Ministry Gala Event!
Characters: OPEN TO ALL. Please tag with your own character(s) when you comment/they arrive.
Setting: The Ministry Atrium, Level 8, beginning at 7 PM and running until midnight
Summary: It's the Halloween ministry gala/party! Come in costume (muggle or otherwise), in elegant wear, or in dress robes. The event begins at 7PM with refreshments, appetizers, finger foods and cocktails. Desserts are served later in the evening, but the cocktails remain available all night long. There is no full dinner, as it would be quite unwieldy with the amount of people expected to attend. The dance floor is open, a live band is playing, and the atmosphere is almost aggressively pleasant. For safety reasons, wands are being checked (surrendered) at the entrances. Unless your character is on-duty at the party, he or she will not have her wand on his/her person after entering.
Rating: Let's go with R for now, as there will be some dark occurrences later in the evening. We will update as necessary.

The event coordinators at the Ministry of Magic were in fine form in the hours leading up to the start of the gala. Everything had to be perfect, and not just in appearances. The atrium had been decorated in gold and silver, slightly reflective, to capture light and brighten the large, spacious room. The band was in place by 6:30, playing quiet music that set the mood. Off to either side, slightly out of the way, were two cocktail tables, fully stocked. There was also a number of wait staff who would be walking around with trays of red or white wine as well as champagne.

The attention to the decor was due to the head events coordinator, one Ismay Plimpton, who was an absolute perfectionist. With attention down to the very last detail, she was very nearly driving the Minister mad with her questions and comments, not to mention crucial changes. Her voice and general looks had Kingsley Shacklebolt nearly thinking her related to Delores Umbridge, if Ismay weren't so remarkably pleasant and likable.

With his assurance that everything was just fine, Ismay hurried off, gently but firmly reprimanding some poor chap setting candles afloat too low for her liking. The ceiling above twinkled like night stars, and between that, the candles, and the reflective decorations, the room was perfectly lit.

Everything was ready. All they needed now were the guests.

"Yeah it is one of those evenings," Theodore said with a shrug, noticing the fellow smirking at his own jokes, which in a way reminds him of a few of his dorm-mates back at Hogwarts. It certainly didn't sound like Draco. Theodore had wondered what had happened of his former classmate though.

"It wouldn't be surprising. Just since there are too many overly-curious people out there. But they do have the right to be curious though. It is said to be one of the noble characteristics, and it is a rather interesting case that seems to be taking place around here. Or from what my very limited knowledge on the matter tells me, at least."

"And yet here they are," he motioned to the rather crowded dance floor in front of him, "just dancing away their troubles without a care in the world." He might have sounded bitter or even jealous, but mostly he was just annoyed and the general population's ability to deny or compartmentalize things. Just a few hours ago people were still a flutter about those nightmares and now that seemed like a think of the past.

"It would serve them right for the whole thing to blow up in their faces right now." He muttered those words into his glass, following them with another sip. Zacharias shook his head, he wasn't doing him any good to just stand here commenting to Theodore Nott, but sometimes an audience was an audience.

"Maybe it would help to live like that," Theodore commented airily as a seemingly carefree couple floated by on the dance floor. He wasn't sure whether that was something he was longing for or whether he feared it in his own way. Perhaps this was why he did occasionally find himself in spots that one would normally not think he'd go to. (i.e. the Honeypot, amongst other places.)

"We're not a little bit bitter, are we?" Theodore said, with a playful grin that normally lit his face when he noticed a bit of annoyance he could toy with. He knew that it wasn't something that he should indulge in, but he was tired that evening, and dragged out to a gala that he didn't altogether feel like going to. But probably not as angry as this bloke seemed to be.

Zacharias rolled his eyes at the thought. That sounded absolutely horrible, living up in some sort of magical world were nothing hurt and no one died. That wasn't even life. No, life was messy and it hurt like a bitch, but that made all the moments when it was good all the better.

"More like a realist. I haven't ever once seen denial lead to something good." If anything it just made matters worse and more complicated. "Although please feel to try to convince me otherwise." Not that it would work, but the attempts were always amusing.

Theodore noticed the man's reaction and grinned. "You don't want to live in a world of bunnies, puppies and kittens; of gumdrops and lollipops, and everything being wonderful and dandy?" He was playfully inquisitive at this point since he knew that this would make for a bit of interesting in his day.

"Me neither. At the very least, one can be truthful to oneself." He was barely wholly truthful to anyone else, instead opting to share bits and pieces of the truth. Often not anything more than necessary, if even that. "But perhaps the most basic argument one can make or living a lie would be that it'd make one happy. Wouldn't life be that much happier if one was blind and ignorant of all that makes it what it is?"

Believe it or not, Zacharias had given a significant amount of consideration to that very question. Was ignorance bliss? He could imagine moments when it just might be. "Maybe for a while, but the thing with lies is that they always seem to catch up to you and I'd much rather be ready for them than surprised."

Being aware of the reality of a situation made it more manageable. Not knowing or choosing to ignore, meant you forfeited any power you might have over it. "So, I'm content in knowing that puppies become dogs and die and sweets will eventually rot your teeth because maybe then I'll enjoy it knowing full well it won't last and not be upset when it's over."

That was more of a profound statement than he was normally capable of, but sometimes Zacharias Smith could surprise even himself. He only wish that he had that sort of sense when he was younger. Not that it would help him, he suspected he would always end up in some variation of this situation.

"Or would it be that you would choose to enjoy it more fully, while it is actually enjoyable?" Theodore added as a suggestion. He at least found these sorts of conversations tolerable, but certainly quite a rarity as people would much prefer talking about the Weird Sisters or quidditch (he did enjoy the latter, but talking about quidditch eventually does get boring).

"I can imagine that people grow tired of sunshine without the rain at least once in awhile. Too much of a good thing is just too much. And that difficulty helps one appreciate what may be good." Well that has certainly been the case for Theodore, at the very least. And despite it all he has been able to find at least a measure of peace; sanity among the chaos

"Only get the rainbows after the rain or what have you." Zacharias shrugged, looking out at the crowd for something else. The conversation was fine, but he wasn't sure he really wanted to keep talking. Not when there were other things he might be doing. Through the crowd of badly dancing people, he spotted a group of girls dancing just as badly, but that wasn't really what he was looking at anyway. Zacharias Smith didn't need a dance partner exactly.

He threw back the rest of his drink, placing the empty glass on a nearby table. "And if you'll excuse me I think I'm going to have to go see about those puppies before the become dogs." It wasn't smooth, but he didn't feel any real need to be. If the night wasn't going to get better, he was going to turn it around himself. And the blonde with the less than modest dress? Quite vital to this plan.

"Always a pleasure, Theodore." Zacharias inclined his head toward the other man before starting off toward the girl in question.

Theodore watched Zacharias' actions carefully and was able to ascertain some sort of intent on Smith's behalf.

"Likewise, Smith," Theodore said, finally able to place his finger on who exactly it was. He had a rather good memory for people, after all, and may have more easily realized who it was without the mask earlier on. "Enjoy the rest of this evening."
