challenge. "A Riesling would be lovely." It would be her third glass and if she was smart it should be her last for a little while. Otherwise that pleasant feeling might turn into something a bit messy, which would probably ruin her night.

"So, Mr D-M-L-E, is everything under control and going smoothly?" She could have asked for his name, but that might mean that she would have to give hers and she wasn't sure she wanted to do that just yet. There was something about the mystery not having a name and the use of masks that she liked.

"Then a Riesling is it," Adrian replied, obtaining one for her. He handed her the glass, noting that she hadn't asked his name. He neither offered it nor asked hers. A fair number of people seemed to like the ability to play mysterious behind masks, and so long as it wasn't dangerous, he saw no reason to destroy that.

"So far, yes," he replied. His eyes flicked over to a man speaking loudly, almost angrily as he reached into his pockets, but all he pulled out was a wallet from which he withdrew a picture to thrust into his companion's face. the second man's face feel and their arguing seemed to stop. whatever had been brewing had been nipped in the bud without needing his interference. Adrian sighed inwardly, glad at least for the woman's company. Otherwise this would be a long and uninteresting night.

"I trust you're enjoying yourself so far?" He asked the question as he returned his attention to her.

She followed his gaze to the small incident across the room. Normally she wouldn't have seen that sort of thing, but she needed to know what caught his attention. Not that she was bothered, one of the first things he said was he was working.

"I have been pleasantly surprised. I mean the desserts left something to be desired, but then this man bumped into me and cards aren't spread yet, so..." Lavender shrugged, casually taking a sip from her glass.

Adrian didn't have much taste for sweets and so had not had any at all, so he could only take her opinion on that without supplying his own. Her comment did yield a bit of a smile then. "What does it say about your night then, that my bumping into you seems to be something of a high point?"

He sipped his drink, keeping it in his off hand, so his wand had was kept free, in case he needed to draw it in a hurry. Two tipsy witches dress as mermaids - teeth and all - went by, laughing and bumping into each other. Adrian sidestepped them, his gaze returning to the woman he was speaking to.

Lavender laughed lightly at his question. "Probably that I've spent the past half hour talking about said desserts, but that comes with the territory. I'm a baker by trade." She offered, felling like she could share that little fact because it wasn't particularly revealing. "Or it could just mean that anyone actually pulling off that jacket has to be a high point of my night."

There was also the truth that it revealed that to some extent Lavender was out of her element. When she was younger, she imagined this sort of night would be common place. Now, it was more of a special treat when the right opportunity presented itself.

"Although, you do clearly have a high standard of conversation to overcome if you want to keep such a coveted status." Really, anything would be better than be talking about food quality. She did that enough at work.

"A baker?" Adrian queried. He personally did not have a sweet tooth, but he certainly knew of others who did. It might do well to ask further. "Do you have or work at a bakery anywhere nearby?" Adrian lived in Scotland, but spent a great deal of his time in London, both the wizarding and Muggle sides, due to his job. "Unless asking about your place of work comes too close to asking your identity," he added as an afterthought.

A couple walked past, the lady dressed as what could only be a snake, and the man on her arm as a black bird, perhaps a raven. They got themselves drinks and stayed nearby chatting. Adrian took not of them and did another scan of the room before turning back to his companion. "Apparently I do," he replied. "I'll endeavor not to fall from my unexpected pedestal. "Is your Riesling to taste? It's rather unfortunate I'm working. I'd much prefer to not have to divide my attention between my duties and our conversation."

"The wine is quite nice, and so far your divided attentions isn't giving me a complex, so I think we're okay for the moment." And maybe just maybe, she felt a bit safer knowing that if something did happen she was wanting around someone equipped to handle the situation. For while, Lavender was a at times a lot of other things, sometimes she just needed to know that someone else could be looking out for her.

She considered his first question for a moment - was it too revealing or just information enough? It wasn't like she was the only baker who worked in Diagon Alley, not even the sole baker at Rising Loaf. "I do work in Diagon Alley making everything from your run of the mill scones and soda bread to more...creative cakes." The latter was definitely what she enjoyed more. "I mean it's hardly keeping the public safe, but people do have to eat."

"I may keep the public safe, but I rather expect you're better at keeping them happy. I'm certain most people would rather see a baker with a plate of freshly-made scones than an Auror. Unless of course there's an emergency, in which case I find some people still prefer to have baked goods about."

When she listed other things she made, Adrian decided he might have to look for this bakery, if only because he did enjoy more savory treats. Ham and cheese scones and meatpies for instance never went amiss with him. "Perhaps I should come by sometime. Assuming I learn which one it is." There were a few bakeries in Diagon; he wasn't sure which she worked at.

"Baked goods in times of distress," she mused for a moment. There was evidence in that, stress did seem to make people fall back on their comfort foods. Stress just made Lavender bake, enjoying the process and aroma rather than the actual finished product. "If only a well made cake batter also made all of the bad things just go away."

She smiled, pleased that he at least appeared to be showing some sort of interest in who she was beyond the mask. Even if it never amounted to anything or wasn't anything to begin with, it was nice to feel like she was wanted and not just some deformed social reject.

"I have to say, you are good, although I suppose that comes with the territory." Although in all fairness, she did know he was an auror now, that certainly narrowed it down a little on his end without giving away the game all together. "Still, I think you're going to have to work just a little bit harder to find out the where."

Adrian found he wished he frequently the bakeries more frequently, which would give him some sort of leg up on which one had a young female blonde baker - assuming she was always blonde and that wasn't just for the night. That would help him narrow it down a bit at least.

He'd given her the tidbit that he was an Auror, specifically, but it seemed she wanted him to work a bit more for more clues from her. Again, Adrian briefly wished he wasn't on duty; this would have been more entertaining. His attention was briefly drawn again for another quick visual circuit around the room before he came back to her. "Oh? Right then, how long have you been working where you are?"

She couldn't help but laugh at the question. Not that it was funny, but rather the line of thought he followed making it very clear he worked in law enforcement. "Not with twenty questions. Impress me with your charm, intellect, or your biceps which I remembering liking earlier. Or at least be a bit more subtle about it." For as insecure as she could be inside her own head, Lavender could be just as bold when she knew what she wanted. And it did help to have a mask to hide behind.

"And then you just might be a bit more interesting version of an answer." So maybe it was the mask, but maybe it was also the wine, but right now she was contemplating sending some fairy cakes to the auror office. Let him figure it out that way, but there were still other options. "But to be fair, I've been working there about five years now."

Charm? Adrian wasn't exactly sure how to use his charm, supposing he had any. He knew how to be polite, but that was as far as that went, consciously. As for his biceps - all right he wasn't expecting her to say that. He was fit, certainly but he preferred not to emphasise his looks over his mind. Intellect he could certainly use. He was proud enough of his and it was already telling him something.

"Intellect it is then. You're bold, and you've been working there five years. Seeing your face would make judging your age easier, but I'd guess you were only a few years younger than myself, at the most, putting you in your early twenties. You're quick and witty, and I'd guess from your boldness that you were in Gryffindor house at school." He darted his eyes around the room again and then sipped his cider, coming back to her again. "How am I doing so far?"

"I would say that those are all logical conclusions." So he might have been trying to figure her out, but that didn't mean she wasn't doing the same. Not that Ravenclaws were the only house with rights on intellect, but it was a possibility she had to consider. Also the fact that he might actually be a few years older than her if what he was saying was true, which she would assume it was.

"And also add that if that is your real accent we're originally from opposite ends of the UK." Her own accent was mild, far from the typically South East accent. But Scots were all right by her, accents and all.

"Intellect and logic work hand in hand, don't they," he responded, finishing his cider and setting down the empty glass. He listened to her speak some more and smiled in spite of himself. "It is my real accent and you're right. I'd assume you're English, likely from the East Sussex area." But none of that was telling him who she was.

"I also have to consider the possibility then we might not know each other at all, which would make guessing your identity that much more difficult." Adrian gave her a long and considering look, but he couldn't place her. Shame he didn't know which bakery she worked at either.

"Right along the ocean," she said with a smile that hinted at many fond moments of her youth. "Although I've been living in London for a few years now." It was far more convenient that way. Otherwise she would be apparating and flooing at unheard of hours in the morning. Now, she just had to stumble out of her flat, which she could do partially asleep.

"That is a possibility too." The wizarding world may not be that large, but it wasn't exactly small either so that everyone knew everyone. Even if the case of Lavender Brown had been something of mild interest following the final battle because being mauled by Greyback and surviving against all odds was something people could talk about for a day or two. "I mean outside of being involved in what some might call trouble at school, I haven't really needed an auror in any sort of official capacity." She was after all a Gryffindor.

Adrian nodded. "In the area of Eastbourne, perhaps." Unfortunately, that didn't make things any easier. If she was in fact a Gryffindor, and not in his year, and not from his area, there wasn't much chance he'd know her beyond passing. "Don't think this an attempt at surrender, but I would like to state now that if I didn't know you before tonight, my chances at guessing at the person behind the mask are slim. So as I've noted, you're a Gryffindor, I'm nearly certain, and likely not the same year as myself. You're from East Sussex, likely Eastbourne, which puts us at a disadvantage for having met often in our youth."

He titled his head, "You speak with a confidence that's either always there or buoyed by the fact you're anonymous behind that mask. If it's the former that means you're probably an attractive young woman, thought you've no gentleman on your arm. And again, that makes me think it a shame I can't ask you to dance."

A loud noise attracted his attention and he moved, his hand going toward his wand. It was someone in extremely fanciful robes, wearing a mask so elaborate Adrian could not tell whether it was a witch or wizard beneath it. What was clear was the fact that he or she had had far too much to drink. Adrian turned back to his companion. "I'm sorry but I'll have to take care of this. Perhaps we'll be able to discern each others identified another time."
